T. Thank you. It is time to have a role-play “The World of Professions”. You were united into 3 groups and had homework to advertise professions of an English teacher, tourist guide and businessman. In every group there will be a professional worker, a psychologist, an advertising manager, a director and applicants for a job. Each group's aim is to discuss these professions.

T. There are cards with detailed instructions what to do on your tables. Look them through.

Ø  Professional workers will tell about their jobs using given vocabulary.

Ø  Psychologists will choose features of character suitable to people of these professions.

Ø  Employees will interview the applicants and give them application forms to fill in.

Ø  Advertising managers will present their advertisements.

Ø  The applicants will tell us about their decisions.

I will be a journalist and make a report to our school radio news programme about the importance of learning English.

At the end of the game we will answer the question: Is English useful to every educated person?

The role-play begins. Remember about the Rules of the game:

1.  To speak on the topics using given words and phrases.

2.  To discuss advantages and disadvantages of the professions.

3.  To characterize a personality.

4.  To fill in an application form.

5.  To advertise the professions.

6.  To make up the summarizing of the situation.

7.  To listen to each other carefully, not to interrupt each other.

T. So, people who are engaged in business, tourism and schooling have come to our studio. First of all, let’s listen to the professionals.

I am a businesswoman. I study economic processes both in Crimea and other countries. I understand the reasons of economic problems; discover the ways of their solving. I need knowledge of English to study the experience of foreign developed countries. Knowledge of foreign language opens a new world for me. I know English so I can communicate with my partners abroad and make deals with whem. I can also speak to foreigners and it is a way to better understanding other people’s nature, culture and needs.

I am an English teacher. Teaching is a noble profession. In modern times all kinds of specialists need foreign languages in their work – teachers, doctors, engineers and people in many other professions. If a specialist doesn’t know a foreign language he can’t use necessary information which he/she needs in his/her work. I teach my pupils to learn more and more vocabulary and use it while speaking on different topics, to read English books in the original, so they won’t depend on translations.

Tourist guide. As for me, I always wanted to work with people and see the world. I like foreign languages and my dream to work abroad came true after graduating from Tourism faculty. There I have learnt two foreign languages. Tourism became a very profitable business because people are ready to spend their money for the great opportunity to have a good time learning about new countries, going sightseeing, resting and enjoying themselves.

T. Journalist. Well, it’s very exciting to know much information about the professions, but let’s listen to the psychologists’ points of view.

Т. The characteristics which you have given us are true to life and valuable. Employees, it’s your turn now. Please interview applicants.

T. Now I think it’s time for advertising managers. Please show your advertisements about these professions.

T. Journalist. Now let’s listen to the applicants’ opinion. Are they going to choose the professions they’ve been told about?

I like the profession of a guide. They meet many people. I think that the work of a guide is very much like that of a historian. The historian studies and tries to explain events of the past and the guide do the same about the present.

I want to become a guide because of some reasons. It is an interesting profession because a guide meets people from different countries and cultures all the time and has an opportunity to learn much about them. Besides, this profession is very useful for it helps people to understand each other.

I want to be a businesswoman. My father is working for an international company as a managing director. I have been several times at his office. I like it very much to be there. It seems to me that you need to have creativity to be a businessman. I respect my father and I want to become a businesswoman too. I think our country needs good business people to strengthen its economy.

After finishing school I'm going to enter the university and study marketing or management. Manager deals mainly with people. It is necessary to know English to deal with foreign market research and commercial activity in general. I still have time to think and choose.

Future teacher of English. My favourite subject is English. I understand the importance of knowledge of a foreign language. It enables people from different countries to communicate with each other, to use all necessary information in Internet, English newspapers, magazines and books, to understand English songs and films. So I decided for myself to become a teacher of English. Of course, I know that it is not easy and takes much patience and effort. And of course a teacher ought to have perfect knowledge of his subject. I realize that my dream can come true only if I work hard.

III.

T. Journalist. Our role-play comes to the end. It seems to me that we answered the question about the importance of English to every educated person.

I hope my report to the school radio news programme will be successful.

Do you like the game? I think it was good because you were cooperative and work well together in groups. As Henry Ford once said:

Coming together is a beginning,

Keeping together is a progress,

Working together is a success.
