B. Reading
Read the text “The Jackals and the Lion”, and do the following tasks.
Retell the story in written form.
THE JACKALS AND THE LION
Long, long ago there lived a Lion in the wood. He was very big and strong. He was often hungry; he always hunted different animals that were weaker than he. He killed those animals and ate them. The animals were afraid of the Lion. There lived two Jackals in that wood too, and they also were very much frightened by the Lion. They were very unhappy because all the time they had to hide themselves from that hungry and strong Lion.
One evening the Lion saw them and ran after them. The Jackals ran away as quickly as they could. They found a place under a big green tree and hid there. They spent there the whole night. They thought about their dangerous life but they didn’t know what to do, how to save themselves from the fierce Lion. At last in the morning one of the Jackals had a good idea.
They decided to play a trick on the Lion.
“Where were you yesterday?” cried the Lion when he saw them. “Why didn’t you come yesterday? I was very hungry.”
“We were going to visit you yesterday,” said the Jackals. “But a very big Lion jumped out of the wood and wanted to eat us. We ran away from him and hid under a big green tree.”
But the Lion thought that there was only one Lion in that wood and that was him. The Jackals explained to him that the other Lion was bigger and stronger than he was. The Lion asked the Jackals to show him the other Lion.
“All right,” said the Jackals and ran in front of the Lion and showed him the way. They stopped near a big blue lake. “The big lion lives in this lake,” they said. The Lion looked down. He was not a clever lion. So when he saw his face in the water, he thought that it was the other lion. Then, the Lion showed his teeth. And the lion in the water showed his teeth too.
The Lion got very, very angry. “I’ll eat you up, you bad lion!” he cried. Then he jumped into the lake, and he was drowned. And the Jackals were very glad. They laughed and danced and sang songs.
