T-r: Please, repeat after me
Come to dinner,

T-r: It was very good! You hadn’t the home task, because last time you presented your project “My favourite subject”, am I right, Nina?
P-l 4: You are quite right!
T-r: So let’s start a new lesson under the title “Are you glad to be back at school”. Tell me please how the title should be translated?
T-r: Both variants are absolutely right. Before doing focus on listening let’s answer some questions.
T - r: Are you glad to be back at school? Why?
P-l1: Of course, I’m glad to be back. I’ll see my friends every day!
P-l2: Oh, no! I’m not! I’ll have to do my home work again! It’s boring!
T-r: O. K. Thank you for your true answers. Now I’ll ask you another question. Do you have any favorite subjects at school? What are they?

P-l 2: As for me, I prefer Literature and Art.
T-r: Very good. Sasha, tell us, please, do you have any favorite subjects at school?
P-l 3: Yes, I have. I like our English lessons very much.
T-r: Really? I’ll try to believe you! Well, guys.
T-r: In September British people go back to school after the summer break. Mandy, Robert and John answer the question are they glad to be back to school.
Now listen to the dialogue and answer the question ‘Are you glad to be back at school’? What do Mandy, Robert and John say?
ARE YOU GLAD TO BE BACK TO SCHOLL?
John: I`m looking forward to school. I`ll have my favourite subject, science.
Mandy: Of course, I`m glad to be back. I`ll see my friends every day.
Robert: Oh, no! I`m not! I`ll have to do my homework again! It`s boring!
T-r: You have heard the dialogue and now answer the question according to the example written by me on the blackboard.
Example: John
Mandy says that ………….
Robert
P-l 1: John says that he is not glad to be back to school.
T-r: That’s right. Anya, go on.
P-l 2: Mandy says that she is glad to be back to school.
T-r: Right you are. Tanya, the last sentence is for you.
P-l 3: Robert says that he is looking forward to school.
T-r: That’s right.
E. g. John.: ‘I am looking forward to school.’
John says that he is looking forward to school.
T-r: O. k. Open your books on page 11 and let’s do exercise 2.Vitalik, read the task, please.
P: These pupils are also sharing their feelings about the first day at school. What are their feelings like? What do they say? Finish up their thoughts.
Sarah: We`ve had a long summer break. I`m quiet glad….. | that I won`t have friends there.
Tom: We`ve just moved, and I`m starting a new school. I`m worried…… | that the holidays are over.
Juliet: Last term two girls teased me for no reason. I`m a bit nervous….. | that she`ll teach us this year.
David: It`s tough for me to go back to school. I`m a bit nervous….. | that school is in and we`ll start learning new things.
Bryan: There are a lot of clubs at our school. Chess, swimming, wood-work, music…You name it and we`ve dot it! I`m happy... | that they may bully me again.
Susan: I`m looking forward to seeing our form teacher. She`s nice and kind and never unfair. I`m glad…. | that I`ll be goalkeeper in our second eleven. |
T-r:Nina, start reading the first sentence.
P-l3: We’ve had a long summer break. I’m quite glad that the holidays are over.
T-r: That’s right. Tanya, go on, please.
P: We’ve just moved, and I’m staring a new school. I’m worried that I won’t have friends there.
T-r: Right you are. Nelly, go on.
P: Last term two girls teased me for no reason. I’m a bit nervous that they may bully me again.
Anya, read your sentence, please.
P: I like school very much
P: Anya says that she likes school very much
T: Sasha. Read your sentence.
P-2: For me, going back to school means big worries.
P: Sasha says that for her going back to school means big worries.
T: Well done. Thank you! Any questions?
P-ls: No. All is clear.
T-r: Very well.
Mystery of the Girl in a Blue Dress»
T-r: Now we are going to do focus on listening. But first of all look at the blackboard and read words and word combinations and their translations which you see:
Headlight- фара(автомобиля);
Hitchhike-путешествовать бесплатно на попутных машинах, автостопом;
Astonished- поражен;
Dank - влажный; сырой; мокрый;
In vain –
T: Now say me please - have you ever had an unusual situation in your life?
Сh: Yes. Of course.
T: But. Have you ever had a situation when you saw a person (a man, a woman, a boy or a girl), you talked to him and after a while you couldn`t see him and couldn`t talk to him, because he or she disappeared?
Ch:……
T: How can we call this happening?
P: Mystery
T: Yes, it`s mystery. We can`t explain it.
So you see the titles at the blackboard. Let`s read them.
TITLES:
1)A girl in a mystic situation
2)Mystic road accident
3)Dank weather
4)Mystery of the girl in a blue dress
5)Mystic John Hanson
So listen to the text attentively and choose one right and correct title for the future story. But before it look at your cards You should decide whether each of them False or True. If it is false put “F” and if it is true put “T” in front of the sentence.
Sasha, please, read the sentences which are given in your card.
