THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE
The English language has become the '' new Latin '' of the century, the world's top tongue. One billion people speak English. There are many reasons for its popularity.
First, English is easier to learn than most other languages. Second, it borrows words and phrases from every countries which it expands.
80% of all English vocabulary comes from other languages. Many words have entered English as a result of trade and colonial expansion. English is so widespread nowadays because it has become the standard language for all kinds of international communication.
80% of all information in the world’s computers is in English nearly 50% of all companies in Europe communicate with one another in English.
English is also the international language of business people, diplomats and politicians, scientists and musicians, doctors and students.
is the main and most efficient means of information exchange between the people of our planet.
Learning English broadens our mind and way of thinking. So English is a global language nowadays. Problems of the 21st century, such as the problems of war and peace, ecology, democracy and many others can not be solved if people don't speak the same language. I think that English is going to become even more important as a global language dominating world trade, computers and mass media.
I'm fond of traveling, computing, reading, art and music and I’m sure I can't do without English.

MY FUTURE PROFESSION
I was always good in mathematics and physics. My parents bought me a computer when I was in the 10th form. Since then I knew that I would become a specialist in computer technologies – a computer puter industry is developing so fast, that it comprises almost all spheres of professional life. No business now is possible without computers. This is especially true about automated manufacturing of products and puter control of automated production opens new horizons for the cheap and quality production of goods. Information is now generated, transmitted, received and stored electronically through computer networks on a scale unprecedented in history, and there is every indication that the explosive rate of growth in this field will puter engineering is a general field. It deals with both electric and electronic industries. Engineers in the field of electric and electronic engineering and concerned with all aspects of electrical puter engineering is now the most rapidly growing field. The electronics of computer is the design and manufacture of memory systems, of central processing units, and of peripheral devices. The most prospective industry now is the Very Large Scale Integration (VLSI) and new computer architectures. The field of computer science is closely related to computer engineering; however, the task of making computer more “intelligent” (artificial intelligence), through creation of sophisticated programs or development of higher level machine languages or other means, is generally regarded as the dream of computer science. So, as you see, there are a lot of employment opportunities in my field. I don’t worry about finding a job. The most important thing for me now is to study well and to graduate from the College.

ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION
Each year new factories and plants are being built and more and more they pollute the environment. Radiation has become the subject to control. Transport is one of the main offenders in noise pollution. The land pollution results from the use of chemical and pesticides. The nuclear weapons are also a great threat to all humanity. We must eliminate all of them in order to prevent the danger of their use or it will lead to an ecological catastrophe. We must fight for clear environment because to protect nature means to protect man. Now industrially developed states cannot ignore the problem of environmental protection. The main aim in this policy is to control atmospheric and water pollution, the study of man's influence on the climate, biological and genetic consequences of pollution, protection of rare and vanishing plants and animals. Control of marine pollution is based on international conventions. The air that we breathe is polluted with harmful substances. People often get ill and die. There are lots of measures to be done to prevent our world from pollution. We must plant greenery in big cities, we must remove factories and plants out of the cities, we must create pollution control system. In several countries there are organizations fighting for peace and clear environment. The most famous is "Green peace ". It has united thousands of people and achieved much success.

OUR PLANET EARTH
The planet Earth is only a tiny part of the universe, but it's the only place where human beings can live. Today, our planet is in serious danger. Acid rains, global warming, air and water pollution, overpopulation are the problems that threaten human life on Earth. Who is to blame for the disaster? The answer is simple: all of us. Our forests are disappearing because they are cut down or burnt. If this trend continues, one day we won't have enough oxygen to breathe. The seas are in danger. They are filled with poison: industrial and nuclear waste, chemical fertilisers and pesticides. The Mediterranean is already nearly dead; the North Sea is following. The Aral Sea is on the brink of extinction. If nothing is done about it, one day nothing will be able to live in the seas. Every ten minutes one kind of animal, plant or insect dies out for ever. If nothing is done about it, one million species that are alive today may soon become extinct. Air pollution is another serious problem. In Cairo just breathing the air is dangerous — equivalent to smoking two packs of cigarettes a day. The same holds true for many Russian cities. Factories emit tons of harmful chemicals. These emissions have disastrous consequences for our planet. They are the main reason for the greenhouse effect and acid rains. An even greater threat are nuclear power stations. We all know how tragic the consequences of the Chernobyl disaster are. Fortunately, it's not too late to solve these problems. We have the time, the money and even the technology to make our planet a better, cleaner and safer place. We can plant trees and create parks for endangered species. We can recycle litter. We can support green parties and put pressure on those in power. Together we can save the planet and all of us with it.

