The Growth of the Non-European Population in Britain

At the end of the Second World War, Britain was a country on the very edge of economic collapse. After six years of war there was much work to be done in Britain, but not enough people to do it because most of the men needed for the rebuilding work were still overseas in the armed services.

At first, Britain encouraged immigration from Europe. In fact the Irish remained the largest single group of immigrants until the 1970s. However, it was soon realized that Britain could not only rely on migrants from Europe. In 1948 the nationality laws were changed, giving citizens of the Empire and Commonwealth free entry into Britain.

The first Caribbean immigrants arrived in London soon after the war. Many were former soldiers, sailors or airmen who had fought for Britain in the war. Others were young men with a sense of adventure and desire to see England, which many citizens of the Empire thought of as “the mother country”. Most planned to stay in Britain for a few years, earn money and then return to the Caribbean and their families. However, many did not return.

At first the immigrants met with some difficulties. Housing was one such difficulty in post-war Britain and newcomers competed for a place to live with the local population. There was also some initial hostility to the non-white migrants in various aspects of social life. So the migrants brought their own institutions to Britain and new churches and social clubs.

When the Romans came to Britain, they found it a land of forest and swamp. In order to move their troops rapidly, they made roads. Camps for soldiers were constructed at road junctions. These sites of old Roman camps became centres of trade. Their houses and roads, castles and theatres can still be seen.

There are many examples of Roman influence, it is evident in names of towns ending with - caster, -chister, because “castrum” in Latin denoted a fort, and “castra” – a camp. One of the oldest buildings of the Roman period is the lighthouse, or Pharos, at Dover.

When the Romans had departed (in 410 BC) the English swept over the country and destroyed almost all the civilization which Rome had established. The Anglo-Saxons disliked living in towns. They lived in small agricultural villages, and in houses mainly built of wood.

Scotland provides superb opportunities to enjoy wild and grand scenery which is even more impressive than the postcards suggest. The Climate of Great Britain

The climate of the UK is generally mild and temperate due to the influence of the Gulf Stream. The southwestern winds carry the warmth and moisture and humidity.

The weather is so changeable that the English often say that they have no climate but only weather. Therefore the weather is the favourite topic of conversation in the UK. The most characteristic feature of Britain’s weather is its variability.

The English also say that they have three variants of weather: when it rains in the morning, when it rains in the afternoon or when it rains all day. Sometimes it rains so heavily that they say “It’s raining cats and dogs”.

Rainfall is more or less even throughout the year. In the mountains there is heavier rainfall than in the plains of the south and east. The driest period is from March to June and the wettest months are from October to January. The average range of temperature (from winter to summer) is from 5 to 23 degrees above zero. During a normal summer the temperature sometimes rises above 30 degrees in the south. Winter temperatures below 10 degrees are rare. It seldom snows heavily in winter, frosts are rare.

Canadian English

Canada is officially a bi-lingual country, about a third of its inhabitants are French speaking, direct descendents of the settlers in New France. Canadian French is a stable and well defined language as, say, Yorkshire English, and it has a strong and well-defined literary tradition.

The rest of Canada offers nothing so simple. There is a jocular definition of the Canadian as one who is always mistaken for an Englishman in the United States and for an American in England.

To understand the Canadian language in the XXI century, we shall have to go back to the XVIII.

The first considerable influx of English-speaking settlers was that of Loyalists from the revolting American colonies who formed the original population of Ontario and New Brunswick. There was a settlement of Highlanders started in Prince Edward England Island by Lord Selkirk. This provided a precedent for a number of Scottish colonies in Ontario and Manitoba and marked the beginning of that pervasive Caledonian influence which is such a noticeable feature of Canadian life.

The most surprising thing about the English currently used now in Canada is its homogeneity. Regional differences exist, but they are subtle.

Schooldays of a Rock Star

Bill Wyman, now in his sixties, was a member of The Rolling Stones, one of the most successful rock bands in the world. Here he tells us about his childhood.

“I was one of three kids out of my primary school to get a place at grammar school. I was happy because I liked learning, but my father wasn’t very pleased because I had to wear a uniform. The uniform was expensive, and we were very poor. Also I needed a bicycle because the school was a long way from where I lived.

One day, a boy from school invited me to his house. It was a lovely house – a palace compared with mine. My father said I couldn’t invite my friend back to my house. In fact I didn’t want my friends to visit me – it was too embarrassing.

We lived in a small house. We had no electricity or running water, and the toilet was in the garden. There was no heating in the house. In winter there was ice on the inside of our bedroom windows, so getting out of bed was really hard.

School was going well: I was about 16 and had to take my exams. But one day my father said, “Right, I’ve had enough of your school. You’re leaving.”

I left school and started earning money for the family and I never went to college. That was the end of my education but I can’t complain – after that I got into music, and the rest is history!”
