Hi! My name’ s… I am from the UK. I’ll tell you how British children celebrate the New Year holiday. You see, in Britain the New Year is not as widely celebrated as Christmas. Some people ignore completely and go to bed at usual time. Others, however celebrate in one way or another. The most common type of celebration is a New Year party. This usually begins at about 8 o'clock and goes on until the early hours of the morning. At midnight the radio is turned on, so that everyone can hear the chimes of Big Ben and on the hour a toast is drunk to the New Year. Then the party goes on.

-There is a funny tradition connected with the Hew Year: the First Foot. This is the first visitor to enter a house on New Year's morning. The First Foot must be a man because it is believed that is a woman sets foot in the house, bad luck will follow the family throughout the year.

Traditionaly, the first visitor must carry food, drink and coal into the house. Coal helps to make fire in midwinter and there shall never be lack of food and drink during the comming year.

The first of January is the time for making New Year resolutions. Look! How the British spent January 1-st and what happened one day in the Smalls family.

SCENE

Setting: It's January 1-st The family are having breakfast.

Timothy: We make our New Year resolutions today. What are you goto do, Susan?

Susan: I want to get up early every day and take Rocky a walk before school stars. Have you made any resolutions, Timothy?

Timothy: Yes. I want to get up early, too, because I'm always late for school. I’ll never be late again.

Mr. Small: I can think of a better resolution for you, Tim. Go to the barber's. Your hair's much too Iong.

Timothy: Oh, you're always about my hair.

Mrs. Small: Well, I've made two resolutions. I want to have violin lessons, and I won't eat any more cakes because I'm getting too fat.

Mr. Small: Well, I like cakes! I certainly don't like the violin and I get up early every morning. Can you think of a resolution for me?

Grandma: Yes. Stop smoking that awful pipe.

Mr. Small: But I love my pipe! It helps me to think...Oh, all right then... I'll stop smoking it.

Grandma: You'll laugh at me when I tell you my resolution. I want to learn gymnastics. I've got my first lesson tomorrow.

Timothy, Susan (together): Tomorrow? Gymnastics?

Rocky: Woof, woof!

SCENE II

Selling: Now it's January 2-nd. The family are having breakfast but Grandma is not there.

Mr. Small: Where's Grandma?

Mrs. Small: She is upstairs. She's having her first gymnastics lesson. (Suddenly there is a terrible CRASH! and a BANG! Timothy and Susan run upstairs

Timothy: Grandma, Grandma, what's the matter?

Grandma: Help! I've broken my arm!

Mrs. Small: Quick, we must telephone the doctor.

Susan: On! Dear, poor Grandma! I can't take you for a walk now, Rocky. I must stay with Grandma.

Rocky: Woof, woof!

Timothy: And I shall be late for school again.

Mrs. Small: And I can't have my violin lesson.

Mr. Small: Quick, give me my pipe! What an awful day!

SCENE III

Setting: Now it's January 3-rd. The family are sitting around Grandma's bed.

Mrs. Small: What a pity... We couldn't keep our resolutions for even one day.

Grandma: It's all my fault. I'm sorry. No more gymnastics for me!

Hello, my name is …… I am from the USA. In my country December, 31, New Year's Eve is a time for merriment. At midnight bells ring, horns blow, and friends exchange kisses. Everyone stays up late to celebrate the arrival of another January.

At home or in restaurants, most Americans spend the final hours of the old year and the first hours of the new year drinking and dining with friends.

One of the noisiest and most crowded of New Year's Eve celebrations takes place in New York at Times Square. Thousands of New Yorkers gather there, and millions of Americans across the country join them watching TV.

Ведущий: - Привет! I am a Russian girl. My name is ….

I’ d like to tell you a few words about the traditions of my native land - Russia.

All Russian people celebrate the New Year holiday. It’s one of the most popular celebrations in the year. New Year is a family holiday. It's the time when all the family gets together round the New Year tree decorated with toys and sweets. Little children believe that when they fell asleep Father - Frost will come and bring them New Year presents.

Every family has a holiday supper with traditional bottle of champagne. It's opened at midnight, when New Year comes. All of us listen to President’s speech which is transmitted on TV. Then we have parties with music, dances and games.

THE YULE TREE

1. Deep in the wood a Yule was born
And in the wood grew tall

In summer, winter and the fall

The greenest tree of all.

2. The snowstorm whispered lullabies
and wrapped up all the trees

She sang: "Now close those lovely eyes

And make sure you don't freeze"

3. An angry wolf, his white fangs bared
Beside the Yule tree stops

The little hare is very scared

And round the Yule tree hops

4. At dawn a pony bulls a sleigh
White snow lies all around

And jingling bells ring out so gay

Oh! What a merry sound

5. And old man looks for wood to chop
And put it in his sleigh

The pony gallops clip, clop, clop

And take our Yule away

6. The Yule tree tie our party's come

And on this winter night

It brings much joy to every one

Oh, what a lovely sight!

-  Oh! There is a knock at the door. Who are you?

(Входят «Новый Год и Снегурочка»)

New Year:

I am the little New Year, ho! ho!

Here I come jumping over the snow

Shaking my bells with a merry din

So open your doors and let me in!

Snow Maiden:

Presents we bring for each and all

Big folks, little folks, short and tall

Each one of you a treasure may win

So open your doors and let us in!

New Year:

Some shall have silver

and some shall have gold

Some shall have new clothes

and some shall have old

Some shall have brass

and some shall have tin

So open your doors and let us in!

Snow Maiden:

Some shall have water and some shall have milk.

Some shall have satin and some shall have silk"

But each of you a present may win

So open your doors and let us in!

New Year:

Would you like to take to take part in a contest? You see a beautiful New Year tree decorated with toys. Take the toy and read the task. Good luck to you.

(Учащиеся по очереди снимают с ёлки игрушки, где написаны шуточные задания, читают их вслух и выполняют.)

Snow Maiden:

-  But where is Father Frost? Let's send him an invitation! To send him a telegram we must have telegraphists!

(Учащиеся хором называют буквы алфавита чтобы получился следующий текст телеграммы:)

Father Frost, COME TODAY WE LOVE YOU!

(Стук в дверь. Учащиеся поют.)

Dashing through the snow, in a one horse open sleigh

O’ er the field we go, laughing all the way

Bells on bob-tail ring, making spirits bright

What fun it is to ride and sing a sleighing song tonight!

Jingle bells, Jingle bells, jingle all the way

Oh! What fan it is to ride

in a one-horse open sleigh!

Jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way

Oh! What fan it is to ride

In a one-horse open sleigh!

(Входит Дед Мороз.)

Father Frost:
