каждую букву только один раз. В задании одна тема лишняя.

A – Getting married in the USA

B – The changes in the population of the USA

C – A wealthy land of opportunities

D – Bringing up children

E – American women’s life and work

F – American society of the past

G – Problems of the Americans

H – The growth of single-parent families in the USA

1. Nowadays Americans move a lot. But they used to live in small communities. They seldom moved from one place to another. And usually, knew their neighbors well. Life was so personal that people often joked about it. It was difficult to have privacy in a small community like that. Some people dreamed about moving to big cities, but most people were happy to live all their lives in the same place. In the 20th century industrialized America women were always the supporters of the family. Some of them were active outside the home; others were active homemakers. Both men and women faced many difficulties, but perhaps the pioneer spirit, which built the country, help Americans change, improve and adapt to the future.

2. The 1950s was the last decade of calm for this country. The life was predictable at that time. The situation has changed greatly since that time. Americans are getting older and the number of senior citizens increases. There are now more Asian Americans, Hispanics than ever before. More and more people from different countries come to America.

3. America is a wealthy country, but wealth is not evenly distributed. There are homeless people, hungry children, and crime in the country. Some foreigners have the idea that “the streets are paved with gold” in America. Hard work brings great results but unemployment is a problem in many parts of the country. For some Americans, the United States is not a land of opportunities. Americans worry about the same things as other people around the world. They worry about terrorism, about their children and how their lives will be.

4. The American family changed too. It’s difficult to generalize about American women. They may be single, divorced or married. They may be homemakers, doctors or factory workers. But they have one thing in common – they are always independent. With more time on their hands American women want to become more involved in what is going on outside their houses. They are working to reestablish their strong roles in life.

5. Newly married American couples often postpone having children, while they are establishing their careers. Besides they might think that they are not ready yet to bring children up until their marriage become strong. Marriage in the United States is considered a matter of individual responsibility and decision. Young people frequently fall in love and marry even if their parents disapprove of their choice. Most American men marry by the time they are 25, and the husband is usually two or three years older than his wife.

6. After their marriage the young couple is free to decide where to live and when to start a family. They plan the number of children they are going to have and when their children will be born. The birth rate has been declining steadily in recent years. Americans try their children to be independent from the childhood. It is a part of American culture. Children are taught to take care of themselves, to clean their rooms, to help with the dishes and laundry. Most teenagers try to find summer or after-school jobs, so that they can have their own money. Students usually work part-time and during summer vacations to be independent from their parents.

7. Until the 1960s divorce was uncommon. Between 1962 and 1981 the number of divorces increased. Americans are not likely to remain in marriage that has problems. They are not forced by economic, social or religious pressure to stay married. Since 1960s the number of one-parent families increased. The divorce rate has almost doubled in the past fifty years. Many people view these figures with alarm.

VI. Прочтите текст и выполните задания 1 – 7. Ответьте на вопрос,

выбрав одну букву, соответствующую правильному ответу.

1. There are still some rich people in the world. Many of them lead lives of particular pleasure. But rich people do have their problems. They are seldom problems of finance, since most rich people have enough sense to hire other people to take care of their worries. But there are other, genuine problems. They are the problems of behaviour.

2. Let me tell you a story, which happened to my uncle Octavian a full thirty years ago. At that time I myself was fifteen. My uncle Octavian was then a rich man. He was a charming and accomplished host whose villa was an accepted rendezvous of the great. He was a hospitable and most amiable man – until January 3, 1925.

3. There was nothing special about that day in the life of my uncle Octavian, except that it was his fifty-fifth birthday. As usual on such a day he was giving a party, a party for twelve people. All of them were old friends.

4. I, myself, aged fifteen, was greatly privileged. I was staying with my uncle at his exquisite villa, on holiday from school, and on this special happy day, I was allowed to come down to dinner. It was exciting for me to be admitted to such a company, which included a newspaper proprietor of exceptional intelligence and his charming American wife, a recent prime-minister of France and a distinguished German prince and princess.

5. At that age, you will guess, I was like in a dream. Even today, 30 years later, one may fairly admit that the company was distinguished. But I should also stress that they were all old and close friends of my uncle Octavian.

6. Towards the end of a wonderful dinner, when dessert had been brought in and the servants had left, my uncle leant forward to admire a magnificent diamond ring on the princess’s hand. She was a handsome woman. She turned her hand gracefully towards my uncle. Across the table, the newspaper proprietor leant across and said: “May I also have a look?” She smiled and nodded. Then she took off the ring and held it out to him. “It was my grandmother’s – the old empress,” she said. “I have not worn it for many years. It is said to have once belonged to Genghis Khan.”

7. There were exclamations of delight and admiration. The ring was passed from hand to hand. For a moment it rested on my own palm, gleaming splendidly. Then I passed it to my neighbour. As I turned away again, I saw her pass it on.

8. It was some twenty minutes later when the princess stood up and said: “Before we leave you, may I have my ring back?” … There was a pause, while each of us looked expectantly at his neighbour. Then there was silence.

9. The princess was still smiling, though less easily. She was unused to asking for things twice. The silence continued, I still thought that it could only be a practical joke, and that one of us – probably the prince himself – would produce the ring with a laugh. But when nothing happened at all, I knew that the rest of the night would be dreadful.

10. I am sure that you can guess the sort of scene that followed. There was the embarrassment of the guests – all of them old and valued friends. There was a nervous search of the whole room. But it didn’t bring the princess’s ring back again. It had vanished – an irreplaceable thing, worth possibly two hundred thousand pounds – in a roomful of twelve people, all known to each other.

11. No servants had entered the room. No one had left it for a moment. The thief (for now it could only be theft) was one of us, one of my uncle Octavian’s cherished friends.

12. I remember it was the French cabinet minister who was most insistent on being searched, indeed, in his excitement he had already started to turn out his pockets, before my uncle held up his hand and stopped him. “There will be no search in my house”, he commanded. “You are all my friends. The ring can only be lost. If it is not found” – he bowed towards the princess – “I will naturally make amends myself.” The ring was never found. To our family’s surprise, Uncle Octavian was a comparatively poor man when he died. And he never gave a single party for the last thirty years of his life.
