Monarch Without a Kingdom

This November, a hundred million butterflies will drop from the sky over Mexico, like autumn leaves. But for how long? Genetically modified maize could mean extinction for this beautiful butterfly. Rafael Ruiz reports.

НЕ нашли? Не то? Что вы ищете?

Although its body is about 3 cm and it only weighs 1 g, the Monarch butterfly manages to travel 5,000 km each year. It seems to be so fragile, but its long journeys are proof of its amazing ability to survive. This autumn, the Monarch butterfly will once more set out on its journey from the US. It will keep going until it reaches Mexico. 1 __________

In November, millions of Monarchs fall like bright, golden rain onto the forests in the mountains of central Mexico. In the silence of these mountains you can hear a strange flapping of wings, as the Monarchs arrive at their destination. 2 _________

Before reaching their journey's end they have faced strong winds, rain and snowstorms and they do not all manage to reach their destination. When the winters are really bad, perhaps 70 per cent of them will not survive. Their long journey to Mexico is thought to be one of the most amazing events in the whole of the American continent. When they get there they will stay until the beginning of April, when their internal calendar, tells them that it is time to go back. 3 _________

These delicate creatures now face danger of another kind - from scientific progress. 4 _________

Laboratory experiments have shown that half of the butterflies which feed on the leaves of genetically modified maize die within 48 hours. Not all experts agree that this variety of maize is responsible for the threat to the Monarchs. 5 _________

Greenpeace is campaigning against genetically modified, products (in Spain, therefore already 20,000 hectares of modified maize). The environmental organization recently published a fist of 100 species of butterfly in Europe alone which are threatened with extinction.

An Unforgettable Show

I had never have been to see a magician before and I was very excited. Every Christmas, our parents always used to take us somewhere special. They would to take us either to the circus or to see a show.

At last, Saturday came. 1 had had been looking forward to it all week. We had booked tickets in advance, so we had been managed to get good seats. Outside, it was freezing cold. It had been not snowing all day and so everything was covered in a white blanket. The atmosphere was really magical.

Inside, the theatre was full. We had been waiting for about 15 minutes when suddenly the magician has

appeared on stage.

First of all, he started pulling rabbits out of a hat and pigeons out of his pocket. Then, he did swallowed about ten ping pong balls. He and did various card tricks, too.

The last trick he did was great: he 'cut' a woman in half and then put her together again. When the show

Lost in the Australian Bush

The airplane crashed in the middle of nowhere. There were no roads, no houses and no people. There was only bush, and rocks as far as the eyes could see. Only two children survived the crash.

The airplane was on fire. The girl pulled her small brother away from it.

'Run, Pete,' she shouted. 'Quick!'

They ran through the bush as fast as they could. Then they started to climb up through some rocks. Near the top, they stopped and looked down. From the rocks, they watched the fire.

'Where are we?' asked Peter.

The girl didn't answer. She didn't know. They were lost in the Australian desert. But she couldn't tell Peter that.

Twenty-five hundred kilometres away, in the big city of Adelaide, Uncle Keith was at the airport. He looked at his watch. Keith's brother worked in America. He lived in Charleston, South Carolina, with his wife and two children. This was the children's first visit to Australia. But their airplane was late. It was very late. Uncle Keith waited and waited. He talked to other families. They asked about the plane, but nobody at the airport could tell them anything. Then people began to talk about an accident, about a plane crash. There were no survivors.
