All About Union Jack

A WebQuest for 7th Graders

Developed by Margaret Yakovleva

Yermakovskaya Secondary School Rybinsk District

Introduction

Before visiting Britain we should get more information not only about its sights but also about the symbols of the country. What are they? What do you know about the British flag? Would you like to get more information about it?

The Task

We are going to take part in the contest “I open the world” (unknown facts about Britain)? Pupils from different regions of Russia will take part in it. The contest will take place in Yaroslavl from the 1st of October to the 15th of January. Pupils are proposed to write interviews, reports, projects etc. Why not take part in the contest?

By the end of the class you will produce a typed report on the British flag. Use the attached rubrics to guide your presentation. This typed report should be at least two pages in length: one page should consist of written information and one page containing images, pictures or symbols.

All presentations will take place during a subsequent class. Use the following questions to guide the development of your report for the presentation. The topics to be presented are as follows:

How the national flag of GB is called? What is the origin of the term? What is the British flag made up of? What is the history of the flag? What do the crosses of the flag symbolize? Why can we see only three crosses on the British flag? When and where is the British flag flown today?

All About the British Flag

Part I. How Union Jack got its name.

 Флаг Великобритании. Соотношение сторон 1:2..

The national flag of the UK is called Union Flag or Union Jack. The term 'Union Jack' possibly dates from Queen Anne's time (r. 1702-14), but its origin is uncertain.

It may come from the 'jack-et' of the English or Scottish soldiers.

It may come from the name of James I who originated the first union in 1603.

Another alternative is that the name may be derived from a proclamation by Charles II that the Union Flag should be flown only by ships of the Royal Navy as a jack, a small flag at the bowsprit; the term 'jack' once meant small

It is so called because it combines the crosses of the three countries united under one Sovereign - the kingdoms of England and Wales, of Scotland and of Ireland (although since 1921 only Northern Ireland has been part of the United Kingdom).

Part II. What is the British flag made up of?

The flag consists of three heraldic crosses.

The cross saltire of St George, patron saint of England, is a red cross on a white ground.

Флаг Шотландии

The cross saltire of St Andrew, patron saint of Scotland, is a diagonal white cross on a blue ground.

The cross saltire of St Patrick, patron saint of Ireland, is a diagonal red cross on a white ground.

Part III. Why can we see only three crosses on the British flag?

The Welsh dragon does not appear on the Union Flag. This is because when the first Union Flag was created in 1606, the Principality of Wales by that time was already united with England and was no longer a separate principality.

Part IV. The history of the flag.

The cross of St George, patron saint of England is used since the 1270's.

After James I succeeded to the throne, it was combined with the cross of St. Andrew in 1606. The white diagonal cross on the blue ground was added to the first flag in 1603, when after the death of Queen Elizabeth, James VI, king of Scotland, the son of Mary Queen of Scots, became James I, King of England and Scotland. The flag was officially called “The Flag of Royal Colours” but later began to be called Union Jack”.

St Patrick’s cross was combined with the previous Union Flag of St George and St Andrew, after the Act of Union of Ireland with England (and Wales) and Scotland on 1 January 1801, to create the Union Flag that has been flown ever since.

Part VI. What do the crosses of the flag symbolize?

The red cross on a white background, St George’s cross symbolizes England. Saint George is the national saint of England, a soldier in the Roman army who was martyred in Asia Minor. He is said to have saved the life of a princess by killing a dragon. St George’s Day is regarded as England’s national day (23 April).

The white diagonal cross on the blue background, St Andrew’s cross symbolizes

Scotland. Saint Andrew was a fisherman who became a follow of Jesus. He was martyred on an X-shaped cross. 30 November is regarded as Scotland’s national day, St Andrew’s Day.

The red diagonal cross on a white background, St Patrick’s cross symbolizes Northern Ireland. Saint Patrickconverted the Irish to Christianity and saved Ireland from snakes. St Patrick’s Day is regarded as Northern Ireland’s national day (17 March).

The three crosses symbolizes a union of England (and Wales)? Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Part VII. When and where is the British flag flown today?

Union Jack flying

It is today flown above Buckingham Palace, Windsor Castle and Sandringham when The Queen is not in residence.

The Royal Arms of Scotland (Lion Rampant) is flown at the Palace of Holyroodhouse and Balmoral when The Queen is not in residence.

On news of a Royal death, the Union Flag (or the Royal Arms of Scotland (Lion Rampant) where appropriate) is flown at half-mast.

The Royal Standard is never flown at half-mast, as the Sovereign never dies (the new monarch immediately succeeds his or her predecessor).

The flying of the Union Flag on public buildings is decided by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport at The Queen's command.

The Union Flag is flown on Government buildings on days marking the birthdays of members of the Royal Family, Commonwealth Day, Coronation Day, The Queen's official birthday, Remembrance Day and on the days of the State Opening and prorogation of Parliament.

It is also flown on St David's Day (Wales), St George's Day (England), St Andrew's Day (Scotland), and St Patrick's Day (Northern Ireland).

Although the Union Flag originated as a Royal flag, it is now also flown by many people and organizations elsewhere in the United Kingdom by long-established custom.

Its use as an emblem has extended beyond the form of a flag and the Union Jack is frequently depicted on other objects.
