IV. Read the text to decide whether the statements are true or false.
The earliest objects used as money were shells. In some parts of the world a person’s wealth was demonstrated by a number of animals he owned. In East Africa a man was allowed to get married only if he had a certain number of cows. Salt is still in use as money in some parts of Africa today. The most convenient coins were used on Yap island. The heavier the stone coins were the greater was their value. The Chinese were the first to start using paper money.Money is generally accepted right across the world as payment for goods in shops or as wages paid by employers to employees. People use money to buy food, clothes and hundreds of other things that they might want.
In the past many different things were used as money. Shells were one of the first things that were used. People who lived on islands in the Pacific Ocean used these shells for ornaments and if somebody ad more food than they needed they were happy to exchange the extra food for these shells. The Chinese used cloth and knives. In the Philippines rice was used for money. In Africa elephant tusks or salt were used. In some parts of Africa some people are still paid in salt today.
In some parts of the world a wealthy man was a man who owned a lot of animals. In East Africa a man showed how rich he was by the number of cows he owned. Sometimes wives were bought with cows. Using animals as money was difficult however because it was not easy to give change. If your animals died it also meant that you had lost all your wealth.
Exchanging good or animals was difficult. Perhaps it was a Chinese businessman who, tired of carrying lots of knives, invented coins to pay a large bill in the shops. The coins first used by the Chinese were round pieces of metal with a hole in the centre so that a piece of string could keep them *****ssia made copper coins, Nepal had leather coins and the people on Yap island had stone coins. These stone coins were huge but they were used even though they were so heavy. They were two metres in diameter.
The most valuable coins were made of gold and silver and the heavier the coin the greater the value. It was still a problem though if you wanted to buy something expensive as you had to carry many coins with you. The Chinese again came up with an answer. They began to use paper money for coins which were promises to pay certain amounts of money. Now paper notes are used throughout the world.