COMPUTER REVOLUTION
50 years ago people didn't even hear of computers, and today we cannot imagine life without puter technology is the fastest-growing industry in the world. The first computer was the size of a minibus and weighed a ton. Today, its job can be done by a chip the size of a pin head. And the revolution is still going on. Very soon we'll have computers that we'll wear on our wrists or even in our glasses and earrings. The next generation of computers will be able to talk and even think for themselves. They will contain electronic "neural networks". Of course, they'll be still a lot simpler than human brains, but it will be a great step forward. Such computers will help to diagnose illnesses, find minerals, identify criminals and control space travel.
Some people say that computers are dangerous, but I don't agree with them. They save a lot of time. They seldom make mistakes. It's much faster and easier to surf the Internet than to go to the library. On-line shopping makes it possible to find exactly what you want at the best price, saving both time and money. E-mail is a great invention, too. It's faster than sending a letter and cheaper than sending a telegram. All in all, I strongly believe that computers are a useful tool. They have changed our life for the better. So why shouldn't we make them work to our advantage?
QUESTION
1. Have you got a computer?
2. Do you think it's a useful tool?
3. Will computers become smaller in the future?
4. Can the Internet help you to do your homework?
5. Can computers help us to learn foreign languages?
6. Do you play computer games?
7. What are the advantages of on-line shopping?
8. What are the advantages of e-mail?
9. Do you think that computers are bad for health?

COMPUTERIZATION OF ECONOMY
Information science deals with the laws as well as ways and means of accumulating and processing information. The necessity to store and exchange information led to the development of speech and writing, printing and art, radio and TV.
But the most important thing about utilization of information is the planning of purposeful activity aimed at solving problems or making decisions on the basis of the acquired information. And until recently this planning was performed by the human mind exclusively. The invention on computers, calculating machines capable of processing information, cardinally changed, the situation. The computer performs very simple actions, but its advantage is the speed it calculates at. In fact, the computer performs hundreds of thousands of operations per second. Moreover, having done one operation, it is capable of choosing further actions by it self.
But to utilize this operation, this miraculous advantage of the new machines one has to be able to synthesize an algorithm and translate it into a "language" that computers can understand. It became possible after the wonderful discovery that all logic actions of the living being can be described in the mathematic language - in the from of simple commands such as addition, deduction, comparison.
Computers are penetrating all spheres of human activity, in many of them they have become indispensable. They calculate orbits, guide spaceships and planes, calculate the targets of economic development, play chess, teach pupils, help house wives to choose a menu.
Computerization of economy is the agenda of the world's economic-development. And it is the young generation who will implement it tomorrow. That's why it is important that school students should learn to handle computers today at school. They must get ready to meet the task.

