OUR UNIVERSITY
Our University was founded as a Polytechnic Institute by the Russian Emperor
Nickolai II in 1914. The activities of the Institute were broken off by the Civil War and resumed only in 1930.Then there were three Institutes there: Power-Engineering, Mechanical and Chemical. In 1933 they merged into the Middle - Volga Industrial Institute. In December 1992 Samara Polytechnic Institute was transformed into Samara State Technical University. It marked a new stage in the development of one of the oldest and largest educational establishments in Russia.
The University comprises 11 departments. They are the department of Automation and Information Technology, Physical-Technological, Mechanical-Engineering, Heat-Power, Electrical-Engineering, Engineering-Technological, Engineering-Economical, Chemical-Technological and Petroleum-Engineering as well as the Humanities and the department of part-time learning.
The University trains engineers for different branches of industry. It is famous for the high standard of its teaching and research Qualified teachers and prominent scientists are among the teaching staff.
Aboutstudents, including young people from some foreign countries attend
lectures and practical studies every day. The University has 11 academic buildings, a library, some students’ hostels, Health Centre, sports and tourist camps. Students may conduct research work in different labs, equipped with modem instruments. The University library contains books and journals on various subjects both in Russian and in foreign languages. There are also computing facilities and a lot of opportunities for sports and recreation.
The University has a five-year course of study. The academic year begins in September, lasts 10 months and ends in June. There are 2 terms in the course of the academic year. During the terms students have to lectures and practical studies, carry out laboratory test, write their course papers. They have a lot of different subjects such as Physics, Higher Mathematics, Material Science, Descriptive Geometry, Engineering Drawing, Computer Science, Theoretical Mechanics, Thermodynamics and others. At the end of each term they take examinations. If they pass the exams successfully, they have their holidays.
After carrying out their research projects students receive their diplomas and become engineers.
