Литературный раунд:
Do you know British literature? If you do, tell us where these extracts are from.
1. (“Romeo and Juliet” by W. Shakespeare)
‘Tis but thy name that is my enemy.
Thou art thyself, though not a Montague.
What’s Montague? It is nor hand, nor foot,
Nor arm, nor face, nor any other part
Belonging to a man. O, be some other name!
What’s in a name? That which we call a rose
By any other name would smell as sweet.
So Romea would, were he not Romeo call’d,
Retain that dear perfection whih he owes
Without that title. Romeo, doff thy name:
And for that name, which is not part of thee,
Take all myself.
2. (“Six Honest men” by R. Kipling)
I keep six honest serving-men
(They taught me all I knew);
Their names are What and Why and When
And How and Where and Who.
I send them over land and sea,
I send them east and west;
But after they have worked for me,
I give them all a rest.
I let them rest from nine till five,
For I am busy then,
As well for breakfast, lunch and tea,
For they are hungry men.
3. (“Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland” by Lewis Carrol)
The Queen said to Alice, “Have you seen the Mock Turtle yet?”
“No,” said Alice, “I don’t even know what a Mock Turtle is.”
“Come on, then,” said the Queen, “and he shall tell you his history.”
They very soon came upon the Gryphon. He was asleep in the sun.
“Up, lazy thing!” said the Queen, “and take this young lady to see the Mock Turtle. She wants to hear his history. I must go back.”
The Gryphon sat up and rubbed his eyes; then it watched the Queen till she disappeared; then it said, “Come on!” Soon they saw the Mock Turtle. He was sitting on the sand sad and lonely.
They went up to the Mock Turtle. Hу looked at them with large eyes full of tears, but said nothing.
4. (“Harry Potter” by Joan Rowling)
Easily the most boring lesson was the History of Magic, which was the only class taught by a ghost. Professor Binns had been very old indeed when he had fallen asleep in front of the staff-room fire and got up next morning to teach, leaving his body behind him. …
Professor Flitwick, the Charms teacher, was a tiny little wizard who had to stand on a pile of books to see over his desk. At the start of their first lesson he took the register, and when he reached Harry’s name he gave an exited squeak and toppled out of sight.
Professor McGonagall was again different. Harry had been quite right to think she wasn’t a teacher to cross.
5. (“Three Men in a Boat” by Jerome K. Jerome)
I said I’d pack. I rather pride myself on packing. Packing is one of those many things that I feel I know more about than any other person living. (It surprises me myself, sometimes, how many of these subjects there are.) I impressed the fact upon George and Harris and told them that they had better leave the whole matter entirely to me. They fell into the suggestion with a readiness that had something uncanny about it. George put on a pipe and spread himself over the easy-chair, and Harris cocked his legs on a table and lit a cigar. This was hardly what I intended. What I meant, of course, was, that I should boss the job, and that Harris and George should potter about under my directions. … Their taking it in the way they did irritated me. There is nothing that irritates me more than seeing other people sitting about doing nothing when I’m working.
6. (“The Prince and the Pauper” by Mark Twain)
What a sight it was! One of the boys looked so dirty and miserable and the other so well dressed and they stood side by side. “Take hold of that boy!” cried Sir Humphrey, pointing to Edward. “Stop!” cried Lord Hertford. “Look at those two faces. They are so like each other… I don’t know what to think. Perhaps our Prince was not mad: perhaps he is not the real prince.”
“Is there any question that we could ask the boy which would help us?” said Lord Somerset. Lord Hertford turned to Edward and asked him question after question – about King Henry, about Edward’s mother, about the palace… Then Tom remembered about the letter that Edward had brought. Lord Hertford took the paper and read, “Where is the Great Seal?”
