В о л ш е б н и ц а. Not quite and not yet! I’m a fairy, but it’s not in my power to change the past and the present.

Г н о м ы . But it’s a Christmas night!

В о л ш е б н и ц а. I need a person whose heart is full of love and sympathy to people.

Г н о м ы :

– Oh, there is such a person! Look! Do you see that girl? She is kind!

– Oh, yes, she is very sweet!

– Yes, she will help us, I’m sure.

В о л ш е б н и ц а. All right, then let’s wake her up.

В о л ш е б н и ц а. I’m a fairy of love and romance. Long time ago there was a land, we used to call it a Magic land. Merry and friendly people lived there. They liked to joke and make fun. They were characters of romantic and jolly songs.

Д е в о ч к а .Why were they from songs, not from fairy tales?

В о л ш е б н и ц а. Everybody knows that people sing when they are happy.

Д е в о ч к а. Right you are! It was a wonderful land. If I could only have a look at it! Such a pity, it’s impossible!

В о л ш е б н и ц а . During the Christmas night there’s nothing impossible. And I’m a fairy, remember? I have a magic Christmas clock. Look! We have 5 minutes to travel to the past. You’ll see everything with your own eyes. Hurry up!

Поднимается занавес, вспыхивает яркий свет. На сцене появляются красиво и ярко одетые люди.

And Molly says this as she takes him by the hand.

Desmond takes a trolley to the jewelry store.

Buys a twenty carat golden ring.

Takes it back to Molly waiting at the door.

And as he gives it to her she begins to sing.

In a couple of years they have built a home, sweet home, With a couple of kids running in the yard, Of Desmond and Molly Jones. Happy ever after in the market place Desmond lets the children lend a hand. Molly stays at home and does her pretty face. And in the evening she still sings it with the band. Д е в о ч к а. What a beautiful country it was! What happened with it and with its people?

В о л ш е б н и ц а. There appeared a strange and terrible disease. It was the disease of indifference and anger, and all the people became unkind and careless about the feelings of others. This illness caught people one by one unless the whole country was silent and passive. Even birds stopped singing. Now you can’t hear music or laughter anywhere.

Д е в о ч к а . No, it can’t be so! I don’t believe it!

В о л ш е б н и ц а. Have a look then!

Занавес приоткрывается, на сцене – беспорядок.

Д е в о ч к а. It’s awful!

В о л ш е б н и ц а. Oh, it is. And it can be even worse!

Д е в о ч к а . I wish I could do something to save the people and to bring music back! But I’m afraid it’s impossible.

В о л ш е б н и ц а . Everything is possible for a willing heart. Don’t forget, it’s a Christmas night. Call your friends, ask them to help you, go to the country and wake up the people there.

Д е в о ч к а. Who can help me? Let me think. Who is the main person of Christmas night? Santa Claus, of course! Let’s call him!

Д е в о ч к а . Thank you for coming, Santa Claus! I do hope you’ll help us to wake up these people.

S a n t a C l a u s. We’ll do it together. Let’s invite the Lady whom all children are fond of. She can do magic things. She helps unreal become real, unusual – usual. She can travel all over the world for a minute. Do you know her, friends?

M a r y. I heard somebody call me. Here am I. And I brought Jane and Michael with me.

M a r y. Do you need my help, friends? What shall I do?