P:
Say if the sentence is true or false:
1. John Hanson lived in London
2. It was raining hard when he was driving home
3. A little girl stopped his car and asked him for a lift
4. The girl was wearing a blue dress though the weather was windy and dank
5. She was about eighteen
6. John asked her if she was cold
7. John took her home and helped her out of the car
8. The girl disappeared
9. John talked to a woman who lived in the house and asked her about the girl he was looking for
10. The woman answered the girl was her daughter
T: Be ready to prepare the answer.
Mystery of the Girl in a Blue Dress
John Hanson was driving home from London after hard working day. It was rainy, windy and misty autumn night. He was approaching the place and dreaming of a cup of hot tea and a bath, when suddenly a little girl showed up in his headlights. She stood by the roadside but didn`t seem to hitchhike.
John stopped and rolled down his window. She was about twelve or thirteen, quite pretty. A round face, big eyes, straight brown hair. But John was astonished- she was wearing only thin blue dress, though the weather was stormy and dank. John said nothing but just opened the door. The girl climbed into the back seat and said quietly: «My name is Mary. Please take me home». Her voice was so quiet that John could hardly hear it. Her face was dead pale and John thought that she must have been frightened to stay there on the road, all alone.
He drove her the way she told him to go. But when he opened the door to help her out of the car, he couldn`t believe his eyes: nobody was in the back seat. John looked all around the car, but all in vain. The girl disappeared.
He wanted to find an explanation to this strange fact and went to the house he had stopped at. A woman about fifty opened the door.
«Excuse me», John said. «But there must be some mystery. I`m looking for a girl aged about thirteen. A round face, dark brown hair, big eyes».
The woman smiled and brushed away a tear.
«Yes…Of course…It was really kind of you to have a trouble…But thirteen years ago our darling Mary lost her life in an accident…And we still miss her so much...I`m sorry…You are the thirteen person who has been there to bring her home.»
T: So what is the idea of this text? What is the correct title? What do you think?
P: Mystery of the girl in a blue dress
T: Perfect. Now show me your cards. Ann, please, read your answers for everybody to check.
P.: The 1st sentence is False, the 2nd is True, the 3rd is also True; 4th – True; 5th – False…
T.: Absolutely right, thank you.
Who`s Better at Math-Girls or Boys?”.
T.: Now open your Reader books at p. 14. Here we have a text Who`s Better at Math-Girls or Boys?
In different countries scientists (ученые) make researches (исследования) about children's skills.
1) Read the title of the article. What do you think the results of the research are? (making suppositions)
Who's Better at Math – Girls or Boys?
By Jack Myers
Several years ago, two mathematicians reported the results of tests that they gave to 10,000 seventh – and eight – grade students. In tests of using words, girls and boys were almost alike. In the math tests the boys did better. For seven years boys had always scored higher in math. There were lots of arguments about it. No one argued about the results – only about what they mean. Do they mean that there is something in boys that makes them better at math? Or do they mean that more boys have learned something that makes them better at math? Up to seventh grade most girls and boys take the same subjects in school. But there may be other ways that boys learn more about math.
2) Stop reading. What do you think the other ways in which boys can learn more about math are?
3) Continue reading. Be ready to answer the question: Why do boys show such results?
Do dads more often help boys with their homework in math? Are boys more often encouraged (поощряются) to become engineers?
Most people are not sure what the results mean. Will those who do best in math in the seventh grade become the best mathematicians or engineers when they grow up? So I think the arguments will continue. But I think it was a good idea to compare girls and boys. It has made us think about how you decide what you want to do when you grow up.
I can even offer some advice. If you're a girl, there isn't any job you can't do just because you're a girl. If you're a boy, there isn't any job that will be for men only by the time (к тому времени) you grow up. So I guess you all had better try your hardest at whatever you do.
T: Well. What is the main idea of this text? Choose one of the given:
- Boys are better at math because they are different from girls.
- A person may be better at tests at school, but another person may achieve better results when he or she grow.
- Some results of tests do not mean anything.
P: the second variant is correct.
T: Right you are. Now find facts in the story to prove your main idea sentence.
Ch…….
T. Very good. Now here are some summaries written by pupils. Decide which summary is the best and give your arguments:
A) The article shows that sometimes it is difficult to understand what the results of some tests mean.
B) This article shows that it is necessary to compare girls and boys. Boys may show better results in math tests at school, but it doesn`t mean they become the best professionals in the future. It depends on the hard work of the person.
C) The article describes the results of boys and girls in math tests and explain why it is so. Boys have more abilities and girls don`t have them.
P: I think B) is correct. The last paragraph says us about it.
T: Absolutely right, Nina.
T: Pupils, open your books at p. 85. Here there is a text called «School years». Listen to the text to get some information about a pupil who tells about his school. What points does he describe? What does he say about his school?
School years Some people think that school years are the happiest in their life. As for me, I cannot say whether it is right or wrong. I am still too young. I am 14 years old, and it is difficult for me to say whether my future will be more happy than my past. Moreover, school takes so much time that I hardly have time for anything else. I have classes in the first half of the day and in the evening I have to do my homework, which takes me several hours. Autumn and spring holidays are very short. In winter I have only two weeks free of mmer is the only time when I can forget about school. But it is impossible to do so. Little by little I start to understand that school plays a very important part in the life of every person, and knowledge gained at school is the key to the future success or failure.
