5. SEVEN WONDERS OF THE ANCIENT WORLD (25 POINTS)
It was a usual day at school which lasts very slowly as usual. I’m only glad that it’ll be a vacation very soon. But our class haven't decided yet that we will do for holidays. And here, the woman of the middle age comes to our class and does the announcement to us:
- Hello, I would like to make you the special proposal. Your class is given opportunity to visit all seven wonders of the world. This round is called: "Miracle revival". But before we will ask me some questions, allow me to add at least: - All miracles of our world were found and restored successfully. The government decided to give opportunity to visit these parts of the world to those schools, those classes which do success in studying. And as your class did special progress in knowledge, you are lucky. Now I’ll give you such brochures, - she told and showed on a glossy leaflet with drawings of fantastically beautiful places with an inscription: "Miracle revival". All class was interested in it and I thought, many of students have already mentally agreed on this tour.
Two weeks passed. It appeared that only one pupil from our class disagreed to visit these places only because he needed to go to relatives. And everything was already ready. And each of us was already prepared for this travel both physically, and morally.
- The first place which we will visit is "Pyramid of Cheops", –the class started hooting and publishing cheers cheerfully.
Having landed, after long flight, we were lodged in the hotel of Egypt. Later, the guy was sent to us who became our guide. We were warned that in each place we will be 3 or 4 days. But further we will visit only Turkey, Greece and Iraq. One day will be equipped, the second day will be a sightseeing tour and its history, the third day we’ll visit "Miracles" visit, and the fourth day we will collect our things.
Having studied the plan of the action, we started sorting the things. There were four places in each room. I and my schoolmates occupied those beds which were liked us. Having classified everything, I asked girls:
- What will we do?
- I would like to roller skates, - my friend answered, on this case everybody looked at her surprisingly.
- What? – almost all girls asked her in chorus again about it.
- What’s a matter? Roller skates are faster than we.
- Really there is nothing to be engaged in Egypt more?
- Well? what do you offer?
- Perhaps we will ask the teacher?
- Well, let’s go.
It appears, the students of our class have already started to ask to our class teacher to this question because that day nobody didn't want to sit in the hotel especially. But our teacher has already thought about everything and therefore all of us were waited by a campaign on a beach accompanied by our guide. We would be lost long ago.
For the second day of our stay in Egypt we were expected by a campaign around the city in which we lodged. That guy that was our guide, appeared the good story-teller. Not many people can really interest in something, and especially our class. Telling, everything absolutely exactly and detailed, colourfully describing any smallest details, he showed sights us. For the third day, we, at last, that had to visit these two "Miracles": Pyramid of Cheops and Lighthouse of Alexandria. And what our guide spoke to us, imprinted in my memory very well: -The Great Pyramid of Giza (also known as the Pyramid of Khufu or the Pyramid of Cheops) is the oldest and largest of the three pyramids in the Giza Necropolis bordering what is now El Giza, Egypt. Based on a mark in an interior chamber naming the work gang and a reference to fourth dynasty Egyptian Pharaoh Khufu,[Egyptologists believe that the pyramid was built as a tomb over a 10 to 20-year period concluding around 2560 BCE. Initially at 146.5 metres (481 feet), the Great Pyramid was the tallest man-made structure in the world for over 3,800 years. Originally, the Great Pyramid was covered by casing stones that formed a smooth outer surface; what is seen today is the underlying core structure. Some of the casing stones that once covered the structure can still be seen around the base. There have been varying scientific and alternative theories about the Great Pyramid's construction techniques. Most accepted construction hypotheses are based on the idea that it was built by moving huge stones from a quarry and dragging and lifting them into place.
There are three known chambers inside the Great Pyramid. The lowest chamber is cut into the bedrock upon which the pyramid was built and was unfinished. The so-called Queen's Chamber and King's Chamber are higher up within the pyramid structure. The Great Pyramid of Giza is the only pyramid in Egypt known to contain both ascending and descending passages. The main part of the Giza complex is a setting of buildings that included two mortuary temples in honour of Khufu (one close to the pyramid and one near the Nile), three smaller pyramids for Khufu's wives, an even smaller "satellite" pyramid, a raised causeway connecting the two temples, and smallmastaba tombs surrounding the pyramid for nobles.
And as about the second miracle - the Lighthouse of Alexandria:
-The lighthouse was constructed in the 3rd century BC. After Alexander the Great died of a fever at age 32, the first Ptolemy (Ptolemy I Soter) announced himself king in 305 BC, and commissioned its construction shortly thereafter. The building was finished during the reign of his son, the second Ptolemy (Ptolemy II Philadelphus). It took 12 years to complete, at a total cost of 800 talents, and served as a prototype for all later lighthouses in the world. The light was produced by a furnace at the top and the tower was said to have been built mostly with solid blocks of limestone. Strabo reported that Sostratus had a dedication inscribed in metal letters to the "Saviour Gods". Later Pliny the Elder wrote that Sostratus was the architect, which is disputed. In the second century AD the satirist Lucian wrote that Sostratus inscribed his name under plaster bearing the name of Ptolemy. This was so that when the plaster with Ptolemy's name fell off, Sostratus's name would be visible in the stone.
For the fourth day we got ready sucessfully and we went to Turkey, Greece and Iraq.
After two weeks of this tour many the remarkable and cheerful moments remained in my memory but I perfectly remembered everything that I was told about each of miracles:
Temple of Artemis
The new temple was sponsored at least in part by Croesus, who founded Lydia's empire and was overlord of Ephesus, and was designed and constructed from around 550 BC by the Cretan architect Chersiphron and his son Metagenes. It was some 115 m (377 ft) long and 46 m (151 ft) wide, supposedly the first Greek temple built of marble. Its peripteral columns stood some 13 m (40 ft) high, in double rows that formed a wide ceremonial passage around the cella that housed the goddess' cult image. Thirty-six of these columns were, according to Pliny, decorated by carvings in relief. A new ebony or blackened grapewood cult statue was sculpted by Endoios, and a naiskos to house it was erected east of the open-air altar.
The Mausoleum at Halicarnassus or Tomb of Mausolus: The structure was designed by the Greek architects Satyros and Pythius of Priene. The word mausoleum has now come to be used generically for an above-ground tomb.
Zeus Olimpiysky's statue — Pheidias's work. The Olympic Games held here already of 300 years in honor of god Zeus, enjoyed wide popularity of the people. Despite it, in Greece there was no Zeus's main temple and only in 470 started collecting donations on its construction.
Colossus of Rhodes: The people of Rhodes decided to sell the thrown obsidional tools and to construct a statue of god of the Sun esteemed by them Helios to thank it for protection. Helios was not simply especially esteemed deity on the island — on a legend he was his founder: without taking place, to it devoted, solar god took out the island on the hands from sea depth.
• Semiramis's hanging gardens: Navukhodonosor ordered to build hanging gardens. However in historical science the name of gardens was mistakenly assigned to the Assyrian queen Semiramis, living two centuries before. Semiramis's hanging gardens are one of wonders of the world in the game Civilization V. They become available only for the powers which have studied public institute "Tradition" which promotes increase in population in the country.
I spent time in the company of my schoolmates perfectly, and we studied the new districts, I was happy.
