§ 1. Watch carefully when the latest McDougall pastry advertisement pops up on television later this autumn. You will see a modest kitchen decorated with a forest of potted plants, a brace of actors, and the product. What you will not see is the small army of sound, lighting and make-up experts who spent Thursday tramping through the well-kept north London home of Rosemary and John Cutting.
§ 2. For the Cuttings are part of a select band of home owners who allow their property to be rented out to film production companies for location work, an unusual, pleasurable, and sometimes profitable way to make extra use of your home.
§ 3. Home owners such as the Cuttings who surrender their privacy between 8:30 in the morning and 6:00 at night (film makers work to a strict union-agreed timetable) are, of course, well rewarded.
§ 4. The going rate for a day's location work is about £200, rising to £400 to £500 for the larger homes used in long-running television 25 serials. This must be set against the £3,000 a day it could cost the company to use a studio and the trouble of re-creating Mr. and Mrs. Average's kitchen on the set.
§ 5. The £200 'disturbance' money is welcome but need not be the main motive why the owners let their houses out. It certainly is not in the case of the Cuttings. Rosemary Cutting explains, 'We were first approached through friends to allow the house to be used as a location for a comedy feature film. We agreed because we were curious to see what would happen, though I had some trepidation about what damage might be caused.
§ 6. The worry was unfounded. The film company arranges the extra insurance, makes good any accidental damage and, most important, is prepared to add on a payment for their use of your telephone and electricity.'
§ 7. 'Some fifty people turned up for the first film,' Mrs. Cutting added. 'There was an army, complete with a convoy of trucks, outside my front door early in the morning. I am still amazed we managed to get them all into the house.'
§ 8. The main benefits, according to Mrs. Cutting, are more social than financial. Though she and her financier husband have a busy social life, there is still the enjoyment of meeting different people in what could be considered an exotic industry.
§ 9. She is sometimes taken out to lunch and they receive preview tickets for the film they have 'helped' to make. There is also the undeniable pleasure of recognizing her own home on the cinema screen or television set.
The Times, October 14, 20___
A42. Why is the reader invited to watch carefully when the McDougall pastry advertisement is shown (§ 1)?
1 It was filmed in the Cuttings home.
2 It will be a very unusual commercial.
3 It will show a completely new product.
4 It will show the Cuttings in their own kitchen.
A43 Why did the film company ask the Cuttings if they could use their kitchen?
1 It is a model kitchen, expensively decorated.
2 It is a very big kitchen, where a great many people can work at the same time.
3 The Cuttings had allowed film companies to use their house before.
4 The Cuttings approached the film company and suggested the use of their kitchen.
A44 In what way do home owners such as the Cuttings surrender their privacy (§ 3)?
1 They cannot refuse to let their houses out to film companies.
2 They cannot stay at home at certain times.
3 They have to put up with a lot of strangers in their home.
4 They will become well-known all over the country.
A45 What does the writer want to make clear in the second sentence of (§ 4)?
1 Film companies have good reason to use private homes sometimes.
2 Filming in a studio is very expensive, but always to be preferred to filming in a private home.
3 For the McDougall advertisement the Averages' kitchen would have been much more suitable than that of the Cuttings.
4 It is silly to use a studio for a film that will only take one day's shooting.
A46 The worry mentioned in § 6 was Mrs. Cutting's fear that...
1 she might not be able to get all the film people into her house.
2 the film company would not pay its part of the telephone and electricity bills.
3 the film company would not see to the extra insurance that was needed.
4 their property might be harmed by the film people.
A47 Why did Mrs. Cutting say: 'There was an army' (§ 7)?
1 She had been told that only a few people would come to her house.
2 She had not been told that a war movie was going to be filmed.
3 She had not realized that lots of people are needed to make a film.
4 She was surprised that everything had been organized very well.
A48 Why was the word 'helped' (§ 9) put between inverted commas?
1 It indicates that the opposite of 'helped' is meant.
2 It is meant to make fun of the Cuttings' contribution to the film.
3 It is something the film makers have said.
4 It makes clear that the Cuttings have not really done anything.
A49 From this article it can be concluded that the main reason for the Cuttings to rent out their home to film companies was...
1 the thought of the financial rewards involved.
2 the thought of the free extras like luncheons and preview tickets.
3 the idea they might have new experiences.
4 the wish to please friends by whom they were approached.

A58 The £200 'disturbance' money is welcome but need not be the main motive why the owners let their houses out. (§ 5)
A59 Though she and her financier husband have a busy social life, there is still the enjoyment of meeting different people in what could be considered an exotic industry. (§ 8)

Imagine a computer more powerful than the human brain that can programme itself and even think for itself. Exciting? Terrifying? Whatever your reaction to this prospect, you may have little choice about the outcome. The new generation of computers is on its way and most experts believe that by the year 2020 the current models will have been replaced by living computers.
Scientists have had considerable success with this latest technological breakthrough. Believe it or not, the work started with leeches, small worm-like creatures, whose nerve cells were used in experiments. These nerve cells, or neurons as they are known, perform the same function as human neurons. They are the basic thinking blocks that our brains use to solve problems. In the living computer, researchers connect the neurons to a computer and then link the cells together. The result is a computer that will be able to think for itself.
The future uses of this technology are endless. For example, scientists will have the ability to help blind people to see and deaf people to hear again, by connecting bionic ears and eyes to their brains. It could also mean the end of problems with government departments, no more mix-ups with your documents because of human error. With computers that think for themselves, your file will be ready at the push of a button.
However, many people are afraid of such technology. They wonder if they will lose their jobs to the new generation of computers. They fear that a situation like the film Matrix could develop, in which computers control our minds and our world.
It seems that we are rapidly heading for a ‘brave new world’. By the time the next generation of children has grown up, our lives and our world will have changed in ways beyond our imagination. Nonetheless, the future is still in human hands. It is up to us how we use this new technology. We must make sure that living computers work for the benefit of humankind and do not result in a threat to our very existence.
A60 What does the writer think will have happened by the year 2020?
1 There will be no more computers.
2 There will be a new kind of computer.
3 People will have powerful brains.
A61 What does "they" in line 7 refer to?
1 people's brains
2 scientists
3 nerve cells
A62 What are neurons?
1 nerve cells
2 leeches
3 blocks
A63 How did scientists make the first form of the living computer?
1 They used neurons from leeches.
2 They used neurons from worms.
3 They used the human brain.
A64 How does the writer think that this technology will help deaf and blind people?
1 linking their cells together
2 by giving them bionic ears and eyes
3 by turning them into bionic people
A65 What does the writer think about the future?
1 computers already control it
2 scientists control it
3 it's in our hands
