The Crested Butte Music Festival (CBMF) presents three concerts in its TIME SPANS new music series with International Contemporary Ensemble’s Meta Trio; Suzanne Farrin's La Dolce Morte with countertenor Anthony Roth Costanzo; and the JACK Quartet in its final concert The Wind in High Places with the current musicians.

A collaboration between the Crested Butte Music Festival and the Earle Brown Music Foundation,

TIME SPANS is created in the spirit of the late American composer Earle Brown (1926-2002). Mr. Brown was a major force in contemporary music and a leading composer of the American avant-garde since the 1950s. His conducting techniques and experiments with “time notation,” improvisation, and open-form compositional structure have become part of contemporary compositional usage. The festival program has been curated by TIME SPANS Artistic Director Thomas Fichter who is also the Executive Director of the Earle Brown Music Foundation.

Brooklyn-based Americana band Yarn rounds out the sixth week of programming.

All “mainstage” performances will take place in the Mt. Crested Butte Mirror Palace.

Returning for their second year, the JACK Quartet includes violinists Christopher Otto and Ari Streisfeld, violist John Pickford Richards, and cellist Kevin McFarland. Devoted to the commissioning and performance of new works, JACK is the recipient of numerous awards for their dynamic programming, championship of contemporary works, and fine musicianship. The program will feature John Luther Adams "The Wind in High Places," and works by Carolina Heredia and Hannah Lash.

The Quartet just announced that two of its founding members will be leaving after their performance at the CBMF. Founding violinist Ari Streisfeld and founding cellist Kevin McFarland will be replaced by violinist Austin Wulliman and cellist Jay Campbell. This first personnel change since the founding of the ensemble in 2007 is historic, and the final performance of the original musicians will take place at the Crested Butte Music Festival. On the heels of its exciting world premiere at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Suzanne Farrin's La Dolce Morte will continue its life at the Crested Butte Music Festival. The New York Times raves of the piece, "Ms. Farrin set the words to music of aching intensity, sung here with vulnerability and yearning by Mr. Costanzo." The composer will be present.

A monodrama for chamber ensemble and countertenor, La Dolce Morte is based on Michelangelo’ love poetry and uses his own words as the libretto. The work features countertenor Anthony Roth Costanzo as the voice of Michelangelo.

More about the Mt. Crested Butte Mirror Palace:

One of only four such structures in the U. S., the Mt. Crested Butte Mirror Palace is a semi-permanent Spiegeltent that will house all of the CBMF mainstage concerts. Flemish for “mirror tents,” Spiegeltents were built around 1900 in Belgium for use as traveling dance halls and town fairs. The Mt. Crested Butte Mirror Palace is nicknamed “Victoria” and was originally built in the 1930s by the Klessens family. The numerous spiegels, or mirrors, in the tent allowed for discreet eye contact between visitors and became a legendary symbol of the wild fin-de-siиcle nightlife. This tent has traveled around the world and most recently spent ten years in South Africa. The Mirror Palace will be coming to America for the first time this summer to CBMF.
