Estimating Causal Treatment Effects in Economics.

An Introduction to Regression Discontinuity Designs

Annotation:

The identification of causal effects of treatment on economic outcomes is a core concern for empirical researchers but requires the use of appropriate empirical methods. Unlike experiments with random assignment, regression discontinuity designs exploit a threshold to estimate such treatment effects.

The lecture gives an introduction to identification, interpretation, and estimation issues, and provides examples of applications. Such applications include the effect of awards on academic outcomes, the effect of class size and financial aid on educational outcome, the effect of incumbency advantage on election outcomes, and the effect of financial transfers on economic growth and employment.

The lecture will also cover recent applications that exploit spatial thresholds. Examples include the effect of speaking a common native language on international trade and the effect of religion on political preferences and economic outcomes. Software tools that facilitate the application of spatial regression discontinuity designs will be discussed.

Lecture context is minimized with technical stuff and mostly focus on intuition and applications
