PURCHASING AND SELLING CASH

AND TRAVELLER’S CHEQUES

In the bureau de change.

Customer: Good morning.

Cashier: Good morning, sir. Can I help you?

Customer: Could you change these dollars for pounds, please?

Cashier: Yes, certainly, may I have your identification card?

Customer: Here it is.

Cashier: Thank you. Here is the money and the receipt, please.

Customer: Thank you very much. And may I ask you a question?

Cashier: Why, certainly. I’ll try to be of help.

Customer: Well, you see, I’m going on a trip to Africa soon. How should I take my money?

Cashier: What countries do you plan to visit?

Customer: Just Kenya.

Cashier: Well, you have four possible ways: take dollars, pounds or buy traveller’s cheques in

dollars or in sterling. The cheques are certainly safer.

Customer: And in which currency?

Cashier: The dollar’s cheques are probably easier to cash, but as you will be in Kenya, the pound

sterling’s traveller’s cheques will be just as practical.

Customer: Then I am buying cheques in pounds for 500 Pounds.

Cashier: Fine. I’ll give you 400 Pounds in cheques of twenty and the remaining part in tens.

Customer: That sounds all right. How long will that take?

Cashier: About twenty minutes.

Customer: All right.

Cashier: I’ll just take your name and address, sir … Thank you … Here are the cheques.

Customer: Thank you.

Cashier: You are welcome.

Traveller’s cheques.

Traveller’s cheques originated in America and are now widely issued by many retail banks are very big or intermediate or small banks doing business for private customers mostly. Besides, various banking groups and travel organizations issue traveller’s cheques. Traveller’s cheques can be used as a form of payment at home and abroad They are paid by the customer when they are purchased. Usually a commission of one percent of the total value of the cheques is charged. Traveller’s cheques must be signed for the first time immediately on purchase. And they must be signed for the second time in the presence of the cashier when cashed. This system of two signatures prevents traveller’s cheques from being misused when they are stolen. Usually cheques can be cashed only for the purchaser. Traveller’s cheques have the following advantages as compared with cash:

-  they are replaced if lost

-  they are subject to a better exchange rate when converted into another currency

-  they make cashless travel more convenient.

The stores, hotels, restaurants which cash the traveller’s cheques send them to their banks later.

The banks who have issued cheques then request payment from the issuers of the traveller’s cheques and reimburse the payers.
