N-1: Good afternoon, everybody.
N-2: Good afternoon. We are glad to see you here today.
N-1: I’m sure you remember what holiday all English speaking countries will celebrate the day after tomorrow. What is it?
Ch.: They will celebrate Christmas.
N-2: It’s Christmas! Merry Christmas!
Yes, it’s merry, merry Christmas!
It’s time for hanging stockings,
It’s time for riding sleighs,
It’s time for jolly greeting,
Trees and holly, overeating.
Oh, I love you Merry Christmas
You are the best of holidays!
N-1: Christmas is the best holiday for most British families. It’s the most important festival of the year. It combines the celebration of Jesus Christ’s birth with the traditional festivities of winter.
N-2: And what’s the history of this holiday, I wonder.
N-1: The word “Christmas” comes from the term “Christ’s Mass”. It falls on the 25 of December in the western Christian churches and on the 7 of January in the Orthodox churches and in Russia. (because they follow the Julian calendar).
N-2: Although Christmas is celebrated on December 25th, the actual day of Christ’s birth is not known. The Christmas story comes from the Bible. It tells us an interesting story of shepherds who were watching their sheep when an angel appeared to them. He told them that a Savior had been born in Bethlehem. The shepherds went there to see Jesus. The baby Jesus was born in a stable. His mother was the Virgin Mary and his father was Joseph.
N-2: Once upon a time? Santa Claus and Father Frost met in a special shop where they usually took presents for children.
Santa Claus was in a hurry, he took everything from the shelves. Father Frost was going much more slowly. “Why are you in a hurry?” asked Father Frost, “ we have more than ten days to prepare for Christmas.
“Your calendar is wrong, Christmas is the day after tomorrow on the 25 of the December, replied Santa.
“No, we have Christmas on the 7 of January, “argued Father Frost.
“Really? I’ve never heard about it, but… Sorry, I have no time and besides I have to train everyday to be strong enough to climb up the roofs and go through chimneys to put presents into stockings,” said Santa.
“Why should you climb up the roofs, I simply put the presents under Christmas tree,” replied Father Frost. Then he asked: “Do you have any helpers?”
Santa: “My only helper is a reindeer Rudolph with a shiny red nose. His nose shines in the dark and I can see the way. He is the most important of the other eight. Their names are: Blitzer, Comet, Cupid, Dancer, Dasher, Donner, Prancer, Vixen”.
Father Frost: “I usually travel by horses but my best helper is my granddaughter Snowmaiden. She helps me to give presents to children, to sing songs and dance with them around the fur-tree.”
Santa: “How old is she? What kind of girl is she?”
Father Frost: “She is a nice girl of about 11 years old. She knows a lot of games and songs. Our children are very glad to play games outside and make a snowwoman.”
Santa: “But we call it a snowman, what songs do you usually sing on Christmas?”
Father Frost: “The most popular song is “A fur tree was born in a forest.” And what about you?”
Santa: “We used to sing Christmas Carols but now special groups (usually children) sing carols in the street and collect money for charity. What do you usually eat on this holiday?”
Father Frost: “Different things: salads, roast chicken, fruit and vegetables and of course, drink champagne. I have heard that your dinner is very special.”
Santa: “Oh, yes. Christmas dinner is very special for us. We usually cook turkey, roast potatoes, Brussels sprouts and Christmas pudding.”
Father Frost: “Can you give me recipe of a Christmas pudding?”
Santa: “Sorry, the recipe is very complicated, there are many ingredients in it. I can send you the recipe by post.”
Father Frost: “Thank you very much.”
Santa: “Do you decorate your houses?”
Father Frost: “Yes, of course, we usually decorate fur trees (natural or artificial). We put balls, toys, candles and a star on the top.”
Santa: “A star? We put an angel on the top of the fur tree. We don’t have natural trees in Britain; we decorate our homes with wreath, holly, mistletoe, and ivy. There is a belief that if you kiss someone under mistletoe you’ll be friends forever. And also people from Norway send a natural fur tree to the people of Britain every year. We put it on Trafalgar Square.”
Father Frost: “That’s very exciting. I like all this. What do you wish each other?”
Santa: “We wish Merry Christmas.”
Father Frost: “We also wish Merry Christmas.”
Santa: “Oh, sorry I have to go as quickly as possible. See you! Good luck1”
Father Frost: “Good luck. See you again on Christmas Eve next year.”
N-1: Now Tanya and Lyuda will tell you about customs and traditions of Christmas in America.
Traditions and Customs.
Christmas is a religious holiday. It is the day on which Christians celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. It is a happy holiday. Families come together to share their happiness, attend church, and exchange gifts. In the day before Christmas, parties are held in schools, offices, factories and clubs: homes and stories are crowded with shoppers.
Cities and towns in the United States sparkle with bright lights and decorations. Churches, homes, schools, shops, and streets are decorated with Christmas trees, colored lights, Santa Claus and his reindeer, and nativity scenes showing the stable where Jesus Christ was born.
Store windows display gifts and Christmas scenes. The traditional colors for this holiday are red and green, and the red poinsettia is considered the Christmas flower. On Christmas Eve, The president of the United States turns on the lights of the Christmas tree near the white House and sends his greetings to the nation.
