1. Организационный момент

Teacher: Good morning, children! I want to, introduce you guests from Australia. This is Mr. Orlov, his wife Mrs Inna, and their son Nikolai. Victor used to learn in our school from 1976 till 1986. He graduated from school with the gold medal. After graduating from the Polytechnical Stavropol Institute. He worked in Stavropol. He was a computer programmer. Ten years ago he wento to Australia with his family. And works in a big Computer Company. He is a very good specialist. With the help of computers people can do a lot of wonderful things from controlling spaceship up to buying books and participating in virtual conferences. New programmes are needed all the time yo meet the increasing demands of our time.

Victor liked English at school very much. It was his hobby.

His wife Inna. She is from Stavropol. She is a nurse at the kindergarten. And this is their son Nikolai. He is 14. He is the same age with you. They are going to tell us about Australia, and try to answer your questions.

They can speak Russian and English. But they will speak English with you.

Mr. Orlov: Hi, everybody! I am glad to meet you. I am going to represent a country, an island and a continent. You can ask some questions as I speak. We live in Melborne. It is the second largest city of Australia. Its population is about 3 mln. people. It is the financial center of the nation. I work in a big ComputerCompany. I fly every month to England on business.

Ilya: What is the capital of Australia?

Mr. Orlov: Canberra is. It contains a lot of government buildings built in . Its population is 310000 people. It is an important center of learning.

Ann: Do you know who discovered Australia?

Mrs. Orlova: Yes, it was the English explorer Captain James Cook. He reached the eastern coast of the island in 1770. It was on the First of April, the date on whith people celebrate April Fool's Day.

Vadim: And who were the first Europeans to settle in Australia?

Nikolai: The first settlers were the criminals deported from England and brought to Australia between 1788 and 1830. The day when the first of them set foot on this land, January 26, is celebrated as a national holiday. For me that shows that Australians are proud of their back-ground, not ashmed of 1men and women had come to Australia as convicts. There were free settlers too, but most of them had been so poor and unhappy in their own countries that they had nothing to lose there.

Karolina: I can't believe that this continent was uninhabited before the first Englishmen appeared there.

Mr. Orlov: Of course not. It was inhabited by local tribes-aborigines. Now they make up only 1% of the population of Australia. They are skilful in carve on wood, stone. They don't go to school. Aborigines can't watch films at the cinema. They can see only separate stills that don't merge in to a single movement. They hunt wild animals and birds which live only here: kangaroos, emus, dingoes... Aborigines live in the mountain and cook food on fire.

Andrei: What can you say about the climate in Australia? Is it dry, hot?

Mrs. Orlova: Australia is situated in the Southern hemisphere. It means that when we have summer, they have winter. The climate in Australia is rather mild, so it's never very cold. The typical temperatures in July range from +12 to +20. Severe droughts, flood and cyclones happen very often on the continent.

Lena: What animals and birds can live under such climate?

Nikolai: The wild live of Australia is unique. There live a lyrebird, a cockatoo, a buffalo. ( Buffaloes were brought to the north coast as work animals in the 19th centure ), a rabbit, a dingo, an eucalyptus, a koala, a rat, an anteater, a duckbill, an emu, an echidna, a kangaroo. There are more than 40 different kinds of kangaroos in Australia. The bird kookabbura is often called the "laughing jackass".

Oksana: What is the population of Australia and what part of Australia is moderately humid.

Mr. Orlov: The population is 18,3 million people. Only one sixth of the continent-a belt of land a long the north, east and south coasts-is moderately humid.

Marina: I have heard that Australians have their own meaning for the word "out back" can you tell us what it is?

Mrs. Orlova: The Australian Outback or the Australian Bush is a vast territory beyond the urban areas. The heart of the Australian Outback is called the Red Centre which takes its name from the red soil of the desert. It is in the Red Centre that you can find Uluru our most famous rock monolith.

Yulya: What do you know about school life in Australia?

Mrs. Orlova: Education in Australia is compulsory between the ages of 6 and 15. Most children (about 70%) study in state schools where education is free. Most Australians live in cities along the eastern and south-eastern coast. But there are also many remote inland towns on the continent.

