American Express donates S$50,000 to Straits Times School Pocket Money Fund

American Express today donated S$50,000 to The Straits Times School Pocket Money Fund (SPMF)

SINGAPORE, May 5, 2015 – American Express today donated S$50,000 to The Straits Times School Pocket Money Fund (SPMF) marking a double celebration of Singapore’s jubilee year and American Express’ 90th anniversary in Singapore. The fund will be used to secure better futures for needy children.

Since January, as part of the company’s anniversary celebrations, American Express pledged 50 cents to SPMF up to a total donation of S$50,000 whenever a Card Member shared their “Member Since” year through Facebook. Non-American Express customers could pledge their support through sharing messages of support on social media using the hashtag (#AMEX90SG).

In addition to presenting the cheque, 20 American Express employees spent the afternoon with 20 students supported by the SPMF at the Hougang Sheng Hong Student Care Centre. American Express employees, including Mr Cheng Heng Chew, Singapore Country Manager, helped each child to decorate a piggy bank to represent their saving goals through their drawings.

“This year is especially significant as we celebrate our 90th year and commitment to Singapore. American Express strongly believes in giving back to our community. We are happy to do our part through this donation and spend time with some of the young beneficiaries of the School Pocket Money Fund,” said Mr Cheng. “In addition, we hope the idea of decorating a piggy bank helps encourage the children to visualize what they are saving for.”

Together with Mr Han Fook Kwang, SPMF Chairman and Ms Tan Bee Heong, SPMF General Manager, Mr Cheng selected the three best decorated piggy banks.

“We are gratified to be the beneficiary of this special 90th anniversary charity project and are thankful that American Express has taken the time to raise awareness of our mission to create a better future for the underprivileged children we help,” said Mr Han.
