How much nicer the whole thing would be, she thought to herself, if she had someone to chat to. And then it happened. There, in the (22) ……… was a solitary figure by the side of the road. The person's (23) ………… was outstretched and their thumb raised. ‘A hitchhiker,’ said Jenny to herself. She slowed the car down, hoping to get a better look at the person before making the decision whether to stop and pick them up or not. Initially, she could tell little from the person's (24) …….. Was it a man or a woman? How old were they? Did they look trustworthy? Did they look as if they would be good company on a long car ride? All these thoughts raced through Jenny's head, and before she had time to answer them, she found herself automatically applying the brake and (25)…… in by the side of the road.

The hitchhiker ran to the car. It was a woman of about the same age as Jenny. Thank you so much for stopping,’ said the hitchhiker. 'I've been standing here for hours!'

'Where are you (26)...... ?' asked Jenny.

Sam would tell her when she was ready. She seemed to be in no hurry to be (30) …… off, so they probably had a long ride ahead of them. It was going to be an interesting few hours after all.

Задание 1.

Установите соответствие между заголовками A-F и текстами 1-5. Используйте каждую букву только один раз. В задании один заголовок лишний.

A.  Studying from Home

B.  Personal Development is Important

C.  Modern Tools for Studying

D.  Studying and Living at School

E.  Assessing Academic Progress

F.  High-Tech School

1.  In the earliest days of computers, the only computer education was about computers. We, and computers, have come a long way since those days. Now computers have invaded every aspect of modern life. Education is no exception. Students can use word processors for writing, spreadsheets for mathematics and science, and databases for organizing information. Lately, the Internet has become a recognized way of getting information.

2.  There are many advantages of distant learning. For home schoolchildren, it’s a great way to safely get a head start on college before completing a school course. In addition, a lot of students don’t have the ability to leave home for some reasons. Another huge advantage is the cost savings. Through distant learning, students avoid room and board fees.

3.  In Great Britain a lot of children go to boarding schools. A good boarding school can be an excellent placement for orphans, because everyone is treated equally there. Some parents taking unusual jobs or those undergoing difficulties like divorce find boarding schools excellent alternatives. Boarding schools can help children grow in independence, and friendship formed in boarding school often lasts a lifetime.

4.  Considered by many to be a diamond in the rough of the Parkside area, the school boasts a curriculum that encourages technological literacy. The 170 local 9th grade students don’t carry any books or pencils. The school supplies every student with their own laptop. They create multimedia presentations with Microsoft Power Point, receive assignments via e-mail, and conduct research online. So far, the unique program has had positive results.

5.  The test is an important benchmark in insuring that students will be successful in meeting the challenges they will face either in college or the workplace. If they are not able to meet the standards of the exam, how can we expect them to be successful in life? Examinations can be traumatic for both students and their teachers. But just because nobody really enjoys them, we should not disregard them as a necessary part of the educational process.

Задание 2.

Прочитайте текст и заполните пропуски 6-10 частями предложений, обозначенными буквами A-F. Одна из частей в списке A-F лишняя.

Вариант 1.

People often ask which is the most difficult language to learn, and it is not easy to answer (6)__________. A native speaker of Spanish, for example, will find Portuguese much easier to learn than a native speaker of Chinese because Portuguese is very similar to Spanish, while Chinese is very different, so the first language can affect learning a second language. The greater the differences between the second language and our first one, (7)__________. Many people answer that Chinese is the hardest language to learn possibly influenced by the thought of learning the Chinese writing system. The pronunciation of Chinese appears to be very difficult for many foreign learners, too. However, for Japanese speakers, who already use Chinese characters in their own language, learning this language will be less difficult than for speakers of languages using the Roman alphabet.

Some people seem to learn languages readily, (8)__________. Teachers and the circumstances in which the language is learned also play an important role, as well as each learner’s motivation for learning. If people learn a language because they need to use it professionally, they often learn it faster than people studying a language that has no direct use in their day-to-day life.

British diplomats and other embassy staff have found that the second hardest language is Japanese, which will probably come as no surprise to many. But the language they have found the most problematic is Hungarian, which has 35 grammatical cases. This does not mean that Hungarian is the hardest language to learn for everyone, but it causes British diplomatic personnel the most difficulty. However, Tabassaran, a Caucasian language has 48 cases, (9)__________. Different cultures and individuals from those cultures will find different languages more difficult. In the case of Hungarian for British learners, it is not a question of the writing system, which uses a similar alphabet, but the grammatical complexity, though native speakers of related languages may find it easier, (10)__________.

A.  because there are many factors to take into consideration

B.  so it might cause more difficulty if British diplomats had to learn it

C.  while others find it very difficult

D.  while struggling with languages that the British find relatively easy

E.  the harder it will be for most people to learn

F.  as it might seem
