THE Mobility of scientists as AN EXAMPLE of inclusion of Russia’s in the world scientific community

The conference is being jointly organised by the Centre for Sociology of Science and Science-Studies Research (IHST) of the Russian Academy of Sciences, St. Petersburg (http://ihst. *****/), by the Council for Science-Studies of the St. Petersburg Scientific Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences (http://www. spbrc. *****/), and by the Research Committee RC23 Sociology of Science and Technology of the International Sociological Association http://www. /rc23/
Leading experts in the field of sociology of science, sociology of education and research and investigators of scientific mobility are invited from Russia and other countries to take part in the conference.
The conference aims:
o to give a new vision of the development of migration processes in science and education to researchers on the topic of mobility;
o to analyze various types of scientific mobility, taking into account modern tendencies in science and education;
o to research the influence of mobility on the development of migration in modern science and on the division of scientific labor on the international stage;
o to define indicators for that will help to build inclusiveness among countries in the world scientific community;
o to analyze the role of scientific diasporas in assisting the development of domestic sciences.
Thematic Scope of the Conference:
Ø Methodologies and methods of studying mobility, new approaches to studying mobility and the types of mobility of scientists.
Ø Influences of mobility on the development of modern science and the new division of international scientific work.
Ø Indicators of an inclusiveness of certain countries in the world scientific space.
Ø The multipolarity of modern science: its problems and prospects.
Ø A place for Russia in the international division of scientific labour.
Ø The mobility of scientists in modern Russia: scales, regions and disciplinary features.
Ø Comparative analyses of scientific policies related to scientists’ mobility in such countries as Mexico, India, China, Portugal, Poland, Canada and the USA.
Ø The role of scientific Diasporas in assisting the development of domestic sciences: the organization of scientific networks and ‘science for development’.
Ø The mobility of scientists and the European Bologna Process.
Ø Historical stages of Russian scientists’ migration streams.
conference Events and activities: Conference events will be organised in the form of lectures, seminars, round tables and discussions.

The conference does not offer provision for international travel or accommodation support/grant. The Russian organizing committee shall provide an official invitation and may help with arranging the hotel.
Call for paper proposals:

The deadline for submitting paper proposals is May, 20, 2009.
Format of paper proposals:
The abstract of proposed papers should include the objectives of the research, methodological issues, major findings and conclusions. The topic should be confined to the thematic scope of the conference. The abstract should not exceed 500 words (in MS Word). The completed paper should also be communicated in the same format (with clear emphasis on the objectives, methodology, findings and conclusion/ policy implications).

Sightseeing:
The conference will take place in St. Petersburg on the August 17-19th. An excursion will be organized for the participants of the conference around the city in the evening, including a boat-trip along the rivers and canals of St. Petersburg, under the famous opened bridges. Guests will also be able to enjoy a trip to Peterhof, including the fountain and park ensemble which is an outstanding landmark of Russian artistic culture of the 18-19th centuries.



The organizing committee welcomes participation at the conference of young researchers: students, post-graduates, trainees, teachers and researchers.
Young researchers, participating in the conference, not only will raise the level of understanding of migratory processes, but also will have an opportunity to study various approaches to migration policy in different countries. Dialogue with leading domestic and foreign experts will enable young conference participants with a unique possibility to tackle difficult questions and to get acquainted with modern approaches to the management of migration processes.
At the end of the Conference certificates will be given out to young participants.
