23rd Country Defendant Day – is devoted to men who defended the country or were in army.
4) Teacher: Christmas-tide, Shrovetide… What are these two festivals?
5) Teacher: Find ex. 3 Read two texts and think of the highlight of Christmas-tide and
Shrovetide. Answer the questions. You have 2 minutes.
TEXT 1
Christmas-tide is the period from January 7 till January 19 (the Epiphany). It was established by the church in honour of the birth and baptism of Jesus Christ. At the period people used to walk, wear fancy costumes, tell fortunes, sing carols. They went from house to house, gave and received gifts and treats. People had a lot of fun.
TEXT 2
Shrovetide is the last Sunday before Lent. It is celebrated as the Farewell-to-winter Festival. On the day people have fun. Eating pancakes is a pagan tradition. It is connected with glorifying the sun: pancakes are oval as the sun. Father Frost and Spring the Beauty are the main characters of the festival. People burn the figure (scarecrow) of the Winter and welcome spring.
QUESTIONS: 1. What period does Christmas-tide last?
2. Is this a religious holiday? Can you prove it?
3. Who was Christmas-tide established by?
4. What did people used to do at this period?
5. What is Shrovetide?
6. Who are the main characters of the festival?
7. What is the highlight of Shrovetide?
8. Do Russians still celebrate these festivals?
6) SLIDE 3
Teacher: Let’s do ex. 4 in your papers. Look at the screen and suggest what foreign
tourists can do on Russian winter festivals. Make up your sentences according
to the modal.
TOURISTS CAN have a carnival, tell fortunes, swim in the ice-hole, build a town-
let, eat pancakes, etc.
Teacher: Do you enjoy these days? What can you do?
7) Teacher: We can’t imagine Russian holidays without giving and receiving gifts.
Work in pairs. Ex. 5 Read the dialogues. Do you think people are happy giving and
receiving presents? Are there any special rules for this?
- Happy New Year, Kate! I think you like this stuffed tiger.
- It’s lovely. Thank you very much. You couldn’t find a better gift.
- Any time. It was my pleasure.
- Egor, my best wishes for Country Defendant Day! Here is a special gift for you.
- Oh, thanks a lot. It’s just I have been looking for but couldn’t find.
- Don’t mention it. I was happy to do it.
- A Merry Christmas for you, Dasha! I hope you like this perfume.
- How did you guess that I wanted this very thing!
- You are welcome.
Teacher: What are the rules for giving presents?
Make up your own dialogues changing the underlined words.
Now congratulate your classmates with any holiday you like.
By the way, what is the general rule for giving gifts?
Do you follow it?
General rule: when people receive gifts, they open the box in your presence, thank you
and express their admiration even if they don’t like it.
8) Teacher: Russian winter! These words to a Russian are like a call to fun. The Russian
winter is full of poetry and magic. And what Russian doesn’t like a fast ride
in a troika or sleigh with three horses!
Now let’s see how you remember Russian winter festivals.
You know for holidays people often present flowers.
Look at the blackboard. There is a nice flower with 8 petals. Inside each
there is a name of a Russian winter holiday. Pick the petal and say some
words about the holiday written on it.
We celebrate … on the …
9) Teacher: As you remember, our guests invited you to Great Britain.
There are behaviour rules that are good for many countries.
Look through the statements in Ex. 7
1. Don’t stare at people
2. Don’t jump the queue.
3. Make way for a girl or older people.
4. Keep a distance talking to people.
5. Give up your place in favour of older people.
6. Queue in line waiting for service.
7. Don’t take off your shoes when you enter a house.
What rules are typical for Russians? (I think, to my mind, I guess …)
Teacher: Find a poster in class and give a tip to a foreigner how to behave at a
Russian home. (Take off your shoes when you enter the house).
10) GROUP WORK, Ex. 8
Teacher: Singing songs is an old Russian tradition.
Songs about winter are very popular. Your foreign guests would be
happy to learn what these two songs are about.
Very shortly give the main ideas of the songs.
Teacher - to the guests: Do you like the songs?
Do you want to come to Russia and enjoy winter?
You are welcome!
11) Homework: 1. Do the crossword to read a general rule for foreigners, ex.1, p.18
Activity book, М. «Просвещение», 2009 (новое издание).
