Teacher: Dear boys and girls! I am glad to see you at our lesson today because we have an unusual lesson – a competition in travelling. There are two teams at the lesson: The Scots and The Orkneys. They will show us their knowledge of the UK because our lesson is devoted to this country. We’ll speak about the sights, the capitals of the country, some poets and writers and interesting facts. We’ll have several tasks at the lesson which weren’t prepared at home. I hope our competition will be fun. I have lots of red and green stars here. For an excellent answer you will get a red star. For a good answer you’ll get a blue star. At the end of the competition the jury’ll count your stars you’ve received. The winner will be the team with the biggest number of the red stars. The pupils who shows the best knowledge of the UK will be given special prizes. Let’s start our competition and introduce our teams to each other. What’s the name of the this and that teams?

Students: The name of our team is The Scots/ The name of our team is The Orkneys.

The first task is the following: answer the questions about the UK and show on the map. You’ll get a red star for a right answer.

1. Where is the United Kingdom situated? (The UK is situated on the islands.)

2. The UK is an island country. But it has land border. What country does it border on? (It  borders on the Republic of Ireland in the southeast.)

4. How many countries does the UK consist of? (The UK consists of England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.)

5.  What are their capitals? (They are London, Cardiff, Edinburgh and Belfast.)

6. What are the national flowers of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland? (They are a rose, a thistle, a daffodil and a shamrock.)

This is the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. It is situated in the north - west coast of Europe between the Atlantic Ocean on the north and north west and the North Sea on the east. The UK consists of 4 parts. They are: England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. The UK lies on the British Isles. The UK is one of the smallest countries in the world. It is twice smaller than France or Spain. The area of the UK is some 244. 100 square kilometers. The population of Great Britain is over 61 million. Great Britain is not rich in mineral recourses. Coal and oil are the most of them. The UK is one of the most industrialized countries. Agriculture takes also an important sector in the economy of the country. It isn’t too hot in summer or too cold in winter. It often rains in England. The UK is a constitutional monarchy. The Queen Elizabeth the II is officially the head of the state. The formal name of the British national flag is Union Flag, but it is commonly known as the Union Jack.
