1) Government

Medjlis concerned about reduction of Crimean Tatar representation in Government of Autonomous Republic of Crimea

During their meeting on 23 June 2010, Mr. Rafat Chubarov, First Deputy Head of the Medjlis of the Crimean Tatars informed Mr. Olav Bertsad, Ambassador of Norway about plans to meet with the President of Ukraine to discuss issues of concern to Crimean Tatars. One of the most important issues, mentioned by Mr. Mustafa Djemilev, Head of the Medjlis is reduction of Crimean Tatar representation in the Government of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea.

2) Events

The case of vandalism of a memorial of the liberators of Drogobych city, Lviv region occurred between 19 and 20 June, 2010. On the wall of the memorial where 128 soldiers were buried, two fascist swastikas were painted with black ink. Lviv Regional Organization of the Veterans of Ukraine, Lviv Antifascist Committee approached Mr. Oleskiy Baganets of the Prosecutor’s office of Lviv city with the request to initiate a criminal case following this incident. http://vgolos. /politic/news/37238.html

Human Rights Protectors require Security Service of Ukraine to ban neo-Nazi festival

Mr. Vadym Kolesnichenko, Member of Parliament, Mr. Arkadiy Monastyrskyi, President of the Jewish Forum of Ukraine and representatives of the Marochkina Human Rights Protection Foundation approached Mr. Valeriy Horoshkovskiy, Head of the Security Service of Ukraine with the request to ban the neo-Nazi festival “Festival of Spirit Tradition” in Kyiv region to be held on 26-27 June 2010.

3) International community

Moldova's draft hate crimes legislation was the focus of an OSCE (Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe) roundtable discussion that took place in Chisinau on 23 June, 2010.

The event was organized by the OSCE Mission to Moldova and the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR), and brought together representatives of Government, parliament and civil society, as well as international experts.

ODIHR presented a legal opinion, reviewing the compatibility of the draft amendments and other provisions related to hate crimes in the Criminal Code with OSCE commitments and other international standards. It also made recommendations on how the country's hate crimes legislation could be brought fully into line with international standards.
