Research subject area: Philology and sociology.

Research Aim: Analysis of the necessity of Biblical works of art for

spiritual formation of our contemporary.

Research target:

1. To prove the imperishable spiritual value of Russian classic art through its examples;

2. To study the corresponding reviews in literature and in the Internet and to choose information for research project including data from interview and opinion poll;

3. To develop questions for opinion poll, to hold interviews and to summarize the results.

4. To find materials for making a social-psychological characteristic of the modern society through observation and communication;

5. To summarize all the materials in the research project.

Timeliness: Modern society can be saved from spiritual degradation by Great Art.

Hypothesis: In case nowadays the Legend of Grand Inquisitor has historical and literary interest than it is a necessary component of the inner spiritual world of the 21st century person

Methods:

1. Reading books and articles;

2. Opinion poll and interview to prove or to reject the hypothesis;

3. Observation of people around and their behavior;

4. Talks.

Grounds - The abovementioned methods should help in:

research of literary works and paintings;

search for answer to a key question: «Can these works of art influence spiritual formation of personality in the 21st century?»; creation of realistic characteristic of modern society.

Result:

1. Research project, presentation of research project.

2. Systematization and summarization of the results of observations, talks and

opinion polls.

Conclusions: For majority of modern people questions of spiritual development are not of high propriety. Great Art can help in spiritual renovation of a person, but many people do not really need it.

Introduction

This summer on 7th 2012 I visited the Dostoevsky Days in St. Petersburg. This celebration was held for the third time. The programme began with the traditional for these days flashmob near the monument to the writer on the Bolshaya Moscovskaya Street. Every year the organizes invent a new spectacular flashmob, for example during the first one all the guests were asked to read the episode from the novel “Crime and Punishment” all together aloud. In 2011 St. Petersburg was full with the sounds of the bells - the symbols of communication. This year the visitors have been asked to take hand in hand and raise the hands up in order to support the Dostoevsky`s appeal to brotherhood and love.

After that the noisy procession, headed by the actors, dressed up as Raskolnikov, Marmeladov, Karamasov and other Dostoevsky`s characters, went along the Kusnechny Lane to the museum of Fyodor Dostoevsky, where he himself stepped on the balcony and gave an opening speech. Dostoevsky - in the image of whom performed the actor Sergei Barkovsky - greeted the audience warmly and announced the further programme - the guests were being waited for “Literaturnaya Kadril” with the participation of the main characters of his novels. He also pronounced remarkable words addressing to the youth: “ It doesn`t even matter whether you read my novels or not – I am sure you will do it. You will see my characters and you will feel eager to know what has happened to them and you will open my novels, and I am sure, you will read them after that.”

In fact, after visiting such a wonderful celebration I started discovering the world of Dostoevsky` s works of art for myself. What is more, I was impressed by a lovely sincere interest of the audience, mostly the youth, in what was going on, comparing the Dostoevsky`s characters with contemporary people.

The remarks, looks and expressions of the faces round me - everything was the evidence of how the participants were inspired by the meeting with the Beauty. And it occurred to me : “ Here is the treatment of consumership of modern society! Can the Art bring people back to spirituality?” My answer is Yes!

The more the person appeals to literature and reflects upon it the more the person visits theaters and museums and analyses what has been seen the richer becomes his inner world. In fact visiting the International Dostoevsky Days contributes to my mental development as while working on the project I have plunged into the world of great literary and art works, have compared them with the nowadays reality and have tried to systemize my observations and thoughts. What does it mean – soullessness, and why is it dangerous for modern society?

Soullessness - a real danger of present days. It is expressed in materiality, immorality, commercialism, poor culture. Often in a rush for wealth the man forgets about the greatest human values and ideals.

It is hard to believe that an average citizen will prefer a museum collection or fundamental reading to watching popular films. And even if he chooses reading I doubt whether it will be a piece of literature which needs a great intellectual labour.

What difficulties can be hidden in soullessness? Materially-minded person becomes hard-hearted, cynical, incapable to sympathy and compassion. His own interests becomes of great importance for him. So the lack of human principals develops people`s selfishness. The aggression and cruelty increases. Because of the personal interest people are ready to commit crimes and even to ch people are not ready to sacrifice or perform noble deeds.