Families prepare for this holiday weeks before. They make special foods. They make and buy gifts. They wrap them with bright paper and ribbons. They choose a tree and then decorate it with ornaments and lights. Houses are decorated with wreaths of holly, evergreens, and mistletoe. Many families share memories by following special ethnic Christmas traditions from their country of origin. Christmas cards are sent to friends and relatives. On Christmas Eve, many read the famous poem “A Visit from Saint Nicholas,” by Clement Moore. Children hang up stockings to receive gifts from Santa Claus. Schools usually have two weeks of vocation, and some families take vocations together.
People wish each other a “Merry Christmas” during this holiday season. In many states, people look forward to snow (White Christmas). Christmas carols are sung on the radio and in public places during this season. Some of the most famous carols are “Silent Night”, “The first Noel”, “Joy to the World”, and “Jingle Bells”. There are many shows on television, called “Christmas Specials”. Churches, organizations and newspapers ask for donations of money and food for needy. Hot meals are served to the poor and homeless. Toys are given to children at Christmas parties by santa Claus.
“A visit from St. Nickolas” by Clement Moore is read by Luida.
N-2: every holiday is associated with definite special things. And now I would like you to listen to the stories about the symbols of Christmas such as a Christmas tree, Christmas stockings, a Christmas pudding and others.
Olya: On Christmas Eve children hang their Christmas stocking on their beds or fireplace mantel. A Christmas stocking is not a real stocking. It is big and beautifully decorated. Children wait for Santa Claus and other miracles.
Ocsana: In Britain people choose a tree and decorate it with ornaments and lights. Have a look at our Christmas tree. It’s wonderful, isn’t it? You can see a lot of toys on it. The lights are different: red, blue, yellow, green. On the top of the Christmas Tree you can see an angel. But on the top of our New Year Tree you can see a star.
Veronica: I’ll tell you about Christmas pudding. In Britain people celebrate Christmas Day with a great Christmas dinner. The main course of the meal is usually turkey. And the traditional dessert is Christmas pudding.
Christmas pudding is a rich, boiled pudding made with flour, suet and dried fruit. There are several customs, associated with Christmas tradition, a silver coin is hidden inside the pudding when it is made. A few holly leaves are placed on top. And before the pudding is cut open and served, brandy is poured over it. Then it is eaten with cream.
And the silver coin hidden in the pudding?” The person that finds it is guaranted to receive great health, wealth and happiness.
Helen: The first Christmas Card. Today we send millions of Christmas cards every year. But in fact the Christmas card is a relatively modern invention. The first real Christmas card was designed in London, England in 1840. The designer was John Horsley, a well known British painter. Horsley produced 1,000 cards and offered them for sale 1s (one shilling) each. They were printed on stiff card and colored by hand, with the greeting: “A Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you”. The card shows three pictures: in the centre, a family party; to one side the hungry receiving food; to the other side the poor being clothed. With most people the idea was a great success and the Christmas card quickly become popular.
As Christmas is the birthday of Jesus Christ, cards often show scenes of his nativity. Others show images associated with Christmas such as wintry scenes of snow-laden pines, Father Christmas, stars, candles or holly. The traditional greetings written on a Christmas card are “Merry Christmas”, “Happy Xmas” or “Happy Noel”.
N-1: Now look at the table, pleas. Here you can see candles. They are not here by chance. One church writer said that the wax of a candle represented Christ’s body, the wick his soul and the flame his imperishable, divine nature.
Один церковный писатель писал: воск свечи символизирует тело Христа, фитиль – его душу и пламя – его вечную божественную натуру.
N-2: The 26 of December is called Boxing Day, maybe because in the past boxes of food and gifts were given to the poor. Today this is a day of relaxation, sporting events, dances or going to the theatre to matinee performances. Families with children often go to see pantomimes, which is a very popular custom. Here you can see boxes of presents. Usually these boxes are wraped up with bright papers and tied up with red ribbons.
N-1: Now I want to check how attentive you have been today, what you have remembered from our stories. Look at the blackboard and answer the following questions:
1. Where was Santa Claus born?
2. Where does Santa Claus live?
3. Who is the Snowmaiden?
4. Where does santa put his gifts for all good children?
5. Where does Grandfather Frost leave his gifts for all good children?
6. Where does Russian Grandfather Frost live?
N-2: Before Christmas children write letters to Santa Claus. In the letters they tell Santa Claus what they want for Christmas and promise to be good in the coming year. Now I would like you to listen to Linda Higgin’s letter to Santa Claus.
If you want to get presents, don’t forget to write letters to Santa Claus or Father Frost.
N-1: Now it’s high time for Christmas dinner. As we have already mentioned, British people eat turkey and a pudding for dessert. Let’s taste it and we’ll find out who will be the happiest person in the coming year. Help yourself.
N-2: Keep silence. Soon wonderful Christmas miracles will begin. Let’s sing a song “Jingle Bells”.
N-1: Now I would like to pay your attention to the epigraph of our party:
“The true message of Christmas – to share what you have with others.”
«Дед Мороз - не сказка. Иногда это подлинная реальность: бескорыстно творимое добро.»
Be kind and do kind things and then everything will be O’K in our not very simple world and let’s finish our party with Christmas wishes: “ We wish a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!”
