Местоимения other, another, the other, the others в английском языке

Местоимение other имеет значение «другой, другие» и употребляется как в качестве местоимения-прилагательного (при существительном), так и местоимения-существительного (полностью заменяя ранее упомянутое или подразумеваемое существительное). Неопределенный артикль an пишется слитно с other, образуя местоимение another.

Местоимение other в роли существительного принимает форму множественного числа с окончанием –s:  others, а также может принимать форму притяжательного падежа: ед. число – other’s и мн. число – others’ (в этой форме оно становится определением к другому существительному).

Местоимение another употребляется с существительными в единственном числе. Оно может выражать два оттенка значения:

- другой, иной (по качеству):

Например:	This chair is broken. Take another one.
Этот стул сломан. Возьми другой.

Например:	I don’t like this hat. Show me another.
Мне не нравится эта шляпа. Покажите мне другую.

 

- другой, еще один (по количеству):

Например:	Can I have another apple?
Можно мне еще одно яблоко?

Например:	She asked me question, then another.
Она задала мне вопрос, потом еще один.

Местоимение  the other употребляется:

- с существительными в единственном числе в значении «другой, второй», если речь идет о двух лицах, предметах или объект состоит из двух частей:

Например:	He is waiting for us on the other side of the street.
Он ждет нас на другой стороне улицы.

Например:	Here is only one shoe. Where is the other?
Здесь только один ботинок. Где другой?

- с существительными во множественном числе в значении «другие, остальные», если из контекста или ситуации понятно о каких конкретно людях или предметах идет речь:

Например:	Where are the other cassettes that I gave you?
Где другие (остальные) кассеты, которые я тебе дал?

Местоимения other, others, the others употребляются с существительными во множественном числе. При этом местоимения other и others употребляются с существительными, выражающими неопределенное количество лиц или предметов:

Например:	She has other interests.
У нее другие интересы.

Например:	Some people like rock music, others don’t.
Некоторые люди любят рок музыку, другие – нет.

Например:	There are only three books in the bag. Where are the others?
В сумке только три книги. Где другие?