The loss of spirituality is the loss the spirit and soul. Rejecting spiritual values people stop being sensitive and stop having a sensation of the world around us. They usually lose the ability to creation and making something new. Consumering becomes the main aspect of life. Materially-minded people cannot love and believe.

And who can?! Dostoevsky was sure that Jesus Christ was. The writer himself went through the long and difficult way to true belief. That`s why so deep are his characters: Sonechka Marmeladova, Myshkin, Alyosha Karamasov and the character from “The Legends of Great Inquisitor”- Jesus Christ.

The genius Russian writer frankly claimed: “I believe in Christ not like a boy. My "Hosanna" has passed through a crucible of doubt."

In the works of Dostoevskiy, the great explorer of human soul, on different sides are examined the questions of spirituality and unspirituality of human. In the depths of human nature Dostoevskiy reveals the God and the Devil, and in this view it is very important to consider “ The legend about the great inquisitor “ from the novel “ he brothers Karamasovs “, where Dostoevskiy raises the most important questions of human life: “ Whether human can give freedom for bread; whether human, sacrificing freedom of choice the property and evil, can submit to the authority of the terrible, who will supply decisions of the humanity, glamor the conscience of humanity?”

In the works of Dostoevskiy all attention is letting to people, he was interested in people, occasionally people with their spiritual temperament, feelings and thoughts, as “human-the hole world, it would be only the primary motivation in a noble”.

The action of “Legend” takes place in Spain, in the 16 century, during the inquisition. Exactly in that time, hearing the pleas of people, Christ came to them. He is appearing quietly and insensibly, but all notice him and follow him, as followed 15 centuries ago. From Jesus proceeds healing force, he resurrects the girl, people surround him, they ask for blessing. And then appears the cardinal-the great inquisitor. “It is ninety-year almost old man, tall and straight, with withered face, with sunken eyes, but in which even glows, like a fiery sparkle, shine”. He frowns and orders to catch the Jesus. And the crowd, surrounding the Christ, resignedly moves aside.

At night the inquisitor comes to the cell to the Son of God and proves him his theory. The inquisitor asks the Jesus, why he came to disturb them, when people just started to listen and think, that they are free.

The main argument of a great inquisitor becomes a story of Christ’s temptations in desert: as known, Christ has casted away a triple temptation of Satan, temptation of bread, temptation of power and temptation of miracle, as he concluded that liberty that liberty cannot exist, if obedience and faith are bought by bread and wonder. Jesus called people to live in Spirit and truth, in bounding liberty and responsibility.

However, by inquisitors opinion “having such responsibility, holding out such liberty, living in such a clear spirit is beyond peoples’ power.

The Great inquisitor makes a conclusion, that we ought to listen to a Great and powerful Spirit and lead people to death, turn them into slaves and not to give them freedom. Liberty, in opinion of inquisitor, is an exhausting weight for a weak human creature, and the first inquisitors’ statement says, that a human and then inquisitor, to make people “happy”, “revives” Christianity, excluding things that go beyond most peoples’ abilities. Freedom he changes into “authority”, Spirit - into “miracle”, truth into “mystery”. Now, people do not need to make a difficul choice, to think painfully and have doubts in searching the truth. All decidions are enjoyments and safety is enough for others to feel themselves happy.

Jesus said: “Net only using bread the man will live”. But inquisitor comes to conclusion that “centuries will pass and mankind will proclaim by Great wisdom and science that there is no crime, so there is no sin, but only starring people. And after that people will come and obey to inquisitor because he will feed them, as no “heaven bread can compete with earth in the eyes of a weak person».

Literally you can say that starving people cannot fully value the gift of freedom. Hunger makes it cheap; the majority of people would exchange their freedom on satiety, forgetting about the Kingdom of Heaven, which could never happen. Is that how it is? Is it possible that someone would deny the main gift – the gift of freedom and is it possible that physical values are more important than spiritual ones?

It is appropriate to say, that a lot of people means a lot of opinions, but if you judge by the results of my research, - than you can see that 80% of respondents said that they would never exchange their freedom on satiety, but at the same time 80% claimed that they could easily lie at school, if their mark depended on it. Of course, by the words, all of us are heroes, proud of their individuality and independence of their decisions. But you should imagine yourself in the cruel situation of choosing between bread and freedom, in this case you should consider “bread” as physical values, as wellbeing, as good salary, as comfort in life. And who has not sacrificed their beliefs not to ruin relationships with your friends, teachers? Who has not exchanged their freedom on opportunity to make one’s life better? It seems that the theory of the Great Inquisitor is right, if you replace bread with a good mark, comfort life or simply survival.