INTERNET: HOW IT AFFECTS US
We live in a multi-media society. How does the internet affect our lives? It can be very helpful to people who carefully choose websites that they visit. The internet can increase our knowledge of the outside world; there is much high-quality information that can help us understand many fields of study: science, medicine, arts and so on. In this global network you can find any information in a few minutes. Otherwise you would have to search for the necessary information in directories, libraries or on the phone for a long time.
The internet has already revolutionized the way we live and work. But these are still early days for the internet. We don’t know how much it is up-to-date wonder. As the proverb says: “nothing is wonderful, when you get used to it”, that is why the internet fails to astonish us any more. One of the most valuable functions of the internet is its information function. The internet keeps people informed about current events, as well as the latest achievements in science and culture. You can even find out how to pass from the underground station to the house of your girlfriend, who recently moved to London. Recently a system of distance learning became popular. You can study foreign languages and even study in universities. Individual educational programs can be developed especially for you. The internet is also widely used in business. Thanks to the internet, we have rapid connections with partners from all corners of the world. You can even conduct negotiations, hear and see your contacts and exchange graphic and textual information. On the other hand, there are several serious disadvantages of the internet. Of course, it provides us with a pleasant way to relax and spend our free time, but some people spend an average of six hours or more a day on the network. Many children look at a screen for more hours each day than they do anything else, including studying and sleeping. It’s clear that the network has a powerful influence on their lives, and that its influence is often negative. Another disadvantage is that for many people the internet becomes more “real” than reality, and their own lives seem boring. Also, many people get upset or depressed when they can’t solve problems in real life as quickly as they can do in internet games. In real life they can not simply press “Escape”. The most negative effect of the internet might be people’s addiction to it. People often feel a strange and powerful need to spend time on the network. Addiction to a computer screen is similar to drug or alcohol addiction: people almost never believe they are addicted. One more disadvantage of the internet is the absence of information control. Children receive wide access to porno sites and sites with violence and promoting hate. From that, how much we know about the internet depends on the choices we make and how effectively we use the opportunities of the internet in our time.
QUESTIONS
1. What society do we live in?
2. Can the internet affect our lives?
3. Can the internet increase our knowledge of the outside world?
4. What has the internet already revolutionized?
5. Why do we call the internet an up-to-date wonder?
6. What is one of the most valuable functions of the internet?
7. Did a system if distance learning become popular?
8. Can individual educational programs be developed especially for you?
THE FUTURE OF THE ENGINEERING PROFESSION
Among various recent trends in the engineering profession computerization is the most widespread. The trend in modern engineering offices is also towards puters are increasingly used for solving complex problems as well as for handling and generating the enormous volume of data modern engineers must work with. Scientific methods of engineering are applied in several fields not connected directly to manufacture and construction. Modern engineering is characterized by the broad application of what is known as systems engineering principle-Engineers in industry work not only with machines but also with people, to determine, for example, how machines can be operated most efficiently by workers. A small change in the location of the controls of a machine or of its position with relation to other machines or equipment, or a change in the muscular movements of the operator, often results in greatly increased production. Human-factors engineering seeks to establish criteria for the efficient, human-monitor and govern nuclear reactor operations.

WHAT IS LAW?
Law is valuable not because it is law, but because there is right in it.
Henry Ward Beecher
Law is the system of rules established by the state. It governs our conduct from the cradle to the grave. It protects us while it restricts us. The main aim of law is to consolidate and safeguard the social and state system and its economic foundation.
We live in a society which has developed a complex body of rules to control the activity of its members. There are laws, which govern working conditions, laws, which regulate the life we lead and laws, which control personal relationships. Law tells us how fast we can drive and how long we must attend school. It helps to protect us from unfair commercial practices.
In all countries there is distinction between private - or civil - law and public law. Private law deals with relationships among citizens of a country. Public law deals with relationships between the State and the citizens or between one state and another. The system of law in our country consists of different categories of law: constitutional law and administrative law, criminal law and civil law, international law, financial law etc. Governments use a system of courts and the police to enforce the laws.

MASS MEDIA
The mass media play an important part in our lives. Newspapers, radio and especially TV inform us of what is going on in this world and give us wonderful possibilities for education and entertainment. They also influence the way we see the world and shape our views. Of course, not all newspapers and TV programmers report the events objectively, but serious journalists and TV reporters try to be fair and provide us with reliable information. It is true that the world today is full of dramatic events and most news seems to be bad news. But people aren't interested in ordinary events. That is why there are so many programmers and articles about natural disasters, plane crashes, wars, murders and robberies. Good news doesn't usually make headlines. Bad news does. Some people say that journalists are given too much freedom. They often intrude on people's private lives. They follow celebrities and print sensational stories about them which are untrue or half-true. They take photos of them in their most intimate moments. The question is — should this be allowed? The main source of news for millions of people is television. People like TV news because they can see everything with their own eyes. And that's an important advantage. Seeing, as we know, is believing. Besides, it's much more difficult for politicians to lie in front of the cameras than on the pages of newspapers. Still, many people prefer the radio. It's good to listen to it in the car, or in the open air, or when you do something about the house. Newspapers don't react to events as quickly as TV, but they usually provide us with extra detail, comment and background information. The Internet has recently become another important source of information. Its main advantage is that news appears on the screen as soon as things happen in real life and you don't have to wait for news time on TV.
QUESTIONS
1. Do the media play an important part in your life?
2. Do you think that the media influence our life?
3. Millions of people get most of their news from television. What about you?
4. Do you read newspapers?

