После проведения первоначальных замеров потенциала крайних акупунктурных точек данного меридиана устройство AMI подает стимулирующие электроимпульсы в три вольта постоянного напряжения последовательно на каждую из акупунктурных точек, подключенных к цепям электронного наблюдения. По завершении электрического стимулирования устройство AMI считывает второй набор показаний для каждой акупунктурной точки данного меридиана, известных как "АР" или "after polarization" ("после-поляризационные"). Величины АР отражают временное или обостренное состояние меридианов. Разница между двумя записанными значениями (ВР-АР) известна как величина "Р" - "polarization" ("величина поляризации"). Значение Р указывает на величину сопротивления внешней среде, которую способно оказывать тело. Мотояма открыл, что устройства, подобные измерителям GSR (Galvanic Skin Resistance meters, измерители величины гальванического сопротивления кожи), замеряют лишь величины АР, которые могут изменяться под влиянием температуры, так же как и при усиленной умственной работе или при физическом напряжении обследуемого лица. Значения величин ВР и Р, как было выяснено, остаются относительно неизменными, что позволяет получить более достоверную информацию о состоянии организма в целом. Устройство AMI проводит замеры всех трех этих величин (ВР, Р и АР), и в течение нескольких минут компьютер распечатывает на бумаге полученную им электронную информацию о состоянии данного человека.
