THE IMPORTANCE OF SUMMER READING

Dear Students and Parent(s)/Guardian(s):

Summer reading is very important in developing life-long reading habits, in maintaining literacy skills, and in promoting reading for pleasure. These months give students the opportunity to explore books, both fiction and nonfiction. Reading for pleasure will enhance fluency, comprehension and foster the discovery of new interests. Studies have repeatedly shown that children who continue to read during the summer months perform better when school resumes in the fall.

Therefore, we have compiled a reading list for middle school students entering grades 6, 7, and 8 in September 2016. Attached you will find a suggested book list which contains recommendations FOR STUDENTS BY STUDENTS at I. S. 73, as well as titles suggested by the Summer Reading Committee of the Queens Public Library. This list includes some of the best new books of 2016 as well as other favorite titles and authors, covering a wide range of titles that would appeal to students’ interests and reading levels. This is a wonderful opportunity for students to make appropriate independent reading choices (picking a “just right” book). Please note that this is a suggested reading list, neither comprehensive nor compulsory. Other titles by the various authors listed, as well as other titles that are not on the list, may be selected for students’ reading pleasure! Students entering grades 7 and 8 in September can also participate in the MYON Summer Reading Challenge and have received login information at schools. Myon has over 5,000 fiction and non-fiction electronic books for students to choose from!

Students must complete one bookmark (for either a fiction or nonfiction book) as their first homework assignment for the first marking period of next year. This will also count toward their 25 Book goal for the year. In addition, students may also get a head start on next year’s 25 Book Campaign by creating an additional book mark, and completing one or more of the attached 25 Book Campaign response sheets and bringing them in on the first day of school.

Have a great vacation, read frequently, and visit your library as often as you can. See you in September!
