Учитель: | Well, and now Sasha will tell us what he has found out about the history of English language. |
Ученики: | (слушают доклад ученика.) THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE The Romans were the first people to conquer Britain. It was in the fifth century. From the Romans came a lot of place names ending in -chester, - cester, caster, such as Manchester, Dorchester, Doncaster, etc. When the Romans left Britain after almost 400 years, the Celtic people who lives there couldn't protect their country. That's why soon the island was invaded by different tribes from northern Germany and Denmark - the Angles and Saxons. From the Angles and Saxons came: mother, father, field, fish, drink, sleep, etc. The Angles and Saxons settled in the large areas of Britain. These tribes spoke Germanic dialects. And a new language, Anglo-Saxon replaced Celtic as the native language of Britain. During the 9th century Vikings from Denmark and Norway started settling in Britain. The Vikings added: law, skin, sky, knife, take, they, them, their, etc. Normans were the last people to conquer Britain. For 300 years their language, French, was the official language of the country. From the Normans came: government, officer, minister, parliament, religion, crime, etc. In the 14th century English became a kind of "mixture" of Anglo-Saxon and Norman French. Over the centuries the English language continued to develop. As British explorers came back from different countries they introduced shampoo, pajamas from India, tobacco, tea from America, troika, balalaika from Russia, rucksack, kindergarten from Germany. Today, the English language has over 800,000 words - more than any other language in the world. |
Учитель: | Very good. Thank you, Sasha. You may take you place. So, children, we have learned that there are many foreign words in the modern English language. And I offer you to guess the English translation of the following sentences. |
Ученики: | (читают слова и предложения на французском, латинском и немецком языках, переводят их письменно, а затем зачитывают их) |
VI. | |
Учитель: | Well, children, are you ready for a role-play? Who wants to start? |
Ученики: | Today we have discussed our favourite books, revised the words and found out the authors of some books. |
VII. | |
Учитель: | Well, now Masha, tell us what we have done today. |
Ученики: | Today we have discussed about the history of English language, revised the words and played a role-play. |
Учитель: | Thank you. And your home task will be to write an article on the theme: "Why is English so popular?" |
Учитель: | That is all for today. Your marks are… Good-bye! |