Bread is a temptation, which put a person in inconvenient selection position. And from what the person will choose: to stay oneself or to bend for a crust of bread, it is possible to judge about one’s essence, inner core and the way of his further development. Will to freedom – the most reliable characteristic of the worthy person.

God gave the man the gift of freedom, huge and terrible, because freedom can make a man godlike, may tempt enter into temptation to plunge into the abyss of sin. Dostoevsky, according to free acceptance of that truth, which has to make the person finally free.

This question is a question of freedom of conscience, in my opinion in a “Legend” predominating. The Holy Bible, which has firmly described what is good and what is bad, in the Gospel it is supplemented with the essential principle that did not stick simply to follow Moisey’s law without pure thoughts.

“Do not kill” – might be taken at the level of Spirit instead of behavior and from now on the person most should define differentiation between good and evil. Ancient prophets made wonders, but the Christ demanded great impartial belief, even the love of people to God must be free, but is it simple to believe the person in highest fore, without seeing their manifestation the Inquisitor asked the Christ: “whether the nature of human is created, that reject the miracle and the terrible moments, the moments of the most terrible and painful emotional core issues remain only with the free decision of the heart?” O! You knew the dead is preserved in books, and reach the deep past of the earth, and hoped that, following you, and people will reject miracle, and immediately reject God, for people seeking… And Inquisitor understands this: "As person can not remain without a miracle, then he will make new wonders himself, and will adore voodoo miracle, witchcraft, even if he was a rebel, heretic and infidel." The man is too weak and feeble, to believe in God without miracles.

We, contemporary Christians, often demand wonders. Who can accomplish an exploit of belief – to stay with God and not to wait wonders from him in the most terrible moments of life. God always came in people’s lives, for He helped them to rise from the dead, He cured them. It’s all because of His love and His pity.

And we decided, that it’s a pleasure, that Holy people must always help us, because it’s their main duty – to keep us from illnesses and unpleasantnesses, to help us in terrible moments of our lives and to be executors of our dreams.

But we always forget, for what unpleasentnesses are given to us in our life. The Priest, whose name was Aleksiy Uminskiy once said, “we have them, unpleasentnesses, not to run from them, we have them, because unpleasentnesses help us to understand something special and very important, about eternity of man’s soul. So if we hadn’t had these unpleasentnesses we couldn’t change our minds”.

However, when we arrive to God’s powerful and marvelous places, we think about our simple problems, we need only welfare, so we prove the words of powerful inquisitor: “You promised us bread from the Heavens but I want to tell you again, if this bread can’t be compared with the bread of the Earth in eyes of weak people with sins?

And if tens of thousands will go with You for this bread from Heavens, what will be with whose millions of people, who won’t be available to go?”

Religion – is the result of bringing up good manners, and for a lot of people – it’s like rules of decency, that people should obey. But sometimes it looks natural successive.

Really, there aren’t as many people who believe in religion with all their souls, in any society percent was not big, and Holy people and monks have never been the majority of our society.

So, the fact that there are few of them, is not a reason to panic. So, if there are fewer believers - that the saints are not people, but those who believe in the power of education and habits, that is to change the system of socialization, not faith as such.

Man has no time and no need to think about the eternal, of something intangible, that will happen to him after death, or that there will be nothing, and on his death - all this nonsense to think not for nothing! His thought is always busy, and when it does not take up the work and life, - Electronics intercede their place. And, in addition to this initial damage, television continues to impact on every person in his life, not allowing him to think, and filling his mind anything but my own thoughts.

Taken together, factors such as the weakening of religion, objective changes in the world, to develop science and technology, changes in the education system, and much more, call one pernicious phenomenon - the decline of morals and ethics. And it is in this area by presence spirituality seems irrefutable.

