BEING ENCOURAGED
Discouragement (depression) is a real thing.
But every once in a while you need to stop and say something that would encourage somebody.
It may not all be right, right now. Sin is sin and will always be sin, but some folks at times simply need a word of encouragement.
Heb. 10:25 exhort, encourage
Backround
David comes to Ziklag. It was all gone. It couldn’t have known if all were killed.
David and his men were the best of warriors, were flat on their faces CRYING.
Despite the fact that David was very sore distressed and discouraged, yet he ENCOURAGED HIMSELF.
i. NOT at the ball game.
ii. NOT in self-pleasures.
iii. NOT watching the latest soap opera, or the NEWS, or some television program.
But IN THE LORD.
I. YOU’RE TO PUT ASIDE THE PEOPLE’S OPINIONS (v. 6)
1. Do not ask other people about your condition of discouragement.
i. Especially if they are not saved.
ii. If they are not in the Book.
ILL. Bad opinions are like arm pits.
ILL. If you have a problem with your foot, you don’t go to a dentist.
iii. That does not eliminate getting sound counsel from somebody when in need.
Prov.
Prov.
i. When people are in trouble they’re looking for someone to blame.
ILL. After Adam fell he blames the Lord for the wife He gave to him.
Eve blamed the devil.
2. David had a relationship with the Lord that the other people simply did not understand.
i. David was already in close with the Lord. A lot of folks aren’t.
3. Bad events can be a good thing in disguise.
In chapter 29 the Philistines refused to accept David as an ally against Saul.
In 29:11 David was to return from fighting.
But when they came back to Ziklag it was taken, wives and all.
That was God’s PROVIDENCE to keep him from fighting.
Because if he had gone with the Philistines and won the battle against Saul, he never would have become king of Israel.
He would have had to stay with the Philistines, and Ishbosheth would have been king (2 Sam. 2:8).
Some “bad” thing might happen in your life but in actuality it is a good thing.
That is why it is good to be encouraged.
II. SEEK THE LORD’S ADVISE (v. 7).
1. Although Daved was “greatly distressed he sought the Lord.
2. He would not allow the social problems (pressure) hinder him from getting a hold of God (v. 6)
3. He would not be manipulated by their grief (v. 6)
4. David would accept what THE LORD would say (v. 6).
5. He’d ask counsel of the Lord –
6. He got His answer. (v. 8)
THAT IS INCOURAGEMENT.
THAT IS ENCOURAGEMENT!
i. What God has done in the past.
- He got you hear like He’s done before.
- He’s answered prayer before, He can do it again.
ii. Looking on the ‘bright’ side
– He’s gotten me through passed problems He can get me through this one.
- Rom. 8:28 is still in the Book. David didn’t know at first, if all were dead or not.
ii. Write down blessings, answers to prayer.
ILL. They FORGOT…!
III. SEE AND BELIEVE THE PROMISES OF GOD
1. It shouldn’t make any difference if others will go with you.
The river was about 32 kilometers south of Ziklag. People got tired, worn out.
But David pursued. He ‘wanted’ it.
III. SIMPLY OBEYED THE LORD (v. 9)
i. He revenged all disobedience with obedience.
IV. TRUST GOD’S PROVIDENCE
vss. 11, 16
1. David had the promise but the question is HOW was it to be done?
Where were those Amalekites?
Who will guide them to their rendezvous?
i. God would use a weak, sick youth. He just happened to get sick.
The means are in His hand as well as the end. (1 Cor. 1:27, 28)
ii. David was not ashamed to pick up the world’s sick and half-dead castaways, to nourish themin to life and health. We were in that condition at one time too. Don’t forget about that.
V. BLESS GOD BY GIVING WHAT GOD HAS GIVEN
Vss. 16-18
1. He smote them (v. 17)
2. He allowed only 400 young men to escape (v. 17). That is mercy!
3. David recovered all. A fulfillment of God’s word!
4. David did not let the ‘Pharisees’ hinder him from being a blessing (vss. 21-24)
The 3 blessings (v. 23) -
1. The Lord has given us the spoil.
2. He has preserved us from death in war.
3. He has delivered the company of Amalekites into our hands.
Conclusion
Invitation
1. To carry on, even if you are tired (Gal. 6:9)
2. It’s worth it to stop and just look at what God has done in your life.
3. It could be a lot worse.
4. Rom. 8:28 is STILL in the Book.
Be encouraged IN THE LORD
Sinner – you can be encouraged only so much. It’s not good enough.
“In the Lord” means you have to get saved.