Vadim: How are children educated there?

Mrs. Orlova: In several states of Australia there are "School of the Air". These schools are situated in the areas far away from the big cities and towns. The students use a two-way radio or other means of listening to the radio, watching TV and video the students learn about the world around them.

Mr. Orlov: There is also "School through the Mailbox" for children who live far away from any school in the area. Subjects are divided into one or two-weeks units. Each unit including new material, illustration, exercises and tests can be sent to pupils any time.

Andrei: Do school children wear a school uniform?

Nikolai: Yes, we do. We like our school uniform. All pupils wear it.

Marina: I agree with you. We will wear a school uniform next year. I think a school uniform unite pupipls and we have no problem in deciding what to put on in the morning. And how do you spend your free time Nikolai?

Nikolai: There are a lot of opportunities of spending my free time. When I have some free time I go to the cinema, concert, disco clubs, play football with my friends, swim, listen to my favourite music and surf the Internet. School and summer holidays are the perfect time to give children a break from the routines that they're accustomed to, allow them to travel, make friends from around the world and broaden their horizons by acquiring new skills. Australia is a continent which can offer children a great deal of outdoor and cultural activities. Scripture Union Bike Camp. Scripture Union Bike Camp is a non-denominational camp for kids on their school holidays located in New South Wales, Australia. The camp stresses having fun in the outdoors, thus kids spend time cycling, camping, hiking and realizing how they can travel great distances by expending their own energy. The camp travels about 30 miles per day, taking a break every five or six miles. Some days are harder than others depending on the terrain. Kids don't have to carry their own gear as two support vehicles store tents and other camping supplies. Kids help prepare the meals cooked on an open fire. Kids must wear helmets and be at least nine years of age and no older than 12.Grommets Holiday Surfing Camp. Grommets Holiday Surfing Camp is a division of the school, "Let's Go Surfing," the official surf school of Bondi Beach, outside of Sydney, Australia. The holiday camp is a flexible, part-time day camp that offers surf lessons to kids for two hours a day, for kids ages seven to 16. Kids can sign up for one week or several weeks and learn about the beach and surfing safely, understanding waves and riptides, straddling, paddling and standing techniques, and above all, how to catch a wave. The camp provides surfboards, wetsuits, rashvests, sunblock and certificates of completion. Camp Australia. Two brothers, Anthony and Andrew Phillips, established Camp Australia in 1987, a company which offers holiday camps for in various locations around the continent. Each location offers children day camp activities during school holidays such as visits to zoos, arts and crafts projects, mini golf lessons, lacrosse lessons, trips to the local cinema and shopping mall, archery, visits to aquariums, etc. Overall, the camp fills children's days with both creative and entertaining stimuli. It accepts children from both elementary and high school.

Marina: That's great! We spend our free time almost you do. I think I am a part of the global village, because I watch TV shows such "Friend" and "The Simpsons" from the USA. I also eat different food from China, Japan, Italy, and other countries. We play the same computer games. It means that we can find different cultures without going abroad. There are more public information sourses: online libraries, books, films, media.

Mr. Orlov: That's exactly what I wanted to say. Borders are disappearing, businesses are going global, countries and people are becoming more and more interconnected and interdependent. It is not unusual for members of a family to live in different countries and regularly meet for family occasions. Nobody is surprised nowadays when their neighbour works in another city or even another country. People travel the world and get to know each other. They receive a better education and open their minds to new concepts.

Teacher: In the interconnected world people will not only have to understand their own country, speak its language and know its laws, but also understand nations cultures, languages, and religions around the globe. Tolerance will become one of the key values of society, where people will learn to understand and respect each other's differences. There is a universal means of communication: knowledge of English is becoming a must. Almost all business in Russia today is international. Even a secretary has to write letters in English and speak English on the phone.

And best of all: You will find a fantastic job and earn a lot of money.

Cool, isn't it?

I think, you liked this meeting very much. So follow our advice: Learn English!

I want to tell Mr. Orlov and his family many thanks.