7. Do you think it would be nice if all news printed in newspapers and shown on TV was good news?
8. Do you think that journalists are given too much freedom?
9. If people have died in a plane crash, should their bodies be shown on TV?
10. Are you interested in politics? Don't you think that some politicians use the media to influence their voters (избиратели)? What is the main advantage of the Internet?
NEWSPAPERS
In the past people learnt about news from newspapers. Nowadays people usually learn what is happening in the country and in the world from TV or radio news programmers or from the Internet. Still we cannot imagine our life without newspapers. There are dozens of them on every news-stand. There are newspapers for professionals, for businessmen, for children and teenagers, for men and women, for sports fans, for those who are interested in gardening and for those who keep pets. Some newspapers publish serious articles on politics, economy and finance, some aim to entertain their readers. Many newspapers express certain political opinion and people choose them according to their own political beliefs. In short, you can always find a paper which suits your interests. Besides, there are many free local newspapers which are put into your post-box whether you ask for it or not. Probably they are not interesting, because they consist mainly of advertisements, but you can find a lot of useful telephone numbers and addresses there. From time to time I read «Arguments and Facts». It's one of the most popular daily papers, but I don't consider it serious. However, I never miss an article written by Minkin. I think he is a very good journalist. I also like Merinov's cartoons. Sometimes they publish good reviews of new films, new CDs and so on. In short, I think that TV, radio and the Internet have their advantages, but nothing can substitute newspapers.

HOBBIES
Hobbies differ like tastes. If you have chosen a hobby according to your character and taste you are lucky because your life becomes more interesting. Hobbies are divided into four large classes: doing things, making things, collecting things, and learning things. The most popular of all hobby groups is doing things. It includes a wide variety of activities, everything from gardening to travelling and from chess to volleyball. Gardening is one of the oldest of man's hobbies. It's a well-known fact that the English are very fond of gardening and growing flowers, especially roses. Both grown-ups and children are fond of playing different computer games. This is a relatively new hobby but it's becoming more and more popular. Making things includes drawing, painting, making sculpture, designing costumes, handicrafts. Two of the most famous hobby painters were President Eisenhower and Sir Winston Churchill. Some hobbyists write music or play musical instruments. Almost everyone collects something at some period in his life: stamps, coins, matchboxes, books, records, postcards, toys, watches. Some collections have no real value. Others become so large and so valuable that they are housed in museums and galleries. Many world-famous collections started in a small way with one or two items. People with a good deal of money often collect paintings, rare books and other art objects. Often such private collections are given to museums, libraries and public galleries so that others might take pleasure in seeing them.
No matter what kind of hobby a person has, he always has the opportunity of learning from reading about the things he is interested in, he is adding to what he knows. Learning things can be the most exciting aspect of a hobby.

CONSTRUCTION WORK
Building erected nowadays can be divided into two general classes: building for housing and industrial buildings. As far as material concerned buildings can be divided into brick, wood, concrete and steel buildings. Brick is an artificial building material. made of clay, which is then burnt for hardening. Natural stone (rubble masonry) is used for footing and foundations for external walls carrying the load. : '
Buildings made of stone are durable and fire - resisting. The floors divide a building into stories. They may be either of timber or, in brick houses, of reinforced concrete details of big and small sizes. ’
The coverings or upper parts of buildings meant to keep out rain and wind and to preserve the interior from exposure to weather are called roofs. They tie the walls and give the instruction strength and firmness.
Every building must have a beautiful appearance. The interior should be planned to suit the requirements of the occupants while the exterior must be simple with nothing superfluous.
Every building should be provided with water, electricity, ventilation and heating systems, water supply and sewerage systems are called plumbing.
Careful consideration must be given to the amount of money which is going to be spent in building the house. An estimate depending upon the design of the building must be calculated after which work on the site can be started.

