1.Teacher.
On May 9, 2010, people in our country are celebrating the 65th anniversary of the Great Victory. May 9, Victory Day, is one of the most important holidays in our country. It is also a great holiday for all the countries which fought in the Second World War against fascism.
People in our country won the Great Patriotic War against a powerful enemy, Nazi Germany, because they were fighting a just war to liberate their own country.
We should never forget those who gave their lives for our Motherland. I want to read you some words of H. Truman, President of the USA. May 8, 1945 :
“ We fully appreciate the magnificent contribution made by the mighty Soviet Union to the cause of civilization and liberty”.
2 . P1 Let’s remember the beginning of the war. We’d like to tell you about the Brest Hero Fortress and show you our presentation.
Of the memorable places associated with the Great Patriotic War, the Brest Hero Fortress is widely known. In the stern year of 1941, already in the first hours of the fascist treacherous invasion of our country the invader felt the force of the great invincible spirit of the people, their unbending will and socialist patriotism. A small garrison besieged in the fortress, locked in mortal combat with the
enemy. The fight lasted many long days and nights. Soldiers, officers and political instructors, representatives of thirty nationalities of the Soviet Union, showed mass heroism in defending to the last every inch of their native land. Very few survived to celebrate the victory.
Р2 Years go by, events fade from our mind, and the feat of the defenders of the Brest fortress will always be a brilliant example of utter devotion to our Motherland.
The Motherland valued highly the feats of valor of the defenders.
On May 8, 1965, the Brest fortress was awarded the honorary title of Hero Fortress.
A majestic memorial complex is now here, an ensemble of old buildings, now ruins these mute witnesses of the feat performed by the heroic defenders, and newly-erected sculptures and architectural structures.
Р3 On September 25, 1971, the Brest Hero Fortress Memorial was
inaugurated. Everything is reminiscent of the battles fought here. In the main
entrance to the fortress is a large five-pointed star, where, under its vaults, you hear «The Holy War», the song which is so familiar to you, so sorrowful an experience to your heart. An impressive panoramic view of the Citadel with its principal monument and the Bayonet Obelisk rises before you, and close to them are the ruins of the fortress buildings. On the bank of the Mukhovets, on the left of the bridge to the central island, stands the sculptural composition «The Thirst». And behind the Square of Ceremonies, under granite slabs, are buried the remains of the fallen heroes.
P4 An important part of the Memorial Complex is the Museum which has many valuable relics evidencing the immortal feat of the Soviet people.
People come here to pay tribute to the memory of the fallen heroes, to imbibe the courage of the defenders of the fortress. Hundreds of thousands of people visit this sacred land.

3. P5 We can remember some important battles. One of them is THE BATTLE OF MOSCOW.
( Рассказ учащихся сопровождается показом слайдов с диска
“ Moscow in the years of the Great Patriotic war ”)
The enemy wanted to capture our capital at all costs in autumn 1941.Thanks to the bravery of the army at the front, the partisans and the heroic labour of the entire country the nazis were stopped on the outskirts of Moscow. In early December, 1941, General Zhukov’s troops attacked the nazis and beat them back. Many towns and villages were freed. The nasiz lost dozens of thousands of men and large numbers of tanks and guns. This was the first major defeat Hitler had suffered since the Second World War began, and the first major victory for Red Army in the war.
The victory at Moscow inspired millions of people with new courage and the struggle against the fascists gained new forces.
P6 I want to tell you about the exploit of 28 heroes.
November 1941. The Nazis were tearing towards Moscow. The enemy mounted a major tank assault against the division commanded by General Panfilov. The Dubosekovo Halt 118 kilometres from Moscow. Here in the open field on a hill the heroes from Panfilov’s division blocked the nazis’ path. In all they were 28. They were headed be a political instructor named Klochkov.
P7 Have you ever heard the words of this instructor? He said:” Russia is immense, but there is nowhere to retreat. Moscow is at the backs”. Klochkov himself was wounded. Still he rose up to face a tank, threw a grenade and blew the tank up. The joy of victory swept across his face, but at that moment a bullet cut him down. Political instructor Klochkov fell.
