на тему: Языковые средства интертекстуальности в английской художественной прозе
Key words: text; discourse; language; culture; intertextuality; English fiction; allusion
Structurally, the research paper includes an Introduction, two chapters, Conclusions and a reference list (Bibliography).
The subject of the research is the means of intertextuality in English fiction. intertextuality is complicated linguistic and cultural phenomenon which provides interrelation of language and culture in discourse. Moreover, assuming that actual word meanings result from their interaction with social contexts (Mikhail Bakhtin), intertextuality is a means of forming discourse proper. The aim of the study is to contribute to understanding of the workings of intertextuality in English literary discourse and thus look into the English culture.
The research is done on the material of one of the major novels of the 20th century The Forsyte Saga by John Galsworthy, a Nobel Prize winner. The study looks into the way intertextual devices employed by the author (allusions, quotations, reminiscences, cultural references etc) help to unfold the plot of the novel, provide a broader view of the epoch depicted (Victorian England), and also contribute to the portrayal of the personages. The main focus is on the life of the upper middle class family.
The study of intertextual devices relies on definitional, contextual and etymological analyses of the selected lexical material (proper names, idioms and other culture-related lexis).
The research provides the following conclusions. In his novel, John Galsworthy makes use of various means of intertextuality to create a broad cultural context of Victorian England. The predominant device employed appears to be allusion, which imbues the text of the novel with cultural information. Allusion, as well as other means of intertextuality, creates a perspective which makes the characters of the novel, their speech and actions, more meaningful for the reader. Against the cultural background provided, the values, principles and morals of middle-class Victorians, with their emphasis on possession, stand out quite clearly.
