A feature film usually lasts for between 90 and 210 minutes. The term comes from the days when people who went to the cinema would watch a series of short films, such as news items, cartoons and documentaries, before the main film. The short films led up to what was known as the ‘featured presentation'. The Academy Awards, more commonly known as the Oscars, is the most famous film awards ceremony in the world, and is watched by mil lions of people every year. The awards are given to people who have achieved excellence in many aspects of film making, such as acting, direct ing and screenwriting. Winning an Oscar is a sign that you have made it in the film business. Actors and actresses who appeared in early silent films did not have their names publicized as they are today, and they were certainly not treated as stars. However, as the public became more interested in the performers who they saw on the big screen, movie producers began publicizing the names of their leading actors and actresses, and movie stars were born. Steven Allan Spielberg has been named as the most powerful and influential figure in the motion picture industry, and has won three Academy Awards. He has been directing movies for almost four decades, and has made many suc cessful films. Some of his most impressive work has dealt with difficult issues, such as slavery, war, and terrorism. Gone With the Wind has sold more tickets than any other film in history since its release in 1939 and is still the most watched movie of all-time in the UK. The Sound of Music was the first film to make more money than Gone With the Wind, but the film which is considered to be the father of the blockbuster movie was Jaws, which made over $100,000,000 in ticket sales when it was released in the end of the 1920s, each of the five major studios in Hollywood employed thousands of actors, screenwriters, direc tors, musicians, camera operators, editors, and set and costume designers. Thousands of people travelled to Los Angeles to seek fame and fortune in the film industry. Most wanted to appear on the big screen and see their name in lights. Edison's Vitascope Theater opened to the public on Monday, 19th October 1896. It was in a basement in Main Street, Buffalo, and was one of the first permanent motion-picture exhibitions. There was enough seating space for about 90 people and tickets cost three cents. The films which flickered on the screen were usually of travel scenes.
