I. Introduction

The news of the Winter Olympic Games in Sochi impressed a great number of people not only in our town, but in all Russia. Different people of different occupations began to think about the future of this region, about how it will have changed by 2014, about what can be done for it by the population of Sochi. We, school-leavers of 2008, will be 23-24 years old then and the main importance of receiving and welcoming the expected guests will be bestowed on us.

As Sochi is my native town, I love it and want it to become famous world resort, I began to think about what I personally can do to add to the fame of this place and to find my own path in life.

I began my study with the wonderful world of modern professions, then I got to know about the education possibilities of Sochi, about the Federal Target Programme for the development of Sochi as a mountain climate resort.

So I decided to find out the importance of making a thorough research in this field.

II. The World of Professions

1. We are facing now a very important choice – what profession to choose.

НЕ нашли? Не то? Что вы ищете?

The problem of choosing the future profession has always been very important. The profession a person chooses in many ways determines his future life. This is a universal problem of our epoch. Every generation in this or that way comes across it. For most people choosing a career is not an easy task. It is one of the most important decisions one makes in life. The properly chosen career makes a person happy and successful for the rest of his life.

2. According to modern Classification of Professions there are about 8000 professions in the world now. Some of them sound strange or even ridiculous to common people, though at close touch they turn out to be rather traditional, like the names of specialists in different spheres of life – engineering, aircraft or medicine.

New technologies generate new terms, the new market changes the names of some trades. On the other hand, some trades have sunk into oblivion. In this way new professions appeared in the list. More than that, nowadays, psychologists are sure that you are more likely to find a job if you call it by a borrowing from another language.

New realities, technologies, branches of industry have appeared lately, they gave way to new jobs. For example:

PR-manager is the project head;

an executive manager is the person under whose supervision the project is fulfilled;

a content manager watches filling of a site, who is engaged in information search for the PR-manager;

a writer – is the person who actually prepares the information, he writes articles, news or press releases;

a copywriter thinks out slogans or concepts;

a media analyst – analyses the project to know how popular the project is in the press;

a production manager prepares banners, gifts, booklets for carrying out of an action;

a traffic manager co-ordinates the work of all these people he distributes tasks, watches that they were always busy as time is precious especially now.

a green keeper – is the person who is looking after grass (for example, on a golf-floor).

A coacher - is the adviser of the head on creation of structure of the personnel, personnel selection and strategy of crisis management, he organizes psychological trainings for heads and the personnel of the company.

A merchandiser (sales-manager) – is the expert on trade (he tries to introduce correctly even the most unnecessary goods that we buy them).

A supervisor - supervises the work at an office, sales, transportations, even to cleaning premises.
A head hunter - will find an extra-class specialist for the company very quickly.
A hostess – is a woman who knows several languages, works in a small restaurant or a hotel. She serves meals and keeps order there.

A media relation manager – is responsible for dialogue with journalists, but not the press – secretary. He should invite to action, communicate, inquire about the impression etc.

A customizer is a person who decorates clothes according to people`s individual tastes.

Some professions are traditionally Russian, others have foreign roots, for example:

realtors, merchandisers, image-makers, financiers, manager, marker, overbander, PR-director, media relation manager, press secretary, underwriter (страховой агент), green-keeper (ухаживающий за травой на поле для гольфа). These roots are usually of English origin.

3. The leadership of English in the modern world can be explained by numerous factors. Over 300 million of people who live in Great Britain, Australia, New Zealand and the United States of America speak English as a native tongue. English is one of the official languages in Canada, and The Southern African Republic. It is also the second official language used in the former British and U. S. colonies. English is one of the official languages of the United Nations Organization and other political organizations. It is the language of literature, education, modern music, international tourism.

The dominance of English in the contemporary world is explained by the appearance of lots of people who want to learn English not for pleasure or prestige but because English has become the key to international scientific, technological and commercial innovations of today.

