1.  INTRODUCTION.

Hello, dear students! I’m glad to see you. Let’s start our the way, it deals with a famous person.

To guess the topic of the lesson, you have to look at the blackboard and read the following words:

knights, enemy, ice, lake, battle, prince, defeat, brave

Absolutely true! The topic of the lesson today is Alexander Nevsky.

(video-fragment)

You know, tomorrow we’re going on an exursion to Alexander Nevsky monument. Therefore, we have to learn more about this outstanding personality.

2.  WORK WITH THE POEM.

a)  Lots of poems about Alexander Nevsky have been composed since that great historic event. Here is one of them, written by Tatyana Ryzhova. Unluckily, the lines have been mixed. Let’s try to restore the poem. Look at the lines and put them into logical order.

НЕ нашли? Не то? Что вы ищете?

In people’s hearts, in legends and old frescoes

The memory for hundred years is kept,

Of how famous Alexander Nevsky

Crashed enemies so hard that ice got cracked!

And here again, with warriors all honoured

He stands near Pskov – its guard on horse-back set.

Like this he stood on the Vorony stone,

Like then, triumphantly, he faces west!

(расставляют строчки в правильном порядке)

Now could you read the poem aloud? (ученик читает вслух) Well done!

b)  By the way, you’ve come across a few new words while reading the poem. Could you explain their meaning? Follow my example, please:

Honoured means ‘respected, admired’;

Guard means ‘a group of soldiers who protect something or somebody’;

Triumphantly means ‘with joy because of one’s victory or success’.

legend, fresco, to crash, to crack, warrier

(учащиеся объясняют лексику)

Excellent!