The Savior has a chance, not enslaving people. He believes them, and the Grand Inquisitor claims that people are weaker than thought Christ. Christ is not needed by the people, they need not freedom, but the pastors that feed rod of iron. They feel the burden of freedom, they want a steady hand and solid systems, how to act in the mud otherwise. Authority, miracles and mysteries. But the terrible gift of freedom and the associated responsibility, we, unfortunately, can not always be held with dignity. We sometimes do not know what to do with their own freedom, why make it and what to do. One would like to place the burden of moral choice on something whose mighty shoulders, following the approval of the Grand Inquisitor, that «no worries incessantly and painful for the person as having remained free, quickly find that someone to worship».

Conscience - it is after all one of all manifestations of human life, and, in fact, freedom of conscience, a man who does not have mental health problems do not exist. Was wrong to do, I feel gilt.

You can’t call black-white and white-black, and I don’t need the Criminal Code, not to steal or kill. Understanding of good and evil, one for all and a conscience always lets you know when you have done wrong.

However, if it would have been so, as I say, then there was no crime, and peace would reign on earth. What is the problem of the freedom of conscience, and do it really exist? We can’t say for everyone, because the conscience is so intimate, that about it, no one will know. And no one will tell the truth, that according to his conscience, to sell heroin is normal. Here, you can only speculate. I guess that is still the fundamental concepts of conscience are immutable and are common for everybody, but there are many borderline situations when our conscience is like Buridan donkey between two alternatives, and there self-determination of man's actions comes to force.

When the situation is unsolvable positive, when it have a lot of solutions, the conscience becomes freedom of choice. Precisely, the conscience finds freedom! If this choice hurt someone, this person can give the alarm. From the point of view of science, it is unexplainable. Why people are so scrupulous? Why conscience can "bite"? It or the truth were given by God, or defined by the nature of man as a feeling, realization of the value of his life and it is reflected in the existence of other living creatures, by the way, not only the people.

And by doing evil to others, subconsciously you transfer this evil on yourself, and you feel bad, and you feel yourself regretfully. This is just my suggestion, and it seems to define that is conscience is very difficult.


Well, suppose somebody made wrong decision, and he began to feel bad. According to the logic, we can assume that the next time he wouldn’t do something like this. This example is deposited in your own experience, and the next time in this situation person wouldn’t do something bad. And from where the dishonest people came?


Firstly, regret can be overcome, and the next time "it does not bother" you. Secondly, while the person is young, the concepts of conscience are invested by parents, and if any foundation of morality in man aren’t invested, and in future to overcome with conscience would be easier.

The Freedom of worship in The Grand Inquisitor’s opinion is the greatest evil given to people. They make mistakes doing evil and increasing it. So, might it be better not to suggest people this harmful freedom of worship? I don’t think the man without freedom of worship may be considered the Man. In this case this is only the program of actions, predictable and deprived of emotions and feelings and hereinafter the soul.

So, freedom is given to each person from the birth as well as the night for life and so on. Everybody uses it on his/her own. Some of them become good people, some of them bad ones. Some people sell their freedom and some of them fight for it. One of the questions which was put by The Grand Inquisitor was the question if the Saviour considers that hundred thousands of people who can take the bread of Heaven are more worthy of those millions creeping on the earth.

Those people who haven’t come to awareness of the great truth, who served the God but neglected freedom given to them for the sake of daily bread.

It's no a secret that people are not equal. Some of them goes above while others live their days modest. But it is not only the ambitions and achievements, which one can boast in a reunion evening. And not even the intelligence, strength and beauty. We are talking about a certain Understanding of world’s order and its laws and trends. Understanding that elevates man above the rest of people. Respect is the most important category of human existence, and the question who worth respect, and who is not, also depends on the freedom of conscience.

When I was reading the “Legend” I imagined Jesus as he is in the picture of Kramskoj “Jesus in desert” (1872) – lonely, he is sitting on a stone in the endless desert. His thoughts are deep and painful. Jesus is barefooted, he is sitting with his head down, his clasped hands are skinbound.

His moveless quite figure seems to be integrated with the desert stones. I think that painful thoughts of Jesus symbolize the moral choice of a person.