Previously the reason for learning any foreign language was not well defined. Knowledge of foreign languages was regarded as a sign of a well-rounded education, but few had really questioned why it was necessary. The problem of learning languages is very important today. Foreign languages are socially demanded especially at the time when the progress in science and technology has led to an explosion of knowledge. The total knowledge of mankind doubles every seven years. English is needed as the main and the most efficient means of information exchange. With the acceptance of English as the international language of technology and commerce appears a new generation of people who know why they are learning the language. Scientists and scholars need it to keep up with developments in their fields. Many students need English because their course of studies includes textbooks available only in English. Young people around the world need English in order to be able to use the Internet, communicate with their partners in other countries and so on.

Many Universities include foreign languages in entrance exams. Students who specialize in humanities, such as History, Sociology, and Philosophy need to know foreign languages for their professional career.

Russia is integrating into the world community and the problem of learning English for the purpose of communication is especially urgent today. In Russia people learn English to be able to exchange the latest information concerning science, technology and commerce with their colleagues; to be able to read foreign newspapers and books.

Foreign languages are especially important for specialists. They should know foreign languages to communicate with their colleagues at conferences, forums, etc., through books and journals or the Internet. Today it is not enough for a professional to know only on foreign language. That is why many young people who begin to think about their future early start learning several languages. For Russian specialists it is good to know not only English, but German and French as well. Undoubtedly, English is number one language that specialists should learn.

III. Contemporary Trends

According to the Rating Agency “Rator” school leavers haven`t changed their choice of a profession for 10 years.

From the scheme we can see that school leavers prefer economics, management, law, IT and foreign languages.

On the other hand, institutes teach specialists in 3 main spheres: economics and management, law and IT because:

1.  they are really demanded by the society, such specialists work in different branches of economy, business, industry or state structures.

2.  such educational programmes don`t need special investments, they can be easily introduced in different state or commercial institutes.

3.  institutes earn more money because the most popular qualification teaching is usually paid.

But it might seem that such inclination towards only these professions is dangerous for the country`s development.

The members of the educational project “Fortune” of the Moskovsky Komsomolets newspaper analysed today`s labour market and came to the conclusion that the most popular professions are in 12 spheres of business (put in the order of importance):

Finance Banks and Investment FMCG (fast moving consumer goods) IT and Tellsystems Building and Architecture Transport and Logistics Marketing, Ads, PR Personnel Department (HR) Industry and Technologies Medicine and Pharmacy Law Tourism, Hotels and Service.

Each of these trends has got a great number of different professions to make really successful career.

IV. How to Choose a Career

The choice of a future profession is the main thing in the life of a school leaver. The choice will define what person he/she will become, to what social strata he will belong, what kind of life he will live. It will define his life style, his job, rest, family, friends and so on. His professional well being will define all his life. The initial stage of all this is the correct choice of a future career.

Each of us is searching for information about different jobs. Then we analyze it, assess and make the image of a certain job. We also find out the personal characteristics which these jobs demand from workers. In order to get the best idea we must try to learn as much as possible about the job.

It is not an easy task to define your place in society. Many sciences deal with the problem – psychology, sociology, economics, philosophy, medicine, law, pedagogy, etc. I understand that:

a) First of all, to become a good specialist we have to learn well a lot of different subjects at school.

b) Then, we should know our interests, inclinations and abilities which would correspond to the demands of a certain profession. If they are in harmony with each other the worker will be satisfied with his job & with his life. It means that if a person has some features he wants to get rid of he will try and succeed in doing it. (Like A. Suvorov, for example, who was a weak, unhealthy child, but thanks to his strong determination he became an outstanding leader in the history of Russia)

c) But we must state here that new time sets new demands for personal features of the workers, because the scientific breakthrough of nowadays changes the labour market radically.

d) It is also very important to have a strong interest to what you are doing or are going to do. Our interest makes us learn, widens our outlook, helps us to overcome all difficulties & obstacles.

