4th edition of Moscow Design Week in Russia

The world design is back to Moscow: the largest annual exhibition of design in country, Moscow Design Week, will open on 11 October. This year the Organizing Committee traditionally brings projects of the international level to the Russian capital.

Unlike the previous edition of the Moscow Design Week that made a special accent on the work of Russian designers, this year exhibition returns to an international project format that reflects the variety of the design worldwide. This time the goal of the Organizing Committee is to broaden the geography of MDW through presenting the approaches to design in different countries.

The Italian-Russian friendship has found expression in a joint project by Fiera Milano and MDW coined as Hospitality Design 2013 that becomes the largest B2B exhibition in Russia and is held during MDW on 14-17 October at Artplay. Architects, designers, furniture and equipment producers will present the newest specialties of the hotel and restaurant business. The project is based on the strong experience of the international exhibition Host that takes place in Milan and enjoys worldwide success.

American product designer and artist Brad Ascalon is opening in Moscow his new project De-Evolution that shows the dematerialization process and continues the topic of the American dream relegating itself to the status of myth impossible to obtain. This notion is represented by a series of upholstered chairs that appear to melt, or de-evolve, before the viewer’s eyes.

Slovenia will present a selection of product design created in this young European country. The curators have deliberately dedicated their exhibition to the talent of Sloveninan designers instead of brands presentation. 25 selected works include both recent projects of young industry pioneers and classical objects of the second part of the XXth century. The Slovenian ambitions to become a new design empire will become the topic for Philippe Starck's lecture at MDW.

The creative Media Lab area is combining several projects. Educational design talks and lectures will be held within People of Design project. Designers, architects and industry representatives will take the mic to share their unique experience with the audience. Media Lab also includes VIP Lounge space equipped for coffee breaks and business meetings. The area has grown into a unique project and will be presented by a notorious Russian designer.

This year the basic MDW project Press Village is blossoming due to the topic MediAlternative. The participants of the project are field-specific, city and business media from Russia and Europe. Each media presents the visitors a multimedia project or a mini-exhibition that take an attempt to rethink the notion of design and the essence of the traditional data medium such as paper, digital signal or word.

Traditional Route project is curated this time by the chief-editor of the OBJEKT magazine Daria Kotelnikova. Daria will make a selection of 25 main must see events during MDW. OBJEKT Route 2013 will bring together the best showrooms and sites displaying works of the leading world designers, peculiar installations or organizing presentations and workshops.

Design Library has finally outgrown the framework of the informal area of MDW and became the first professional co-working in Moscow. Design Library shows its choice of unconventional designer book storages.

Moscow Design Week is an important cultural event that is integrated into the calendar of international design community together with design weeks in Milan, Paris, London, Tokyo, etc. Moscow Design Week aims to create a design platform in Russia, to develop cultural, economic and professional design climate, to make Moscow the capital of design, both on national and international level.
