Student Finance England – Travel Grant 2016/17
The Travel Grant is available to full-time students who are receiving student finance that depends on their household income (means-tested), and who are:
· studying at an overseas university or college (including students on the Erasmus scheme) for at least 50% of any academic term;
· on an Erasmus work placement abroad;
· an Erasmus British Council Language Assistant (BCLA).
The Travel Grant is not available to students on a work placement abroad unless the student is on the Erasmus scheme, and therefore receiving means-tested funding.
SFE will automatically check students’ eligibility for the Travel Grant when they assess their loan application. If eligible, SFE should send the student 2 forms:
Course Abroad Form
This is used to confirm the details of the student’s time abroad for the purposes of claiming expenses. The student completes page 1 of the form with details of their placement. The Form must then be sent the University of Leeds to be signed and stamped for authorisation. The University then sends the Form to SFE.
The Course Abroad Form is only available from SFE. The form will be pre-printed with the student’s personal details and SFE account details, so forms are individual to each student.
NB: the Form is only used by SFE to verify expenses claims. If is not used for calculating the student loan. This is determined by the information provided on the student’s funding application.
Travel Grant Claim Form
The student completes this form and sends it to SFE along with all receipts for all expenses incurred. It is advisable to keep copies of all receipts and paperwork.
The Travel Grant Claim Form can also be downloaded from the Gov. uk website:
https://www. gov. uk/student-finance-forms/y/uk-full-time/travel-grant
If you do not receive these forms automatically from SFE, please check that you are eligible and that you have applied for means-tested funding. If you are sure that you are eligible, you will need to contact the SFE Helpline to request the forms. The SFE Student Helpline number is: 0300 100 0607
How much can students get?
The amount of Travel Grant students get depends on their household income, and covers reasonable travel expenses during an academic year. This means that students must buy the most cost-effective tickets using the most economical and practical form of transport (e. g. taking the train instead of flying, buying standard class not first-class tickets, and not incorporating other ‘stop-over’ destinations).
The first £303 of travel costs are disregarded, which means this is deducted from the amount of Travel Grant they apply for.
If the student’s household income exceeds the threshold for the Travel Grant of £39,796, there will be a further £1 disregard for each additional £9.27 of household income which will reduce the Travel Grant further.
What can be claimed for?
• up to 3 return journeys between the UK and the overseas institution during a full academic year abroad (N. B. students at universities with 2 semesters may only be eligible for 2 flights and will need to check with SFE);
• the cost of child/children’s fares between the UK and the overseas institution if it is necessary for a lone-parent student to take them abroad;
• Mandatory Medical Insurance, Visas, and Medical Expenses for the purpose of studying abroad.
Students can submit claims throughout the year, as they incur expenses, and do not have to wait until the end of their time abroad.
All reimbursements are at the discretion of SFE. The University can provide general information based on SFE guidelines, but cannot confirm if SFE will accept particular expense claims or not. Students are advised to check any arrangements with SFE if they are unsure.