Soon our interests become our inclinations, we strive for this or that activity & try to get good results.

e) Of course, we cannot solve all these problems ourselves. In this case the role of psychologists is hard to overestimate. But psychologists do not make the decision for us. They help school leavers to see and understand their problems, to see ways of improving and developing their personalities. They help young people to see their good qualities and drawbacks. In the result young people are able to make a good choice themselves.

For example, here is some advice how to choose a career and to find the right job, according to the personal features of the character.

Step 1: Look at the circles. First, compare the jobs in Circle A with the jobs in Circle B. Which group of jobs attracts you more& you have three points to give. For example, you could give Circle A two points and Circle B one point, or you could give Circle A zero points and Circle B three points. The total must be 3. write the number of points in the boxes on the line from Circle A to Circle B. Continue in the same way so that you compare all the circles.

Step 2:

Add up the points for each circle. Draw a graph to show the total for each circle. Now read about the circles that you gave the highest points.

V. Possibilities of Getting Education in Sochi

The Local University of Tourism prepares specialists in the following spheres: economists, managers, lawyers, engineers (in traffic), engineers (in landscape building), tourism service, building engineers, designers (environment), teachers, IT-specialists.

Other institutes prepare specialists in different spheres of life.

At the Western Institute of the Humanities, Economics and Law they prepare specialists in Psychology, History, Law, Philology, Teaching, Economics, Management, Commerce, Marketing, PE, Social workers, IT.

If we analyse the professions which are taught at local institutions of secondary special education, we shall have the following: computers, management (in different spheres), economics, law, land law, hot-water systems, transport, insurance, nursery, trade, cookery and confectionery, ship repairing, meteorology, ecology, IT ( Information Technologies), public catering and service, tourism and service, car repairing, social work, finance, languages, advertising industry, musical performing, singing, conducting, drawing and folk craftsmanship.

It should be noted that 6 special secondary institutions prepare economists, 3 teach law, 4 prepare managers. The other professionals are taught only at one or two institutions, which can be seen from following scheme.

VI. Advantages of Making a Good Career in Sochi

If the school-leavers have chosen some particular profession to learn, they make another step: they should decide where to continue their education and where, in what place, their knowledge and skill will be wanted.

If we speak about Sochi, we can distinguish specific areas of activities here:

• Health care

• Building

• Work in transport (water, air, rail, roads)

• Food and catering industry

• Event marketing

• Tourism

• Sport

• Green keepers

• Hotel facilities

• Boundary services

• Customs

• Education

• Small business

• Medicine

• Book keeping

• Resort

• Trade

• Entertainment and so on.

Why can Sochi be called peculiar now? Because by 2014 Sochi is going to be completely reconstructed.

a) Sochi’s economy will diversify from just summer tourism to include winter sports and business tourism. The area’s visitor base is expected to increase from the current four million to six million, making efficient year-round use of the infrastructure. (The winter tourism season in Sochi currently attracts considerably fewer tourists than the summer (a 90% reduction)).

b) Existing Accommodations in Sochi area have to be improved and built, as the southern part of Sochi currently offers approximately 20,700 hotel rooms classified in 3-star to 5- star categories and an additional 4,600 rooms in the 2-star category. Additionally, there are over 20,500 rooms in "private hotels". The Krasnaya Polyana region of Sochi already offers 2,500 rooms.

c) The FTP, or to give it its proper title, the Federal Target Programme for the Development of Sochi as a mountain climate resort 2006–2014, is a comprehensive plan aimed at upgrading the city to the level of a year-round, world-class destination. The funds will be spent on a wide variety of projects over the defined period, including transport, education, environment, telecom, electrical power generation and management, waste management, accommodation, resort and sports facilities.

Sochi is a unique and specific place. It is the place of different summit meetings, conferences, forums, competitions, contests.

