Happy Holidays to the Cherokee Family

Mike Rinaldi walks away in disbelief claiming he was setup, “how can I take down Jolly Old Saint Nick”?

Heavyweight Santa Claus stopped by the wrestling room to register his first victory of the new season.

Donald Tran is the only senior captain on this year’s varsity wrestling team and has taken an unusual path to the position. As a football player since age 8, Donald’s passion for wrestling was not discovered until he began freshman year. In the locker room before a normal day of practice, Coach Roller approached him, looking for freshman recruits in his first year as head coach. Donald filled out a card, possibly weighing the idea of using wrestling to stay in shape for football.

Captain’s Corner:

НЕ нашли? Не то? Что вы ищете?

Over his four years of wrestling, two of them were spent mostly on JV learning the sport from the ground up. His first varsity action came during his sophomore year following the injury of then senior Captain Voris Tejada. Donald now has two varsity letters in wrestling and two in football. Don believes that hard work and the willingness to learn are his ingredients to success. Wrestling is the toughest sport there is, and for this year’s team to have success, it will take more work than in the past.

Wrestlers help the Christmas Toy campaign

Our wrestlers participated in a local community service project during the holidays. In conjunction with the Marlton Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) along with the Cherokee National Honor Society, our kids spent hours shopping and collecting gifts for the under privileged children in our community.

Congratulations to everyone that participated in making the holiday season a little more enjoyable for those in need.

Welcome Class of 2011 Wrestlers

Welcome to all of the Freshman wrestlers to the wrestling season. Thank you for joining and becoming involved in the Cherokee Wrestling Program.

The freshman class has over 20 wrestlers. Several of these individuals are experienced wrestlers and have helped to fill vacancies on the varsity squad.

Each of you is part of unique program that makes a successful team. Work hard, learn new techniques, make new friends and have fun in the process.

New Assistant Coach

This is Bob Colombo’s first year of coaching at Cherokee High School. Bob has coached at Mainland High School and Pond Road Middle School.

Bob graduated from Shawnee High School in 2001 where he was a 4 year varsity wrestler. He was the team captain for 2 years and was a 3 time district place winner as well as placing in the Regions. He was also picked as an All-County/All-Conference selection.

Coach Colombo graduated from The College of New Jersey in 2006. He wrestled 2 years for TCNJ and 1 year at North Carolina State University (member of the 2001 ACC Championship team).

Bob is currently a Health and Physical Education teacher at Atlantic County Institute of Technology. Please welcome Bob to the Cherokee Family.

Help Wanted

The Cherokee Wrestling program is in need of parental help. Wrestling experience is not necessary in order to participate.

We are looking for adults to help with fundraising, selling 50/50 tickets, concessions, JV tournament, district programs, fashion show, banquet and our golf tournament.

If you would like to help, please speak with any of the booster club officers for more information.

Web Site

Lisa Turner has volunteered to be our new “Webmaster”. I am pleased that Lisa will provide updates and effectively take our website to the next level.

Lisa’s first accomplishment was to create “Mapquest” links with directions for all away matches on the schedule page. Just click on the school name and you can print out detailed directions from Cherokee High to an opponent.

Construction is ongoing so check the site often for updates. The URL address is: www. cherokeewrestling. org
