English Parties.

47) Sam: (sees Johnny coming behind Bill) : Bill, look back.

48) Bill: Help! Help, Sam. I’m afraid of him. Let’s carry him to his father.

(reads the letter)

Dear Gentlemen,

I received your letter asking for my son’s ransom. You ask too much. I want to make you an

offer. You bring Johnny home and give me 1000 dollars.

50) Bill: Sam, what’s 1000 dollars after all? Let’s pay the money and be happy. Home! You little

devil!

51) Johnny: I don’t want to go home! I don’t want to!

7.   Angel 1: When do people celebrate Christmas? Where does the word Christmas come from?

8.   Announcer: Before Christmas groups of singers go from house to house. They collect money and sing traditional Christmas songs or carols. There are a lot of very popular British Christmas carols. Three famous ones are: «Good King Wenceslas», «The Holly and the Ivy» and «The Three Kings».

The holly and the ivy, when they are both full grown,

Of all the trees that are in the wood the holly bears the crown.

The playing of the merry organ, sweet singing in the choir.

The holly bears a blossom as white as a lily flower,

And Mary bore sweet Jesus Christ to be our sweet saviour.

The playing of the merry organ, sweet singing in the choir.

9.   Angel 2: What does ‘carol’ mean? Do you know any carols?

Jim: Darling, I’m home.

19. Della: Please God, make him think I am still pretty. (Jim enters and stares at Della)

Jim, darling, don’t look at me that way. I had my hair cut off and sold it because I

wanted to buy a Christmas present for you. It’ll grow out again. My hair grows very

fast.

20. Jim: You’ve cut off your hair?

21. Della: Cut it off and sold it. Don’t you like me just as well? Say ‘Merry Christmas’ and let’s be happy.

22. Jim: You say your hair is gone?

23. Della: You needn’t look for it. It’s sold. Maybe the hairs of my head were numbered, but nobody could ever count my love for you.

24. Jim: Don’t make any mistake about me, Dell. (He draws a package from his overcoat pocket). Unwrap this package and you’ll understand everything.

25. Della: Oh, what beautiful combs! Pure tortoiseshell, with jewelled rims! I’ve been dreaming to have them all my life! Oh! You haven’t seen my present yet. (She takes the box, opens it and takes out the chain) Look at my present, Jim. Isn’t it beautiful? Give me your watch. I want to see how it looks on it.

26. Jim: Dell, let’s put our Christmas presents away and keep them awhile. They’re too nice to use just at present. I sold the watch to get the money to buy your combs. Merry Christmas, Dell!

27. Della: Merry Christmas, Jim.

28. Jim: I love you, Dell.

29. Della: I love you too, Jim.

14. Announcer: It’s a tradition to give Christmas presents and help poor people on Christmas.

15. Announcer: Christmas won’t be Christmas without fairy-tales and wonders. Let’s watch a fairy tale «The Princess and the four gifts»

THE PRINCESS AND THE FOUR GIFTS

Characters: Story-teller: (1,3,42)

Princess: (4,6,9,11,13,16,18, 20, 24, 26, 30,33,35,37 ,39,41)

Her cousin: (5, 12, 17, 23,32,34,38)

King: ( 2,10, 19,24,25, 27,31, 36,40)

Herald: ( 7,14, 21, 28 )

Prince of Spades: (8 )

Prince of Clubs : (15)

Prince of Hearts: (29)

Prince of Diamonds: (22)

1.   Story-teller: Once upon a time, in a far country, there lived a king whose daughter was the prettiest princess in the world. Her eyes were like waters in a deep lake, her hair was softer than silk and her skin was as white as snow. Since childhood the Princess had been surrounded only by the things of beauty. She walked in silver slippers and slept in an ivory bed. All her toys were made of gold or precious stones. So not only she was pretty, but also very rich. One day the King decided to give his daughter’s hand in marriage to one of the princes of the four kingdoms - Kingdom of Spades, Kingdom of Clubs, Kingdom of Diamond and Kingdom of Hearts.

2.   King: My daughter will marry the prince who brings her the gift she likes the most.

3.   Story-teller: Now the King, the Princess and her cousin are waiting for the princess.

4.   Princess: ( to her cousin) What do you think of it, dear?

5.   Cousin: If you ask me, I think that a gift is not everything. If you really want to choose a good man, watch his manners and how he expresses his feelings.

6.   Princess: Oh, you’re wise.

7.   Herald: The Prince of Spades.

8.   Prince of Spades: ( with a massive alarm clock) Oh, the most beautiful princess! I’ve won many battles, now I’ve come here to fight for you. Let me offer my heart and this alarm clock as a gift of my love. Whenever you’re in danger, press this button here, and I will come to help you.

9.   Princess: Oh, father, I’m afraid of this man. He spoke of battles, dangers and fighting!

10. King: Don’t worry my child, there is no danger. The Prince is a brave man and you’ll be safe with him.

11. Princess: (to her Cousin) But what do you think of his gift?

12. Cousin: It’s funny but you won’t use it, I’m afraid, because it’s made of plastic and metal.

13. Princess: I see, I see.

14. Herald: The Prince of Clubs. ( Enters an absent-minded-looking man with a thick old book)

15. Prince of Clubs: My dearest and beloved lady! I can address you only in poem!

I like you, I like you,

I really like you.