ENGLISH HOUSES
The climate of a country is one of the factors that influence the style of its architecture. It can be best illustrated by British residential buildings. The weather in England is often cloudy and there are few sunny days in the winter season, therefore, as a rule, the windows in an English house are of a large size to catch as much light and sunshine as possible. In the houses built in the past century the windows, besides being large, opened upwards, which is very convenient on windy days.
Since there is much rain in England, typical British houses have high, steep roofs where rain water and melting snow can easily flow down.
Most of the houses have a fireplace which forms the most characteristic feature of an English home and is seldom seen in other European countries.
The plan of an English house also differs from that of the houses where we live. English architects plan some apartments vertically instead of planning them horizontally, so that an English family having a separate apartment lives on two or sometimes three floors with rooms connected with a narrow staircase. They find it the most convenient style of apartment. There are usually three rooms in each apartment besides a kitchen and a bathroom: a living room, a bedroom and a dining room.
INTRODUCTION ТО THE WWW AND THE INTERNET
Millions of people around the world use the Internet, to search for and retrieve information on all sorts of topics in a wide variety of areas including the arts, business, government, humanities, news, politics and recreation. People communicate through electronic mail (e-mail), discussion groups, chat channels and other means of informational exchange. They share information and make commercial and business transactions. All this activity is possible because tens of thousands of networks are connected to the Internet and exchange information in the same basic ways.
The World Wide Web (WWW) is a part of the Internet. But it’s not a collection of networks. Rather, it is information that is connected or linked together like a web. You access this information through one interface or tool called a Web browser. The number of resources and services that are part of the World Wide Web is growing extremely fast. In 1996 there were more than 20 million users of the WWW, and more than half the information that is transferred across the Internet is accessed through the using a computer terminal (hardware) connected to a network that is a part of the Internet, and by using a program (software) to browse or retrieve information that is a part of the World Wide Web, the people connected to the Internet and World Wide Web through the local providers have access to a variety of information. Each browser provides a graphical interface. You move from place to place, from site to site on the Web by using a mouse to click on a portion of text, icon or region of a map. These items are called hyperlinks or links. Each link you select represents a document, an image, a video clip or an audio file somewhere on the Internet. The user doesn’t need to know where it is, the browser follows the link.
All sorts of things are available on the WWW. One can use Internet for recreational purposes. Many TV and radio stations broadcast live on the WWW. Essentially, if something can be put into digital format and stored in a computer, then it’s available on the WWW. You can even visit museums, gardens, cities throughout the world, learn foreign languages and meet new friends. And of course you can play computer games through WWW, competing with partners from other countries and continents.
Just a little bit of exploring the World Wide Web will show you what a much of use and fun it is.

The British are known to be great sports-lovers, so when they are neither playing, nor watching games, they like to talk about them. Many of the games we play now have come from Britain.

THE SYSTEM OF EDUCATION IN GREAT BRITAIN
The system of education in any country is aimed at developing a personality for the good of the individual and society as a whole.
Pre-school education in England begins at the age of
3 or 4. Around half of the children at this age attend nursery schools or playgroups mostly organised by parents. Children of this age need care as well as education. That’s why kids play a lot, learn to listen attentively and to behave.
Compulsory primary education begins at the age of five in England, Wales and Scotland and at four in Northern Ireland. Children start their school career in an infant school. Lessons start at 9 a. m. and are over at
4 p. m. They are taught «3 R’s»: Reading, wRiting, aRithtnetic. Pupils have a lot of fun at school, drawing, reading, dancing or singing.
When they are 7 pupils move to a junior school, which lasts four years till they are 11. They study a lot of subjects: English, Mathematics, Science, History, Geography along with Technology, Music, Art and Physical education
Most of children (over 90 per cent) go to state schools where education is free. Only a small proportion of them attend private (Public) or independent schools. Parents have to pay for the education at these schools. The fees are high and only some families can afford it. So such schools are for the representatives of the high class of
England. The most notable Public schools are Eton, Harrow, Winchester, Rugby.
Secondary education begins at 11. The majority of secondary schools are Comprehensive schools where boys and girls study together. Besides, parents can take their sons and daughters to Grammar schools or Secondary Modern schools.
Grammar schools provide an academic course from 11 to 18. They prepare pupils for colleges and universities.
Many children of working class families go to Modern schools. They give a very limited education. Pupils get instruction in woodwork, metalwork, sewing, shorthand, typing and cooking. After finishing such a school a pupil b ecomes an unskilled worker.
The Comprehensive Schools have their own «Gram - таг school* classes and *Modern classes*
Every pupil has to choose a set of subjects to learn. If he takes up Art he will study English Literature, Music, Art, Drama and foreign languages. If he is good at exact and natural sciences, he will learn Science: Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Geography, Economics and Technical Drawing.
The British government encourages careers education in the country. That’s why secondary schools try to break down the barriers between education and business. They set up close links with firms to allow their students to take part in business activities.
At around 16 years old teenagers take some exams and coursework to get General Certificate of Education. Those who choose to stay on at school usually study for two further years to pass A level (Advanced level) exams. These exams will give them a chance to enter the university.
