Прошедшее совершенное время (Past Perfect)

  Прошедшее совершенное время образуется с помощью вспомогательного глагола had (для всех лиц и чисел) и смыслового глагола, поставленного в 3-ю форму. Прошедшее совершённое время употребляется для выражения действия, которое произошло до указанного момента в прошлом, или завершилось до определённого момента в прошлом. Данное время употребляется, если в повествовании возникает необходимость указать какое-либо действие в прошлом, которое совершилось ранее одного или нескольких действий в прошлом. Такое время и действие можно назвать "предпрошедшим".

Yesterday I met John. We had studied together at university.
Вчера я встретил Джона (момент в прошлом). Мы с ним вместе учились в университете (действие до момента в прошлом).

I hadn't seen John for ages until I met him yesterday.
Я не видел Джона много лет, пока не встретил его вчера.

Had you seen John this month before you met him yesterday?
Ты видел Джона в этом месяце до того, как встретил его вчера?


  В русском языке такой специальной формы "предпрошедшего" времени не существует, что компенсируется различными лексическими оборотами, которые помогают передать очерёдность действий в прошлом: до того как, после того как, прежде чем, до того момента как, и т. д. В английском языке прошедшее совершенное время часто вводится:

  1) обстоятельствами времени типа by the end of the year (к концу года), by that time (к тому времени), by Friday (к пятнице):

He had written a book about the Big Bang theory by the end of 1990.
Он написал книгу о теории Большого Взрыва к концу 1990 года.

  2) союзами типа after (после того как), before (прежде чем / до того как), since (с тех пор):

They had already heard about the results of the experiment before they came to the laboratory.
Они уже слышали о результатах эксперимента, до того как они прибыли в лабораторию.

  3) фразами типа It was the first time that... (Это был первый раз, когда...), This was the best something... (Это был лучший..., какой...), He was the only one who... (Он был единственный, кто...):

It was the only time we had seen a total eclipse of the moon.
Это был единственный раз, когда мы увидели полное лунное затмение.


  Прошедшее совершенное время употребляется только в тех случаях, когда указывается или подразумевается момент времени или действие в прошлом, происшедшее после "предпрошедшего" действия. Если такого промежуточного прошедшего действия или момента времени нет, то в предложении употребляется простое прошедшее время. Сравните:

I had lived in China for 2 years before I moved to Europe.
Я прожил в Китае 2 года, прежде чем я переехал в Европу.

I lived in China for 2 years.
Я прожил в Китае 2 года.

When I arrived at the party, my wife had already gone home.
Когда я приехал на вечеринку, моя жена уже уехала домой.

My wife went home late in the evening.
Моя жена уехала домой поздно вечером.

We had not spoken on the telephone for 5 years before we met again.
Мы не разговаривали по телефону 5 лет, до того как встретились снова.

We did not speak on the phone much.
Мы не часто разговаривали по телефону.