School years may certainly be fairly happy. However, there are a lot of problems even today connected with school life and the formation of a personality. People think differently about this time of their life experience. School is the place where almost everything happens with a person for the first time. School years are the time of great expectations and great emotions. School is the first true experience of the real life. At school a person makes his first friends, meets his first love, confronts the first betrayal. Here at school the person acquires basic knowledge of physics, mathematics, literature, history, biology, etc. But here at school the person not only accumulates knowledge, school helps the pupils to get on in life and become successful.
In a way it is a kind of society in miniature. School society is a model of real society with its advantages and disadvantages. It brings together children with different interests and experience. School offers pupils the opportunities to develop their abilities, satisfy their curiosity, and realise themselves as individuals. At school pupils are taught to be responsible, gallant, and honest. Here at school pupils can compare themselves with each other in terms of academic ability and athletic achievements. Teachers are knowledgeable in their subjects. School provides high-quality conditions that will enable pupils and teachers to make the most of their time. Knowledge acquired at school enables pupils either to continue their education or start working. But school takes so much time that I hardly have time for anything else.
Now I want to say some words about my school. My school is located in the centre of our city. The classrooms are very large. Most of all I like the English classroom. On the wall of the English classroom there are posters with London places of interest. There are some portraits of the British and American writers. Our English teacher teaches us not only the language of the Englishmen but their culture, history and traditions as well. During our English classes we read and translate texts, discuss some English books, and listen to the tape-recorder.
I spend much time at school. But at school we do not only study. We have some extracurricular activities as well. They are part of school life. Our social and cultural life is well organised. We have different clubs. We often go to the museums and theatres. At school I have many interesting subjects and they are all different. I like to discuss interesting problems in English during our English classes. Everything that is connected with Great Britain is very important to me. I like my classmates, and we always spend our time together. I am sure that eventually they will be ready to enter our society as full-fledged citizens.
T: Well. What points does this pupil describe?
P: School years. He says that school plays a very important part in the life of every person
T: What else? What does he say about his school?
P: He says that school is the place where almost everything happens with a person for the first time.
T: OK. What other points does he describe?
P1: Advantages and disadvantages. It brings together children with different interests and experience. But school takes so much time that he hardly has time for anything else.
P2: He also describes his school building and extracurricular activities.
T: Very good. You are absolutely right. So we could point out the structure of this text. It consists of 5 points and conclusion. We also could point out the word combinations and phrases whiсh could help you in your speech. Let`s read them

P1)- School years. What problems are connected with school life?
- One of the problems of school life is connected with communication. There are about 30 boys and girls in a class, and they have to live and learn together for more than a decade. Every person has his own interests and attitudes to everything. It is very important for classmates to become friends. Sometimes some of them become real friends for the rest of their lives.
Moreover I work very hard. I never miss classes and I always do my homework. Sometimes it really takes several hours to do it, but I do not complain. I am really interested in what I learn at school. Moreover, I understand perfectly well that in the nearest future this knowledge will help me a lot.
P2)- School is the place where…
- There are 28 boys and girls in our class. We are all good friends. Nevertheless, I have a few good friends. There are six of us in our company. We usually spend our free time together. We meet after classes, and go to the museums and cinemas. We have a very good time together, especially at the weekends.
P3)- What are the advantages and disadvantages of school years?
-School society is a model of real society with its advantages and disadvantages. School offers pupils the opportunities to develop their abilities, satisfy their curiosity, and realise themselves as individuals. But school takes so much time that I hardly have time for anything else. I have classes in the first half of the day and in the evening I have to do my homework, which takes me 6 hours.
P4)- What can you say about your school building?
- Our school is a modern building. It is located in the center of our city. The classrooms are very large. The first is a Biology classroom with a lot of flowers and two exotic taking care of the flowers and trees we learn to love and protect nature. The second is the Literature classroom. The third is the History classroom. There are maps. Most of all I like the English classroom. On the wall of the English classroom there are posters with London places of interest: Westminster Abbey, Houses of Parliament, and the Tower of London.
P5)- School is not only the place for study, but also…?
- I spend much time at school. But at school we do not only study. We have some extracurricular activities as well. They are part of school life. My favourite subjects are English, English literature. Usually we express our views about the books we read, computer games we play or films we have seen or want to see. We discuss our plans for the weekends and decide how to spend our free time.
We often go to the museums and theatres.
T: Very good. Well. Some people when they grow older do not like to speak about their school years. School years are connected with hard mental activity. That is why some people don't like to speak about them. For self-assured people the recollection of their school years can be very pleasant. All unpleasant moments of their school life they present with humour. And this is the key to their success.
This very attitude has been worked out at school and by school.
T: Thanks to everybody. Some minutes left. Let`s write down your hometask.
T-r: For the next lesson you have to make the following task:
You should read the text on page 12, translate it and do all the exercises. The exercise 3 should be done in writing. Moreover you should learn by heart the poem on page 13.
Thank you for your work, guys. Don’t forget to clean the blackboard and air the classroom! You may be free. Good buy!
P-s: Good buy!
