Task В1- В5

Рекомендуемое время выполнения задания - 15 минут

The people B1 –B5 all want to buy a dog. Read the descriptions of dogs A-H and decide which dog would be the most suitable for these people. For questions B1-B5, choose the correct letter A-H. There are three extra descriptions of dogs which you do not need to use. Write THE LETTERS in the appropriate boxes.

НЕ нашли? Не то? Что вы ищете?

B1 Mr and Mrs Black want to buy a good-sized friendly dog for their big family with three children. It isn’t easy to give a dog a lot of exercise because they live in a town though they have a garden.

B2 Mr and Mrs Williams and their two children live in the country. They have plenty of money and they have a lot of nice things in their big house. To make themselves feel more secure they want to buy a big dog which they can take on long healthy walks.

B3 Miss Benson lives in a small flat near the centre of a city. She is looking for a dog who will be a companion to her. She is out all day working and the dog would stay alone for quite a lot of time.

B4 Mr Fletcher lives on his own in a cottage in the country. He likes going for long walks and wants a dog to accompany him. It must be a short-haired dog, because he doesn’t like to spend much time cleaning the house.

B5 Miss Reed is a businesswoman. She wants a small elegant dog which she could take with her wherever she goes. She would also like to teach the dog some tricks to show off.

A Basenji

This unusual breed, descendant of an ancient hunting dog, costs a lot and is difficult to get. It is an attractive dog which doesn’t bark. It can be independent and is always friendly. The Basenji is the best for noise, ease of grooming, general health and upkeep, but it can be difficult to train. It is a good country dog.

B Basset Hound

It is rather short, only 14 inches at shoulder, but it has a long body and is very heavy. It has got short hair and looks like a very big dachshund or “sausage dog”. It is definitely an outdoor dog because it needs a lot of exercise. In many respects it is a real country dog.

C Yorkshire Terrier

Yorkshire terriers are cheap to keep in a small flat as they can exercise indoors. However, they suffer from many hereditary health problems and are generally fragile so they need occasional checks during the day. They tend to be pushy and manage to dominate some people by appearing helpless and they are not good with children.

D Pyrenean Mountain Dog

Pyrenean Mountain dogs are very large indeed. They have quite long hair and an affectionate expression. They are good guard dogs and are excellent family dogs. A Pyrenean Mountain dog is not a “one-man” dog. It needs plenty of space and lots of exercise.

E Papillon

Papillon is a toy dog, growing to about 8 inches tall. Its name means “butterfly”, because the ears look like butterfly wings. It is cheap to keep and reasonable to look after. Papillons are very friendly with people although can sometimes be aggressive with other dogs and not easy to train. It is suited to a small house or a flat.

F Lhasa Apso

Lhasa Apso is a small dog to about 10 inches high. It has beautiful long wavy hair which has a centre parting and comes down in front of the eyes. The silky coat comes in a variety of colours: honey, gold, black or grey. These dogs need regular cleaning and brushing. They love children and don’t like to be left alone. They are highly trainable.

G Affenpinscher

Its name means “monkey terrier”, and it is really a good description. It is not a big dog with a short rough coat. It has longer hair on the face and has a beard and moustache. These dogs need significant grooming upkeep both coat and teeth. They are happy with limited exercise, but staying alone can be a real problem. Though affable, they are not easily trainable.

H Hungarian Puli

The Hungarian Puli is quite big, it grows to about 17 inches tall. It has an unusual long coat that forms cords, like dreadlocks. It doesn’t need a lot of brushing, because you groom it using your fingers. Though it is an active dog it doesn’t demand an immense amount of exercise. It likes children and is a good family dog.

This was the deal: Boyd Morrison was not a very well-paid engineer. His wife wanted to become a doctor. So, even though Morrison dreamt of a far more creative future for himself, he promised to stick it out as an industrial engineer for the nine years it would take her to get her medical degree. Then he would get nine years – to try to become a famous published author.

In 2005, with his now-MD of a wife giving the go-ahead, Morrison said bye-bye to his job at Microsoft and started writing. Over the next two years, he penned two thrillers and in 2007 made one of the most important connections in all of publishing: he found an agent who was keen on his novels and thought she could sell them to a publishing house.