• Sochi is involved in the work of different associations. On the activities of the town authorities a new Non-commercial organization “The South Association of Health- Resort-Tourist Branches of Industry” (ЮАПКО) was formed in Sochi. Its aim is to make Sochi a world health resort. For this agreements have been signed with the Russian Barmen Association. Negotiations are being held with the Russian Union of Tourist Industry workers, with the National Academy of Tourism. (I can proudly mention here that the former pupil of our school and the present member of the State Duma Yuri Barsyikin has been chosen member of the Trustee Council of the Association).

• As Sochi is a seaport much attention is paid to the sea gate of our town. Sochi is the only Russian sea port which has become member of the Mediterranean Cruise Ports “Medcruise” Association. The general assembly of the Association was held in Sochi in May, 2007. Sochi seaport aims at increasing the number of tourists here and at modernizing the sea harbor and engineering 2010 the port will be able to serve up to 150-200 cruise ships a year.

We can guess that tourism managers might be in great demand in Sochi in the nearest decade. Together with thousands of sportsmen, journalists and public figures. Sochi will attract a lot of sports fans and tourists. The task of tourism managers will be great. They will have to convince people that Sochi is an attractive place not only because of the Winter Olympic Games in 2014. they will have to tell truthfully the advantages of visiting this place in all seasons, which will make our town an all-year-round popular resort.

An experienced tourism manager deals with great amount of information, he must be able to make decisions quickly and know some foreign language (or languages). He must be punctual, self-disciplined, communicative, intelligent. In other words he must be an excellent specialist in his sphere of activity. The town authorities began to solve the problem of preparing specialists for tourists industry. We can prove it, because our University of Health Resort Business and Tourism has the faculties “Socio-cultural service and tourism”, “Tourism”, “Health Resort management, excursion and tourism business” and “Service”.

If we take special secondary educational institutions, prepares specialists in catering, service in providing food and meals, tourist service and hotel business.

The profession of a guide also seems to be important for the future development of my native town in preparing for the Olympic Games 2014.

Guides accompany tourists and foreign guests in their trips, excursions and bus-tours. Guides meet a lot of people from different countries. They should be communicative, good-natured, punctual, tactful. Of course, they must speak foreign languages fluently.

There is one more profession in which excellent knowledge of the language is necessary. I mean translators and interpreters. They can work at different joint enterprises, firms and companies. But the main thing is that interpreters. They play the role of negotiators (посредники) between the cultures of different countries. Therefore, they ought to know quite well the customs, traditions and the way of life of the people whose language they learn and use. It must be noted that translators and interpreters have a chance to self-perfection and self-realisation in written translation, simultaneous translation, translation of films, books, journals etc. Such specialists have to be intelligent, communicative, thoughtful, hardworking and so on and so forth.

If we think carefully about people with the knowledge off foreign languages, we must not forget those who teach the languages our town will need, the more highly qualified teachers will be required. The profession of a teacher is unique.

VII. Conclusion

I come to the that we live in very interesting, breath-taking time. A wide road is open before us, the world of thousands of professions. Some of them are as old as our civilization (teachers, doctors, builders, etc.), some are modern, born with advancement of scientific and technological development (such as managers, supervisors, computer operators and so on). It is very difficult to find the one and only job you will do with great interest and satisfaction. The majority of young people choose contemporary trends.

Of course, each profession demands certain qualities of the workers, so before choosing, we should learn our own features of the character, our likes, dislikes, inclination and interests. There are different educational institutions in Sochi, which can teach necessary specialists in different spheres of life which will be in great demand during this period of the great evolution of this region.

Besides, I find it useful to stress out the advice of psychologists how to find a job begin the working career, to adjust oneself and succeed on the job.

Taking everything into consideration, I come to the conclusion that

a)  it is possible to get a good and important education in Sochi;

b)  Sochi greatly needs good young specialists, who will help our native town to develop, to become world famous summer and winter resort, because the future belongs to the young.