I like you, I like you,

I really do.

If your love for me is true,

Send me quick a bow of blue,

If you ever of me think,

Send me quick a bow of pink.

If you have another fellow,

Let me have a bow of yellow.

16. Princess: What a strange man. But he is so polite, and I like his poem. He must be a great poet.

17. Cousin: Not he! Tatiana Viktorovna is!

18. Princess: Oh!

19. King: Yes, the prince is a well-educated man. He studied in the 2nd gymnasium. With him you’ll know everything.

20. Princess: Do you think, father, that to know everything is necessary for wives?

21. Herald: The Prince of Diamonds. (Enters an elegant man, with a huge golden box in his hand)

22. Prince of Diamond: How do you do ladies and gentlemen. I’ve come here to tell you Sire (to the King) that I agree to marry that charming daughter of yours. Here is the gift ( to the Princess) you asked for. This is a very useful box for keeping your things. Pure gold. Made in my Kingdom. High quality. As for details we’ll discuss financial questions with your father. See you soon.

23. Cousin: That’s fantastic!

24. Princess: No, I mean his manners. He also studied in the 2nd gymnasium. He is too rich.

25. King: Right. The richest in the world. With him you’ll have anything you like.

26. Princess: Do you really think so, father?

27. King: Yes, my dear.

28. Herald: The Prince of Hearts. (Enters a man with a bunch of flowers)

29. Prince of Hearts: Oh, heavenly Lady, the princess of my dreams! (sings)

Down in the valley,

The valley so low,

Hang your head over,

Hear the wind blow.

Hear the wind blow, love,

Hear the wind blow.

Hang your head over,

Hear the wind blow.

Roses love sunshine

Violets love dew

Angels in Heaven

Know I love you.

Here are the flowers of my loving heart.

30. Princess: What lovely flowers! I’ve never seen anything like them here in the palace.

31. King: Of course not, because they grow only in the fields. Poor boy. Once his father was rich and there were gold mines in his lands. Nothing is left there now except flowers.

32. Cousin: But he’s got a heart of gold!

33. Princess: Gold lasts forever, but, alas, his flowers don’t.

34. Cousin: His love does! And his gift shows the depth of his feelings!

35. Princess: Do you think it’s enough?

36. King: Herald, tell the princess to wait for my daughter’s decision.

37. Princess: ( to her cousin) First, I’d like to know your opinion.

38. Cousin: I think the Prince of Hearts is the best choice. He is so gentle and handsome and his manners are noble. With him your life could be very romantic. If I were you.........

39. Princess (interrupting her): Fortunately, you are not. If you want always to sit on a diet, I’ll try to persuade the Prince of Hearts to marry you.

40. King: Oh, dear....

41. Princess: As for me, I’m not so silly to live in poverty, without all the beautiful things I am used to. I’ve chosen this. (She stands up and chosen the golden box from the table). So it is the most useful present and I like it the best.

42. Story-teller: If you think this was a happy end, you make a mistake. The King’s daughter married the Prince of Diamonds but her husband turned out to be a and by he lost all their money, his kingdom was ruined and they ended their days in poverty. The cousin married the Prince of Hearts and went to live with him. And it so happened that soon much gold was found in the mines of his kingdom. The Prince of Hearts built a comfortable palace where they lived happily.

16. Announcer: It’s a tradition to sing Christmas songs. Let’s sing a song «WE WISH YOU A MERRY CHRISTMAS»

We wish you a Merry Christmas

We wish you a Merry Christmas

We wish you a Merry Christmas

And a Happy New Year.

Good tidings to you wherever you are

Good tidings for Christmas and a Happy New Year.

We wish you a Merry Christmas

We wish you a Merry Christmas

We wish you a Merry Christmas

And a Happy New Year.

Good tidings we bring to you of good cheer

Good tidings for Christmas and a Happy New Year

We wish you a Merry Christmas

We wish you a Merry Christmas

We wish you a Merry Christmas

And a Happy New Year

( audience: Yes! We do! Certainly! Super!)

Announcer 1: Well, here she comes. Miss Susan Skylark!!!

4.Miss Susan Skylark: Thank you, ladies and gentlemen. Tonight I’m going to sing one of my

beautiful songs «THERE IS A TAVERN IN THE TOWN»

5.Announcer 1: This is a song about Susan’s true love. She loves one young man but he does not

think of her because he’s enjoying the company of a beautiful girl with dark hair.

6. ( Miss Susan is singing; the girls are dancing)

There is a tavern in the town

1. There is a tavern in the town, in the town,

And there my true love sits him down, sits him down,

And drinks his coffee ‘ sugar free’

And never, never thinks of me.

3.Oh, dig my grave both wide and deep, wide and deep,

Put tombstones at my head and feet, head and feet,

And on my breast carve a turtle dove

To signify I died of love.

5.Adieu, adieu kind friends, adieu, adieu, adieu,

I can no longer stay with you, stay with you,

I’ll hang my harp on a weeping willow tree

And may the world go well with thee.

2. He left me for damsel dark, damsel dark,

Each Friday night they used to spark, used to spark,

And now my love once true to me

Takes that dark damsel on his knee.

4.   Fare thee well for I must leave thee,

Do not let this parting grieve thee,

And remember that the best of friends must part, must part.
