Jefferson | In Congress, the 4th of July, 1776. A declaration by the Representatives of the United States of America, in General Congress assembled. We, therefore, the Representatives of the United States of America, in General Congress, Assembled, appealing to the Supreme Judge of the World for the Rectitude of our Intentions, do, in the name, and by Authority of the good people of these Colonies, solemnly Publish and Declare, That these United Colonies are, and of Right ought to be, Free and Independent States. |

Washington | A new nation has been born. I congratulate you, dear Mr. Jefferson. |
Jefferson | Thank you, Mr. Washington. But it’s only the beginning. We have to think about state symbols. |
Washington | You are right as usual. And the first thing we should think about is a flag. I have a sketch of it. Look. |
Jefferson | Oh, it’s wonderful! (Считает: 1, 2, 3 …) What do these stripes mean? |
Washington | They mean 13 free states. One stripe for one state. And one star for each state. I like it. But I know nobody who can make it. |
Jefferson | I think that I can help you. In Philadelphia, in 239 Arch Street lives a young housekeeper Betsy Ross by name. She is said to be the finest needlewoman in the city. Let’s ask her to help in making a new flag. |
(идут к Бетси. Она сидит, что-то шьет)
Washington | Dear Miss Ross, only you can help us. Look at this. (Показывает набросок). Can you make a sample American Flag? |
Betsy | Oh, it’s so beautiful! I like it very much! I promise to do my best to make it! |
шьет, отдает флаг Вашингтону. Звучит музыка о флаге There many flags)
Washington | Now we have to choose the bird as our symbol and emblem. I think it must be a turkey. |
Jefferson | A turkey? Why? |
Washington | Because it’s a true native of the country. |
Jefferson | Oh, no, not turkey. It must be an eagle. Since ancient times eagles have been a sign of power. And our country will be great and powerful! |
