Употребление As и Like

Часто при переводе с русского языка на английский встает вопрос: «Какое как выбрать?». В английском языке есть два похожих по значению эквивалента этому русскому слову (если речь идет о предлоге или союзе) – это like и as. Разберем, в каком случае какое слово употреблять правильно.

As употребляется:

- для того чтобы сказать кто кем или чем является (роль или профессия), можно заменить русским «в качестве»

She works as a teacher. (She’s a teacher.)

He appeared in the play as Hamlet.

- в устойчивых выражениях: as usual, as much, the same as, such as, as…as

He came late as usual.

Some starts, such as motor-racing, can be dangerous.
- после be known, describe, regard, accept, class, refer to, use

He is regarded as the best jazz singer of all time.

They regarded it as an accident.

- в предложениях образа действия в значении «таким путем, что»

Do it as I showed you.

Stop arguing and just do as you’ve been told.

Like употребляется:

- в значении подобно, похоже на

He swims like a duck and climbs like a monkey.

This tastes like a coffee.

This dress fits you like a glove.

- после слов look, feel, sound, smell

It sounds like a true story, doesn’t it?

He looks like Charles.

! Like является предлогом, поэтому за ним может идти существительное, местоимение или герундий (не инфинитив). As может быть не только предлогом, но и союзом, поэтому за ним часто следует подлежащее с глаголом-сказуемым.
