At the Theatre

1.         I’ll never forget my first visit to the Belarusian Opera and Ballet Theatre. My friend and I wanted to see the famous ballet Swan Lake by Tchaikovsky. We knew the plot very well. We also knew some pieces of music from this ballet (Small Swans’ Dance) and decided to see the whole performance.

2.         We bought the tickets in advance and came to the theatre half an hour before the show. In the foyer we bought the ch famous dancers as T. Yershova – international Competition Laureate, People’s Artist of the Republic of Belarus (as Zigfrid) were costarring in this ballet. The ballet is about the great love of Prince Zigfrid and a beautiful young girl Odetta by name.

3.         At 7 sharp the performance began. From the very first minute I was deeply impressed by everything I saw on the stage. The setting and the dancing were superb and exciting. The costumes were fine, the music was thrilling. The ballet seemed to me a fairy-tale. I had never seen anything more wonderful before. My friend also enjoyed every minute of it.

4.         After the first act we went to look over the theatre. We saw the boxes, the pit, the dress-circle and the gallery. There were many portraits of famous opera-singers, ballet-dancers, musicians and producers on the walls of the foyer. Among them we could see the portraits of A. Savchenko, R. Petrov, M. Gulegina, etc.

НЕ нашли? Не то? Что вы ищете?

Electronic Worlds Without End

They’re everywhere! In less than two decades interactive electronic entertainment has become a global fact of life.

It’s easy to understand why. Today’s electronic games, whether played on computer, dedicated game console, or coin-operated unit, are more than just diversions. Good ones become gateways to world we might otherwise never visit. The best achieve something like art.

Basically the appeal of interactive electronics is twofold. First, video and computer games draw on our sense of fun, our need for play. This point might be argued by those dedicated gamers – and their parents, spouses, and friends – who spends dozens of hours locked in electronic interplay. Who’s in charge – game or gamer? Interactive addiction, indeed, might well be a subject for investigation.

We are reaching a point where interactive electronics can re-create, to one degree or another, virtually anything.

The best PC games are elegantly programmed, taking advantage of the machine’s power and minimizing its vulnerabilities in order to enhance the electronic illusions being created. Indeed, some games are far more elegantly programmed than the business software for which the PC was primarily intended.

Today even education dances to an increasingly electronic, interactive beat. Educational software is often as entertaining as game software, with the added benefit that you’re improving your mind as you play. Many games, in fact, have serious educational underpinnings, presented with distinct points of view. That’s a brief sketch of today’s worlds of electronic games. Diverse and diverting, the games have spread throughout the world and show no sign of retreating.

And tomorrow?

The skills learned over the first decade of interactive entertainment’s life will serve as the foundation for the next generation of games. Programmers’ toolboxes now contain thousands of routines and shortcuts. Just as film, recorded music, and television have libraries of effects, so will the entertainment software industry continue to add to its collection. Don’t be surprised to see many interactive effects actually mirroring familiar film techniques. Before long, home entertainment systems will let us write, produce, direct and star in our own movies.

My working day

On week-days I usually get up at 7 o’clock. I make my bed, open the window and do my morning exercises. Then I go to the bathroom where I clean my teeth and wash myself. If I have enough time I take a cold and a hot shower. It really wakes me up and makes my body feel well. After bathroom I go back to my room where I dress myself and brush my hair. In 10 minutes I am ready for breakfast. It may be a cup of tea or corn flakes, and very seldom I eat scrambled eggs.

After breakfast I put on my coat, take the bag and go to the University. As I live not far from the University it takes me only five or seven minutes to get there.

I don’t want to be late for the first lesson so I come to the University a few minutes before the bell. I leave my coat in the cloakroom and go upstairs to the classroom.

The lessons begin at eight o’clock in the morning and they are over at half past one in the afternoon. I have six lessons a day with short breaks between them. After classes I go home and have dinner there. I usually have something substantial for dinner, for example, cabbage soup for the first course, hot meat or fish with some vegetables for the second. Then I drink a cup of tea or milk. Sometimes when I have to stay at the University after classes I go to the canteen and have dinner there.

After dinner I have a short rest, read newspapers, make some telephone calls, go to the bakery. I also work at school and it takes me three or even more hours to get ready for my lessons. Sometimes I go to the library to write a report. As a rule I have very little free time on my weekdays. But when I have some spare time I do some work about the house: do the shopping and the cleaning.

Eight o’clock is supper time in our family. We all get together in the kitchen, then go to the sitting-room and watch TV, read books or discuss different problems. Then I go for a walk with my dog. Twice a week I go to the University in the evening to play volleyball. I am a member of the University volleyball team and we have our training rather late.

At about eleven at night I go to bed.
