Form 9 Unit 4 CARE ABOUT THE ENVIRONMENT
Тема: Endangered Animals («Тварини у небезпеці»)
Мета: продовжити формувати уявлення учнів про проблеми довкілля, про причини зникнення диких тварин та шляхи вирішення цієї проблеми зокрема; продовжити збагачення словникового запасу учнів з теми «Турбота про довкілля»; забезпечити засвоєння знань про зникаючих тварин шляхом опрацювання тематичного тексту та виконання післятекстових вправ; тренувати учнів у вживанні пасивного стану в реченнях; перевірити навички аудіювання тематичного тексту; розвивати навички усного та писемного мовлення, пам'ять, уяву, пізнавальну активність, вміння працювати самостійно та в групі; виховувати екологічну культуру школярів, дбайливе ставлення до природи, розширити кругозір учнів, формувати повагу до нашої планети і бажання допомогти змінити її на краще.
План уроку:
I. Greeting. Introduction of the theme and the main aims.
T.: At first let me introduce you the motto of our lesson. It’s a quotation of the 14-th American president (1853-1857) Franklin Pierce: “The deer, the horse, the great eagle, these are our brothers. The Earth is our Mother…all things are connected like the blood that unites the family.”
As you see we continue discussing the problems of our environment and today we’ll stop on the theme “Animals in Danger”. You’ll learn new words, get new information about endangered wild animals reading and listening the texts, listening and watching the presentations of your group mates. You’ll also practice your speaking and writing skills (in using of Simple Passive Voice). I hope your attitude to animals and all living creatures of our world will become more careful and attentive. Who knows, maybe you’ll change the future of our planet, you’ll help to find a way to save Earth from a big ecological disaster. So let’s start.
II. Warming up.
1.T.: What main world ecological problems do you already know?
Ps.: - global warming
- water pollution by oil spilling into seas and oceans
- land pollution by garbage
- air pollution by factories smoke and car gasoline
- deforestation
- urbanization (increasing of the world population)
- acid rains
- the ozone hole in layer
- the greenhouse effect
T. You are right and as a result of these problems many plants, insects, fish and animals of course disappear from the face of our world.
2. T.: Let’s brush up the words which we learnt the last lesson. The task is to find the odd word out.

3. T.: Before reading the text let’s revise some new words (NOTE: pupils’ home task was to write down these words into their vocabularies) which you’ll meet in the text. Your task is to match the word with its short definition.

III. The main part of the lesson.
1. Reading.
T.: Every day there are more and more animals and plants which are in danger of becoming extinct. Their habitats are destroyed by people. Forests are cleared for farming and housing. Rivers and oceans are polluted. Animals, birds, fish are hunted for different reasons. The world organization, which is called WWF, (World Wide Fund of Nature –Всесвітній фонд захисту природи (see the text on p.136)) has made a list of endangered species. Let’s know about 4 of them reading the text. (ex.2, p.114-115)
2. After reading tasks.
1) T.: You’ve read and known about four endangered animals, so what are they?
Ps.: The first text is about…. The next one is devoted to…
T.: Shut your books, read the sentence about one of these animals and guess what animal it is. Don’t forget to use phrases “I think/ I guess/ To my mind/ In my opinion/ As far as I know.”
- They are killed for their tusks, which are sold as ivory. (elephants)
- They can be black and white. (pandas)
- They are hunted for their horns which are used in Asian medicine. (rhinoceros)
- They need the large areas for living. (elephants)
- There are 5 different species of them in Africa and Asia. (rhinoceros)
- They live in the warm oceans. (sea turtles)
- It’s the biggest mammal on earth. (an elephant)
- People hunt them for their meat and shells. (sea turtles)
- They can only eat bamboo. (pandas)

- In some countries it’s believed that their horns have magical power. (rhinoceros)
- They live in a small area in the mountains of south-western China. (pandas)

3. Writing.
T.: Now, let’s train to use the new words in Simple Passive Voice. Do you remember how it is formed? (Consult p.201)

- Rhinos are hunted for their horns.