And what wonderful accord “Legend” ends: “When inquisitor trailed off, he wait a bit time what will captive answer to him. His silence was hard for him. He saw how prisoner always heard him, looking feeling and stilly to his eyes and conspicuously not desiring anything. Fart wanted him to say anything, even if acidy, awful. But he suddenly, mutely approaches to the fart and stilly kisses him in his anemic nonagenarian lips. Here is all answer. Inquisitor let out a prisoner, whom he lately wanted to turn. Although fart stay with old ideas but “kiss burns on his heart.” Deal how you want. He can take all his children. But we don’t. We need to destine people by their actions, which arise from their understanding of liberty and choice like boss of humans being. We can never say, why that or other person sell liberty for bread, may be it is not selling. It’s a bad act to destine other people. I believe that liberty, which people have, is upper giving, which he could put. Liberty-is that, makes person a human. But for rightfully decree your liberty, importantly advert to contemporaneity of great writers and hollands of talented artists. If the world go on the way of developing of Great Hind, baited savior in desert, so maybe it could be easier to live. There will be not so difficult questions.

Conclusion

When I have finished literary and psychological research and carried out sociological survey, I understood that with a new answer I’ve got the more extra questions. Glancing back again to the text of “The Legend”, I felt I understood it that my attitude to it has changed in different way, though I began to feel better the words and the actions of the characters as the masterpiece itself. I have searched the main part of sources on the Internet on the social network festival.1september. ru as I wanted to “risk” to systemize and to revise my attitude to Christ and the great Inquisitor. I have found the perfect table there which I was interested in deeply:

But sketchy of table doesn’t mean the simplicity of interpretations and understandings of the work (because this table is proposed to be used at literature classes). Conversely, clarity, brevity of formulations strengthened my sad feeling, formed during the work. Now I am more dramatically and more frightened to imagine modern life. I am not soothed by the data of modern statistics: more and more Russians come to church, to the Faith.

Of course, we can’t impeach the credibility to the sincerity of their actions, but something interferes me, when I look at the crowds near churches and monasteries, to take it as a great trust to Christ’s teaching.

Modern society has lost almost all moral values ​​(ten Christian commandments, Code of the Builder of Communism, and others) and has not did acquire new. That's why contemporaries cannot distinguish between the concepts of good and evil, truth and falsehood, dignity, honor and dishonor.

The most vulnerable areas of public life are such as mental health, culture, patriotism, spirituality. The loss of man, especially the young, life orientation is often used by various extremists and opposition forces.

And if today problems of everyday culture, spirituality, greed don't seem to be so serious, over time they can become the main problem of our society. It is difficult to determine what the first, the being is or consciousness, everything is equally important and interdependent.

In today's reality we feel the lack of those historical foundations and moral principles on which the life of Russia was based in those times. 

The worst thing is that there is the process of displacement from the consciousness of a new generation of pride of their historical and cultural heritage and the increase of corruption of a rising contamination. 

We are the eyewitnesses of the fact that there are more and more people who wish to rewrite our history. And, as a rule, all this is done with impunity and the help of our ideological opponents. People are not born with an innate morality.

Morality is a product of education, the foundation of a person's identity, the role of its is huge, and that is why it is so important, as early as possible to get acquainted with moral values. The lack of moral education of young generation is one of the greatest evils of our time that must be addressed; otherwise humanity will reach the final destruction of the moral values.

Of course, our distant ancestor sinned, and had a lot of unfair in his life, and he was a strong belief, faith in justice, not fears before the punishment, belief that after death «all things which you do will be rewarded». You must pass Judgment, to appear to the true conscience, to property, to truth, to appear to the Creator who accepted suffering for the sins of people.

Pasternak wrote about it with amazing power:

But in the Book of Life a page has turned, 
More sacred and more precious than all else. 
That which is written must now be accomplished. 
Amen. So let it therefore come to pass. 

"The progress of the ages, like a parable, 
In mid course may suddenly take flame, 
And faced by that dread grandeur, I'm prepared 
To suffer and descend into the grave. 

"And from the grave on the third day I'll rise. 
Then, like a fleet of barges down the stream, 
The centuries will float forth from the night 
And make their way before my judgment seat.

But will the modern man think about his answer on The Day of Judgment. Will this answer be given with the fright of punishment, or will it be sincere penitence according to the results of investigation, the majority of people are more afraid of physical punishment, then mental one, which gives the proof to the materiality and prosaicness of the contemporaries.

In all Dostoyevsky's works penitence always leads to healing and kindness: Jesus Christ came precisely to teach the mankind that its physical nature, its soul could appear in such heavenly shine in reality, in a flesh, not in a dream - it is natural, it is possible.
