Christmas around the world

Christmas in this country is quite different. Instead of white, snowy scenery, people there see blue skies and sunshine. They go the beach, sit in a tent in the bush.  Most people eat cold meats and salads, seafood and tropical fruit like mangoes and pawpaws, rockmelons, watermelons and stone fruits like plums, apricots, cherries and peaches. Children don’t go to school because they have summer vacations. Some cities have competitions for the best decorated house and street. The way people of this country celebrate Christmas varies not only from state to state but from household to household. Stores begin decorating for Christmas at the end of October. People decorate Christmas trees and hung stockings for Santa Claus. Some people have a little electric candle in each window and that looks pretty too. They also hung wreaths on the doors and sometimes people put wreaths on the grills in front of their cars. In one state where they don't have big trees, they decorate the cactus and the palm trees. At Christmas every home displays a crèche (a nativity scene). Children in this country put their sabots (shoes) in front of the fireplace where they hope Pere Noel (Father Christmas) will fill them with presents. They put flowers around their houses and inside their houses too. In this country people believe that St Nicholas (Santa Claus) wears drenched clothing and brine in his beard. His face is covered with perspiration because he helped sinking ships on the angry sea. In this country people say "Eftihismena Christouge" for Merry Christmas. Christmas there goes for twelve days After 40 days of fasting, adults and children look the Christmas feast forward to. On every table they have loaves of bread or Christopsomo (Christ bread). Christians in this country decorate mango or banana trees at Christmas time. Sometimes they also decorate their houses with mango leaves. They decorate churches with poinsettias.   In this country people call the main Christmas las posadas. They show how Joseph and Mary searched for a place to stay in Bethlehem. The processions begin nine days before Christmas because the original journey from Nazareth to Bethlehem took nine days. Friends and family members divide themselves into two groups - pilgrims and innkeepers. The pilgrims travel from house to house asking for a shelter until they finally reach the house with an alter and Nativity scene. There the party begins. Food and drink are served and then children take turns trying to break the piñata. In this country people like to decorate their houses at Christmas. Many houses have little frames holding electric candles in their windows. It looks really beautiful from the outside at night. They also have an “Adventskranz” – a wreath of leaves with four candles. Father Christmas – “Der Weihnachtsmann” – brings presents in the late afternoon of Christmas Eve (December 24th).