“They said all these things they liked about my books but then finally decided not to publish them for whatever reason,” says the Seattle-based Morrison.

But Morrison didn’t just want to leave the books sitting idly on his hard drive. With his agent’s agreement, he made them available for free on his website. “It was really an experiment,” he says. “I just wanted to see if I could get the word out just through electronic means or word of mouth.”

He began introducing himself and his work to his one-day (fingers crossed!) fan base on the message boards at such electronic stores as Kindle Boards, MobileReal, and Amazon.

“I did not spend any money marketing myself. I did not take out advertisements. It was word of my mouth and me just talking about the books on those website discussion forums,” he says.

Within three months, he had sold more than 7,500 books. Those sales and the positive reviews he received from fans were proof that Morrison had a following who wanted more. His agent went out to a new round of publishers and in July Morrison signed a two-book deal with Touchstone, a famous publishing house. Hardcover and audio editions of his book The Ark will go on sale this spring. “If you are not J. K. Rowling, going the traditional publishing route is very difficult these days,” says Morrison. “You are not going to get the marketing behind you. To become an author whose books are printed on demand, as most self-published books are, takes some serious energy and innovation.”

A7 What was the agreement between Boyd Morrison and his wife?

1. He was free to write books in his spare time.

2. He would get a degree after his wife.

3. They would take turns in achieving their professional goals.

4. They were prepared to wait for 9 years before starting to earn big money.

A8 What was Morrison’s ambition?

1. to write books on industrial engineering

2. to make more money

3. to write books and become popular

4. to create an electronic book

A9 Which is true of the period for Morrison?

1. He wrote two books.

2. He published two thrillers.

3. He sold his books to his agent.

4. He found a publishing house.

A10 What does Morrison say about the people at the publishing house?

1. They gave no explanations why they refused to publish his books.

2. They liked some things in his books except final scenes.

3. They took their time in making the decision.

4. They spoke nicely but didn’t keep their word.

A11 The word “following” in “...Morrison had a following” means

1. a book which continues the story of his earlier book.

2. a plan of future actions.

3. people who followed Morrison’s example.

4. people who were interested in his works.

A12 Which is the best title for the article?

1. Modern authors use computers for creating their books.

2. Self-publishing has opened the door to a new author.

3. Wait patiently until your dream comes true.

4. Traditional publishing is dying out.

A Roberta, a journalist, has just finished a four-year degree in English Literature. Roberta, 33, who hadn't been in further education since finishing a journalism course 11 years ago, says, “I got more out of doing it later in life than straight after school. When I did my journalism course, we sat in the canteen chatting half the time, but when you're older you realise that the only person you're cheating is yourself if you do that. And when you're older you can understand more because you've done more. It was quite strange having to write an essay after many years. But it was interesting having such knowledgeable teachers.”

B Jane left school without any qualifications and ten years later did a course and got a degree. This gave her a great desire to learn more. Since then, Jane has joined courses ranging from pottery to African cinema. “There’s so much in life to learn, as you get older it becomes a real pleasure. There are no pressures – you don’t have to prove anything. You are there because you want to be. It is great to spend time with people who share common interests. You don't know their names or anything about them, but all the barriers are broken down.”

C Susan joined the Start Your Business course a few months ago and she is now preparing to start an international business in furniture design. The course was taught by a businesswoman, Dianne Shelley. She says, “Susan was full of ideas and is now going to start her own business.” “The course helped me identify so many things”, says Susan, “my ideas developed and the end my idea had become an international business. Diane didn't just teach theory; she illustrated it with examples from her own life. That helped me a lot, because years ago I didn't understand finances. Now I'm not scared of borrowing money because I know the business will be successful.”

D Sonya did a three-day intensive computer course. She works as a publicity assistant at a bank. She says, “I had to take the course as I needed more skills to make me better at my job.” The course covers both practice and theory. Sonya says, “It was quite demanding, they really get you thinking. The group was small and we got more attention, it was easier to ask questions. Now my reports are more professional and I can produce them more quickly.”