P8 General Panfilov’s heroes struggled fiercely. There were no limits to their courage. They didn’t budge before the *****ssia owes them a debt of gratitude for this.
The Dubosekovo Halt is a sacred spot in the heart of every Russian.
P9 I want to tell you about Leningrad and Leningraders. The Nazis broke through to Leningrad in September 1941. They attempted to take the city by storm but met with unusually stubborn resistance. Then they formed a deep ring around the city. The terrible siege began.
Air-raid sirens souded over and over agsin. Bombs and shells exploded in the streets. Houses went up in flames. Leningraders worked hard to save the many palaces, monuments and other handsome buildings in the city from destruction. For 900 days the Nazis bombed and shelled Leningrad. The city was cut off from the rest of the country. There was no water, no electricity, and no transport. But though thousand died of hunger, Leningrad did not give in.
P10 The only link that Leningrad had with the rest of the country was the “Road of Life”, as it was called, that lay across the ice of Lake Ladoga. Through the Nazis bombed and shelled this life-line every day, hundreds of trucks brought food and munitions into the besieged city and took back the sick and the starving, especially children.
The entire country came to the help of Leningrad. The heroic Leningraders stood firm. At last, in Lanuary 1944, the Soviet troops switched to the offensive and broke through the siege.
P 11 Stalingrad, which was renamed Voldograd in 1961, is a famous Hero City. People fought to the last breath and turned every street and house into a fortress for three months. The army defending the central and factory sections of the town was commanded by Lieutenant-General Vassily Ivanovich Chuikov. Chuikov was a courageous, decisive general. He was charged with the defence of the city on the Volga, but he considered, however, that the best kind of defence is to attack. So he attacked the enemy day and night and never gave him a moment’s peace.
Chuikov was an aggressive general, always on the offensive. He participated in many of the battles during the Great Patriotic War. In 1945 troops under his command were among the first to enter Berlin.
P12, Р13
My Father by O. Maisseynko
Officer: Officer:
Who is your father, My laddie, be worthy My little lad? To bear his name! Boy: Boy: My father’s a hero I’ll try to he worthy Of Stalingrad. To bear his name! He fought for our country My father served Russia, With fearless heart And I’ll do the faithful, Was brave in the battle Like him I’ll be faithful, While doing his part. On duty I’ll stand And safeguard my people, My Native Land!
P14 The Stalingrad battle was the turning point in the course of WorldWar 11. From this point on a major offensive was launched by the Soviet armies on all fronts. There was the famous battle for Kursk, the struggle to win back the Dnieper and the city of Kiev. The breaking of the nazi blockade of LENINGRAD, the liberation of SEBASTOPOL and ODESSA and the hude operation called “Bagration”, which completed the rout of the Nazis and their expulsion from Byelorussia.
P15 In the spring of 1945 the Soviet armies approached Berlin. On the 16 of April the last major struggle of World War 11 began – the battle for Berlin. A few days passed before the nazi generals conceded total defeat. Hitlerite Germany had been smashed. The great war of liberation fought by the Soviet people against Nazism ended with total victory.
P16
Wounds By M. Lukonin. Translated by D. Rottenberg
War marked us, soldiers,
so we shouldn’t stray.
Those war-time scars---
we still feel them today.
But peace-time comes again
and we know nothing was in vain.

VICTORY DAY
Words by V. Kharitonov, music by D. Tukhmanov Victory Day, Victory Day, Victory Day! There were moments when it seemed so far away! There were miles, dusty miles ahead, we knew, But we struggled on to make our dream come true.
Oh, that Victory Day! Smell of gunsmoke in the air, Festive day With the silver in its hair, Joy and laughter, But not without a tear... Victory Day! Victory Day! Victory Day!
At the foundries where the furnaces blazed bright, Our country never slept by day or night. Endless battles - we were never really through, But we struggled on to make our dream come true.
Oh, that Victory Day! Smell of gunsmoke in the air, Festive day With the silver in its hair, Joy and laughter, But not without a tear... Victory Day! Victory Day! Victory Day! Hello, Mother, some of us won't be returning... We'll run barefoot through the dew as day is dawning! Half of Europe, half the world we've crossed for you, As we struggled on to make our dream come true.
