What is a hobby? It is what you can and like to do, when you have free time. We choose hobby according to our character and taste. When we have a hobby our life becomes more interesting. People do different things for their own enjoyment
We can learn a lot of new things from our hobby. Many people are interested in music. They collect records. I like music very much, my favourite group (singer) is... Other people like to read and collect books. My favourite books are historical novels, detectives and fantastic books. Many people are fond of playing computer games. It is a very popular hobby now.
Some people enjoy making things. It includes drawing, painting, making sculpture, designing costumes, handicrafts.
Many people are fond of sports and games. They go for skiing, skating, table tennis, swimming, volley-ball, football, body-building and so on.
But there is some difference between hobbies for men and women. Men, as a rule are fond of football, fishing, hunting and watching TV. As for women, they are keen on fitness, aerobics and shopping.
My hobby is... I like my hobby very much.
Eating out (Питание вне дома)
Nowadays it is becoming more and more popular to eat out. People go to different restaurants, cafes, pizzerias and bistros. It is very convenient when you have no time and wish to cook. So you can eat out and it won't be very expensive.
There are a lot of different cafes in our city. And you can go to any which is situated not far from your house. Besides, there is a great variety of dishes for all tastes. And you can choose whatever you want. You order a meal and a waiter brings it to you. The service is good and the waiters are very polite. It is becoming more common to tip a waiter for a good service.
There is always a friendly atmosphere, good music and beautiful design.
My Last Visit to the Cinema (Мой последний визит в кино)
I like films very much. My favourite films are detectives, thrillers and comedies. Sometimes I watch films on video, but sometimes I like to go to the cinema. There are many modern cinemas in Krasnoyarsk with Dolby Surround sound. My favourite cinema is KARO. There are four halls in it.
Last time I went to the cinema in summer. I bought tickets in advance. 1 saw a film "WANTED" by T. Bekmambetov. It was a colour action film. Many popular actors played in it, for example A. Jollie and K. Khabenskiy. The film was very exciting and I liked it very much.
Hotels (Отели)
Nowadays there are a lot of different hotels all over the world. And the expression 5-star hotel became very popular. People travel around the world and they usually stay at the hotels.
They choose a hotel according to its location and service. 5 - star hotels are usually situated in the city-centre, they are very expensive and they provide courteous, warm, personal service. They are designed to meet the requirements of any traveler. Rich people always stay at the 5 - star hotels.
People who would like to save money choose 3 or 4 - star hotels. They also provide a good service and the prices are not very high.
Nevertheless all the hotels have comfortable rooms and excellent service staff. Very often there are gift shops, some cafes and restaurants in the hotel. They cook for their guests the most delicious food to any taste. The hotel staff can arrange sightseeing tours, airport transportation and taxi service.
It is becoming more and more common to tip the hotel staff and the maids for a good service.

My flat (Моя квартира)
Let me introduce myself to you, my name is... I would like to say a few words about my flat. i nave got a three-room flat. There are all modern conveniences in my flat. I have got electricity, water, a balcony. My flat is large and sunny. I have got a sitting room, a bedroom, a kitchen, a bathroom, a toilet and a children's room.
My kitchen is very comfortable. There is kitchen furniture, a fridge, an oven, a table and four chairs in my kitchen.
My sitting room is large. There is a table, a sofa, two armchairs, a TV set and a suite of furniture in it.
My bedroom is not large but comfortable. I have a bed, a TV, two bed-side tables in it. The children's room is also nice. There is a bed, furniture and a computer in it. I have many flowers in my flat. I like it very much.
A businessman's working day (Рабочий день бизнесмена)
During the week a businessman gets up at 7 o'clock. In the mornings he does physical exercises, he goes to the bathroom and then has breakfast. At 8.30 he goes to the office. He works in a big company. He has got a large office. He works 5 days a week except Saturday and Sunday.
A businessman is usually very busy. He has got much work to do every day. His office hours begin at 9:00. In the morning he looks through the newspapers and journals. He is interested in the latest political and business events. He usually receives much mail; he looks through the mail, reads cables and telexes and writes letters.
He has got a secretary who helps him. She makes appointments with customers.
At 2 o'clock a businessman has lunch in the restaurant or in the cafe.
After lunch he meets customers and discusses with them terms of contract, prices for different goods, terms of payment, shipment and delivery. Sometimes he discusses business matters on the phone. Very often he goes to different countries to do business with foreign companies.
He leaves the office at about 6 p. m. In the evening he goes to gym or home. He has dinner with his family, reads newspapers or watches TV. He goes to bed at 11 o'clock. In his free time he likes to go running and biking.
A Businessman's Weekend (Выходной бизнесмена)
A businessman is usually very busy during the week. That's why at weekend he would like to have a rest. A businessman gets up at 10 or 11 o'clock and takes a shower. Then he has breakfast. At weekend he can go to the sport gym, to the cinema or somewhere outside the city. He can invite his friends and have a barbecue in his summer house. Very often he devotes his free time to his hobbies: fishing and hunting.
In the evening a businessman can stay with his family, read books, watch TV or discuss family life. It's always pleasure for him to sit near the fireplace and to read sport magazines.
Sometimes rich businessmen fly to other cities or countries during the weekend. For example: to Italy, Turkey or Spain. They enjoy spending their weekends abroad.
All in all, it's up to the businessmen to decide how to spend their weekend.
Talking about holidays (Говоря об отдыхе)
Holidays mean different things to different people. Some people like to have a quiet rest, while other people enjoy active, open-air holidays.
Holidays are popular in all seasons but very many people like spending their holidays in summer.
Some rich people go to foreign countries and resorts during their holidays. But it is very expansive because when you travel abroad you stay at hotels, rest rooms or boarding-houses. The prices for accommodation are high. In some hotels and boarding-houses "bed and breakfast" is included. But in spite of it you will spend much money having a rest abroad.
So, Russian people prefer to spend their holidays on the coast of the Black Sea. There are a lot of hotels, rest-homes and sanatoriums in the South of Russia. They go their by car, by train or by plain.
Nowadays it is becoming more and more popular to go to Siberian lakes. People enjoy camping holidays very much.
And in winter people usually stay in the city; they go skiing and skating. They like winter sports and fresh air.
As for me, I am usually very busy during the year. That's why I would like to have a rest during the holidays. I usually have holidays in summer. On my summer holidays I like to swim, to sunbathe, to cook barbeque, to go to the night clubs (and drink whiskey). It's always a pleasure to have holidays and I wait for them very much.
My office (Мой офис)
Let me introduce myself to you. My name is Ann Brown.
I live in Krasnoyarsk. I am a company manager. I work in a big company (firm). I have got my own office. My office is situated in a new modern building in the centre of the city. It is light, large and comfortable. There are some bookshelves on the walls. There are 3 windows. They make my office sunny. Also, there are three desks, two computers, Jwo. telephones, different pictures, maps, schemes and diagrams on the walls.
There are a lot of modern devices in my office, for example: a fax machine, a copier, a printer, a typewriter. They make the work easier.
I have got many pens, pencils, catalogues and enquiries on my desk. I read a lot of cables, telexes, offers, letters and contracts every day.
I have got a secretary. Her name is Jane. She is a very competent secretary. She always helps me to make the appointments with customers because I am very busy. I meet businessmen and make contracts in the conference room which i» next to my officei. I like my job and my office.
