1 слайд. Пролог

Teacher: Would you like to make the journey to the British Isles and get to learn their landmarks?

Student1: Yes, of course.

Student 2: Sure.

T: What does it mean “landmarks”? Do you know any landmarks of the world?

Look at this sign. What does it mean?

Student 3: UNESCO. (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation)

T: You are quite right. UNESCO protects the sites that belong to the World Cultural and Architectural Heritage.

T: Look at these landmarks and name the country or the city where it is from.

T: You know the landmarks of the world very well. Do you know any landmarks of the British Isles?

S1: I think it’s Big Ben.

S2: It’s Tower Bridge.

S3: Maybe it’s Westminster Abbey.

T: You are partly right. But these landmarks are mostly in the UK. Let’s go to the journey and learn more new landmarks of the British Isles.

T: Where are the British Isles located? How islands are there?

S1: They are in the north-west of Europe.

S2: There are two big and a lot of small islands.

T: What countries are situated on the British Isles?

S3: Ireland and the United Kingdom.

T: What do you know about these countries?

S4: Ireland is in the south-west of the British Isles. Dublin is the capital of Ireland. The Irish flag is green-white-orange.

S5: England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland are parts of the United Kingdom. London is the capital of England. The flag of England is white with the red cross.

S6: Cardiff is the capital of Wales. There are two stripes – white and green with the red dragon on the Welsh flag.

S7: Edinburgh is the capital of Scotland. The Scottish flag is blue with white cross.

S8: Belfast is the capital of Northern Ireland.

T: Look at our journey route. These medieval castles are the landmarks of the British Isles. They are protected by UNESCO. Please, match the interesting places and activities in the castles during our virtual journey.

T: Our first visit is to Malahide Castle. It is in the north-east of Dublin, Ireland.

Malahide Castle dates back to the 12th century. It was used as a fortress many years ago. It was also the home of Talbot family for more than 800 years. The circular towers of the castle are classical and very attractive. Malahide Castle is a popular tourist place of Ireland nowadays. You can enter the castle through this entrance gate with the lions. Inside the castle you can see the old furniture in the sitting room. There are old paintings in the Great Hall. You can find the silhouettes’ collection in the library and the old toys in the children’s room. Malahide Castle is surrounded by the garden and the park. Look at the peacock and beautiful flowers in the garden. The roses decorate the castle’s walls. The park is attractive for walking and picnics. There is a nice children’s playground for soccer, rugby and cricket near the castle. People say that Malahide Castle is a spooky place because they often see ghosts here.

T: Look at the Conwy Castle. It’s in north of Wales, near the Snowdonian mountains.

Conwy Castle is in Gwynedd, Wales. It is a classical 13th century fortress. It took seven years to build the castle. The towers of Conwy Castle are 15 meters tall. There are 21 towers – 8 big and 15 small. The towers offer great views of the Snowdonian mountains and the nearby river. The old bridge is protected well, but you can go to the castle across the entrance bridge. Conwy Castle is a masterpiece of medieval architecture.

Edinburgh Castle was built on top of an extinct volcano. It dates to the 11th century. It’s the most famous castle in Scotland. The view of Edinburgh. Edinburgh Castle Esplanade. It’s very popular with tourist. The entrance gateway (with the statues of the kings). In the yard. Great Hall with collections of armories, swords, guns. In the dungeon. The cannon on the wall. The One o’clock Gun (Admiral Nelson started this tradition in 1802 that means the Edinburgh harbor is free.). The One o’clock Gun is fired every day. The Castle Garden is very beautiful. There is a fountain. Edinburgh Castle is famous for the annual Military Tattoo. The bands form different countries come to this festival (the band from Norway, Scotland). You should visit this unique castle!

T: We continue our virtual journey. Now we are in London, England.

The Tower of London dates back to the 11th century and sits on the banks of the River Thames. There are about 20 towers in the castle. White Tower is the oldest part of this fortress. It was long time the tallest building in London. There is the Queen’s House with the Throne Room there. You can see the Crown Jewel and the Royal Armories in the Jewels House. The Tower is guarded by Yeomen Warders or ‘Beefeaters’. They have two different uniforms. Eight big black ravens live in the Tower. There’s a legend that says if they ever fly away, the Tower will fall down.
